Li Miaomiao has no knowledge of the electronics supply chain. She needs to learn on the job. Her strength is that she will ask clearly if she doesn't understand something, instead of pretending to know what she doesn't.
The person in charge of the rice supply chain replied, "Because it's unnecessary."
"Similar to mobile phones, VR products are best iterated on a yearly basis. We don't need to use the best components. The quality of the product should be such that users can use it for five to ten years."
"We only need to ensure that it can be used normally within the warranty period. Using too many high-quality parts is actually not conducive to the company's profit."
"By controlling the quality of components and making a profit through cost control, and by generating profit when users replace their devices, the company can maximize its profits."
The Mi 6, which was produced by DaMi back then, was so good that many users are still using it today.
Li Miaomiao finally understood: "What about the iPhone?"
The other party replied, "The logic of iPhone is different from that of other brands. It is more like an electronic luxury item in a certain sense. Users who are supposed to upgrade their phones every year will not refrain from upgrading just because their iPhone from last year is still usable."
"The iPhone also holds its value best in the second-hand market, which means it can fetch a high price. There is a group of regular users who upgrade their phones every year, which provides a guarantee for the iPhone, so it can use the best components."
(To add to what was said earlier about the author being a Xiaomi fan, I've only ever used one Xiaomi phone and the experience was very poor. I've used iPhones since graduating from university, and during university I mostly used Meizu phones. I can't really call myself a die-hard Xiaomi fan...)
I recently bought a rice ultrasonic glasses cleaner, and it broke down in less than two months...
Li Miaomiao: "Okay, I understand."
The head of the supply chain added, "If we can ensure that brain-computer interface technology iterates with new features every year, then I think we can follow Apple's path by using the best components."
"We can force users to upgrade their devices through technological updates, rather than forcing them to upgrade by making the user experience of older devices worse."
Back in September, the research team at the Lion City R&D Center, led by Zheng Li, conducted targeted optimizations of brain-computer interface technology.
Kechuang Biotechnology's first MSC chip specifically designed for brain-computer interface VR has also been designed.
The prototype of the brain-computer interface VR has been finalized. Li Miaomiao asked her subordinates to send her the product report and test experience of the prototype, and to give a brief report on it.
"On the technical level, the system that Tencent is developing for brain-computer interface VR is still in testing. The joint technical team of Tencent and Dami said that the VR system still needs time to complete development."
Operating systems are no ordinary problem; Xiaomi and Tencent mobilized over 5,000 technical personnel to form a dedicated development team.
Tencent internally views this as the most important task of the past five years, which will support the company's development for the next ten years.
However, due to the need to connect remotely with the R&D team in Singapore, and the need to clarify the requirements for brain-computer interface VR, only a rough prototype was available by September.
This progress is already faster than expected.
Huawei's HarmonyOS, whether you call it a shell of Android or a fake self-developed system, took over four thousand engineers approximately two years from project initiation to deployment.
Facebook has been talking about developing a dedicated VR operating system since 2017, but there's still no sign of it in 2022. They've just been making a lot of noise about it, and they've even changed the company name to META.
"However, the VR system call layer has been developed. We can provide the call interface and usage instructions for brain-computer connection to game developers, who can now begin simultaneous development."
"However, the negotiations have been stalled for a long time, and the major game companies cannot accept the 50/50 profit split."
Apple's tax is 30%, and this fee is charged for all transactions through Apple's apps, except for money transfers and purchases.
Android systems don't have this fee, but if you want to list your app on the app stores of major mobile phone manufacturers, you still need to pay a fee, which is called a channel fee.
Kechuang Future has worked hard to create a brain-computer interface system, and naturally hopes to collect taxes like Apple, essentially like a landlord collecting rent, with game developers being the tenants.
Li Miaomiao said, "Let's talk as soon as possible, and we can adjust the ratio appropriately."
The subordinate replied, "In negotiations with game developers, they can only accept a maximum commission of 20%, and NetEase has stated that Tencent's games will also need to pay the same percentage of commission if they are to be featured on Kechuang Future's VR platform."
The patent rights and software copyrights for the VR operating system belong to Kechuang Future, but the rights to Tencent's software applications, whether it's WeChat, QQ, or VR games, belong to Tencent.
Li Miaomiao said, "Tencent will definitely need to pay a commission, which I think is acceptable, but 20% is too far from our expectations. Let's discuss it slowly."
"We can show it to Tencent when we negotiate after they've made a demo sample. There are always manufacturers who will make concessions to be the first to try something new."
This is a game of strategy: VR manufacturers need software to enrich their ecosystem, while software manufacturers also need to access hardware devices to gain users and generate revenue.
The biggest advantage of developing your own operating system is that you can reap the benefits in the future. As long as the ecosystem is well-built and there are enough users, the current investment will be returned in hundreds or thousands.
Otherwise, given Tencent's nature, how could they possibly invest in developing an operating system? VR operating systems are a blue ocean, while mobile and PC operating systems are a red ocean.
