Chapter 217 Autonomous Driving Technology

The state-owned enterprise shares in the biotechnology sector have exceeded 20%.

Even though Tesla has a Gigafactory in Shanghai, it still cannot obtain China's most advanced lithium batteries.

Tesla executives have traveled to Shanghai several times to negotiate on this matter. The official Chinese stance is that these are commercial transactions and they cannot interfere.

“If we don’t put autonomous driving technology into use first, this market will be one where one company gradually approaches a monopoly, and other manufacturers will have virtually no chance.”

"What we need to do now is to become one of the players in this field first, and then consider building the entire industry chain later."

"There must be many Chinese joint venture car companies that would be willing to cooperate with us."

After Baglino finished speaking, he paused and looked at Jerome, who seemed a little awkward in front of him.

Jerome is Tesla's operations director and is also a long-time employee, having worked at Tesla for fifteen years.

Jerome replied, "Yes, Shenhai General Machinery of China has indicated that it is willing to cooperate with us."

"Although GM and Honda previously joined forces to launch electric vehicles priced as low as 30,000 US dollars in an attempt to compete with us globally."

“But Shenhai General Motors doesn’t have much say, and they are very interested in our proposal.”

"Moreover, the Shanghai government is also interested in facilitating cooperation."

“We can partner with Shenhai General Motors to develop autonomous electric vehicles, with us responsible for the autonomous driving module.”

"But if we are determined to cooperate with Shenhai General, we need to speed up the process."

"I think it's worth paying a certain price."

"Because although the Shanghai government will definitely favor us, Google and Microsoft both want to cooperate with Chinese automakers, using Chinese electric trucks as a platform to integrate their own autonomous driving technology."

Google's inability to enter the Chinese market does not mean that Google has no business in China.

Google has a very extensive business presence in China.

Google opened an artificial intelligence research and development center in China in 2017, with the main research goals being natural language processing and advertising optimization.

Meanwhile, a Chinese team is responsible for the development of Google's open-source library, TensorFlow.

Google has a small portion of its Pixel phone supply chain located in China. Google's advertising business is also based in China, specifically targeting Chinese companies looking to expand into overseas markets.

Microsoft goes without saying; Microsoft Research Asia has always been located in China.

China's autonomous electric trucks were first deployed in the Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta regions.

Google and Microsoft noticed it immediately and felt that it was very promising, so they started preliminary market research and development back at headquarters.

Microsoft and Google only started taking action after electric trucks were sold in overseas markets.

Shenhai General is the most likely Chinese automaker to reach a cooperation agreement.

Having never manufactured trucks before doesn't matter; electric trucks are very different from regular trucks, and other automakers also lacked experience in this area.

Baglino sensed trouble; neither Google nor Microsoft were easy opponents.

If neither of these two companies were to enter the market, Baglino is confident that it can reach a cooperation agreement that is favorable to them.

The confidence stems from the partnership with Tesla, which will enable China's autonomous electric trucks to be sold to more European and American countries, not just France.

With Tesla lobbying in the middle, America shouldn't be a problem at least.

But what Tesla can do, Microsoft and Google can only do better; these two lobbying groups in Washington are far more powerful than Tesla.

"You go and prepare the materials. I will personally make a trip to China."

Currently, it's not just American giants who want to leverage Chinese automakers as a springboard to integrate autonomous driving technology into Chinese electric trucks.

Although none of the automakers have experience in manufacturing electric trucks, truck experience is just as important.

American giants aren't unwilling to hire Chinese truck manufacturers with experience, such as FAW.

But the problem is that someone beat them to it and established a joint venture subsidiary with Jiefang.

Many small startups are more motivated and execute their plans more quickly.

For example, Plusai, an autonomous driving company in China, is backed by Sequoia Capital China, China Renaissance Capital, and GSR Ventures.

The company began extensive testing of its autonomous trucks in America as early as 2016.

Trials were conducted in Europe and China in 2019. In China, it successfully completed over 100,000 kilometers of trial runs on two long-haul routes without any incidents.

Following breakthroughs in new energy technologies and autonomous driving technologies, plusai and the capital behind it are eager to capitalize on the opportunity.

These trees have been planted for quite some time now; it's time for them to harvest them.

The joint venture between Plusai and FAW has begun mass production of autonomous electric trucks. If they accept JD.com's investment, JD.com's self-operated logistics will heavily utilize their electric trucks.

Technological advancements have brought about changes to society in many ways.

A technological breakthrough brings not only a breakthrough in that specific field, but also a breakthrough in the entire industry chain.

It is precisely because technological breakthroughs can have a ripple effect that America is wary of Huawei's 5G technology.

As for why America doesn't interfere with Kechuang Bio but heavily interferes with Huawei, it's because Huawei has alternative products, while Kechuang Bio doesn't.

When others accuse you of monopolizing, you'd better actually do it.

......

"We can consider Merlin's Hyber test as a more advanced version of the complete Turing test."

Here, "advanced" simply means higher difficulty or higher requirements.
