"What is that?"
Xiao Si crouched down and went under the bed. She saw a tiny child huddled in the corner. Before Xiao Si could tell him to come out, Si Si climbed in and pulled him out.
"......"
"Don't kill me, don't kill me."
The child lay on the ground, trembling and shouting.
Long'er poked him with her sword. "Who are you? What are you doing here?"
“We’re occupying someone’s room.” Sisi pushed her sword away. “Don’t always threaten people with your sword. He’s still a baby.”
Long'er was speechless for a moment.
Xiao Si squatted down and asked, "Don't be afraid, is this your room? We're just staying here for a while, we mean no harm."
"Yes, don't be afraid, we are good people."
Sisi patted his head like an adult.
The child raised his head, his long hair obscuring his face. Sisi could vaguely see his eyes, which were dark and looked like two holes.
"You really won't kill me?"
"right."
The child lowered his head and pondered for a while. Suddenly, the sound of the wind outside stopped, and he trembled violently. He put his fingertips to his lips and made a shushing gesture.
The three were puzzled.
Soon, a chill ran down my spine.
Suddenly, a tap-tap-tap sound rang out on the quiet street.
It sounded like a stick hitting the ground.
Sisi quietly approached Xiaosi and grabbed the hem of his clothes. He then drew his sword and shielded her behind him. The child, seeing this, also hid behind him.
Long'er was standing closest to the window. She was trembling, feeling the tapping sound getting closer and closer, but her feet seemed to be rooted to the ground, and she couldn't move an inch.
She looked to Xiao Si for help, "Junior brother..."
Xiao Si's eyes turned cold, signaling her to be quiet, when suddenly a scream for help came from next door, followed by a series of bangs and smashing.
"Save her!" Sisi tried to get up, but the child suddenly hugged her. "Don't go to save her, there are bad people. Just wait a bit, she'll kill that person and everything will be fine."
There was no sound from next door.
Before long, it got light.
Everything returned to how it was when we first came in.
"What exactly happened?" Long'er broke out in a cold sweat, angrily questioning the child.
The child shrank back. "There's a ghost. There's a big ghost in our city."
“Don’t be afraid, we are from the Heavenly Realm. Just tell us what’s going on, and we’ll help you catch the ghosts,” the little priest said.
Sisi nodded. "Yes, don't be afraid."
The child looked them over for a while before saying, "I don't know what's going on. Ever since the city lord's wife died, strange things have started happening. All the food in the city has turned into stone, and it gets dark very quickly. As soon as it gets dark, a big ghost comes out to grab people. She only kills one person and then leaves."
Just then, someone outside started crying.
Xiao Si pushed open the door. A group of people were gathered at the door next door, and one of the women was crying the loudest, "Da Hu, Da Hu, wake up!"
The onlookers expressed their regret.
"This is the seventh one this month, and it's always a man. Does that ghost hate men that much?"
"It's pitiful, they're all young men."
"Didn't the city lord say he found a ghost hunter? Why didn't it work?"
"What ghost hunters? They're all just scammers."
Xiao Si closed the door. "If the ghost only kills men, then it's very likely a woman who hates men, so she kills them."
"Thank goodness." Long'er breathed a sigh of relief.
Xiao Si glanced at her, then pulled Si Si up and said, "Since the strange things started after the City Lord's wife died, let's go visit the City Lord's Mansion."
Sisi nodded her little head. "Could it be the spirit of the city lord's wife causing trouble?"
Long'er rolled her eyes. "If it were her, why didn't she kill the city lord? Instead, she went to the trouble of killing other men. Shouldn't she have killed the city lord first if she hated the male lead?"
"You'll find out when you go and see for yourself."
Sisi waved goodbye to the child.
The three arrived at the city lord's mansion. Red lanterns were hung all over the trees and gates inside the mansion, and several maids carrying melons and fruits were talking in the corridor.
"I wonder how good this ghost hunter is. I heard he came from the sky. I just hope he's useful, otherwise there won't be any men left in our city."
"I have a bad feeling about it. We've already brought over a dozen ghost hunters to our manor, but it's been completely useless. The lady's resentment is just too great."
When the lady was mentioned, the two maids immediately shut their mouths, and only continued speaking after looking around to make sure no one was watching.
Do you know how our lady died?
"I know, wasn't he stoned to death by Aunt Guan's men? It was terrible. Aunt Guan is a ruthless character. Now she's all lovey-dovey with the master every day."
"I heard from the old folks that if you can't fight them in life, you can't fight them in death either. The lady must have been unable to get revenge, so she turned her attention to the other men in the city."
"The lady is also a pitiful person."
Their footsteps faded into the distance.
"How pitiful, it must be the spirit of that lady causing trouble." Sisi sighed softly. "We just need to find that lady."
Long'er scoffed, "What's there to pity? She's incompetent. If it were me, I would have killed that concubine with a single sword stroke and been done with it."
"You're a fairy, but she isn't."
Sisi pouted, "If you're so capable, then don't use your magic to cut her down."
Long'er choked, "I'm not going, he's not my husband."
"Tch~"
Xiao Si felt something was wrong. He could see clearly from outside the city that the swirling dark clouds were demonic energy, not ghostly energy.
