Chapter 370 Difficulty

Xu Gong had already made up his mind that if Wu Tong made outstanding contributions in this area, he would immediately submit a report and become Wu Tong's assistant and help her.

Completing their aircraft carrier dream is the most important core element. Everything else can be ignored for this group of purely patriotic scientific researchers!

Wu Tong flipped through the gas turbine information in her hand. The design concept was so different from that of aircraft engines that she couldn't help but feel ashamed of her previous thoughts.

Accepting Li Huaimin's request, Wu Tong, while preparing for the academic conference in Beijing, also did a lot of research and study to fully prepare. She studied "Principles of Naval Ships," "Principles of Naval Power Plants," "New Technologies in Surface Ship Design," and so on. She studied almost every available material on naval vessels, laying a solid foundation.

When she really started studying this field, Wu Tong felt that she had been a little too confident when she first agreed.

The naval vessel sector is completely different from the aerospace sector that Wu Tong has been deeply involved in for the past two years. Just looking at her focus, the large diesel engine used by the Ningliao aircraft carrier is fundamentally different from an aircraft engine!

She was now very familiar with aviation. As soon as she saw the wings, her mind would jump out and generate a series of design and development concepts for wing surface vortexes. As soon as she saw the belly, she would immediately start thinking about the lifting body layout and aerodynamic layout, and how to make it more perfect. Then, when she saw the fully movable horizontal tail, Wu Tong could almost spontaneously start to deduce the control and fly-by-wire system...

Wu Tong can immediately give results and deductions for some simple data and designs without thinking, and this has almost become a habitual instinct. In her consciousness, she has fully mastered the logical chain of knowledge belonging to aerospace. This is Wu Tong's biggest gain in the past two years.

However, when it comes to the ship section, she is still only at the superficial theoretical level. She just remembers those theories, but there is still some distance to go before she can truly connect them to practical applications!

When her research on aircraft carriers can be as easy as on aircraft engines, it will be considered a true success!

Gas turbines are a vast technological field, and their complexity is no less than that of the aviation WS engines of the time!

No matter how things change, the gas turbine remains essentially the same. It is an internal combustion power machine that uses a continuous flow of gas as a working fluid to drive the impeller to rotate at high speed, converting the energy of the fuel into useful work. It is a rotating impeller heat engine.

In the main flow of air and gas in a gas turbine, the gas turbine cycle consists of only three major components: the compressor, the combustion chamber, and the gas turbine. This is commonly known as a simple cycle, and most gas turbines adopt a simple cycle scheme.

As Wu Tong flipped through the gas turbine literature, the theoretical knowledge surrounding it began to stir in her mind. She was even able to multitask, scanning the material with her hands and eyes while also consulting with XCMG about the development and current status of domestic gas turbines.

"In the past, during those years, we had a hard time!

In the 1980s, relations between China and the mainland improved and recovered, entering a brief ten-year honeymoon period, and China began to cooperate with China in the fields of military, economy, science and technology, and trade.

Especially in the field of military cooperation, the United States lifted its nearly 30-year arms embargo on China and opened the door to arms exports to China.

At the time, China was extremely eager for advanced weaponry and equipment, desperately seeking them from Western countries to overcome the backwardness of its defense industry. It was at that time that we imported the LM2500 gas turbine, which was intended for use on the Type 052 guided-missile destroyers, the "Ice City" (Hull 112) and the "Green Island" (Hull 113), and simultaneously conducted simulations.

Xu Gong knew all of this development history like the back of his hand. He introduced it to Wu Tong one by one and he sighed deeply.

"However, our attempt at imitation ultimately failed. Although we excel at reverse engineering, we lacked access to intermediate test data, a solid foundation, and no reliable principles to rely on. We also couldn't resolve the material issue. With nothing but pure enthusiasm, it was incredibly difficult to replicate the highly sophisticated LM2500. We were ridiculed and called our dreams a pipe dream, which was understandable!"

"No matter what, Mr. Xu, you predecessors had the courage to try at that time. We, the younger generations, should worship and admire you!" Wu Tong gave a thumbs up and praised.

Without the stubborn trial and error of these predecessors, how could China's two bombs and one satellite, as well as many other scientific research results, be gradually established and born? Without these powerful deterrents, how could we have the peace and prosperity we have today!

The peace they enjoy today is maintained by these ancestors who fought bloody battles and carried heavy burdens forward!

"Hehe... I don't need a young kid like you to comfort me. Failure is the mother of success. Failure in scientific research is commonplace. We are used to it!" Xu Gong laughed, but was still moved by Wu Tong's recognition. The young kids today did not look down on their efforts back then, but admired them instead!

How wonderful, Lao Li, Lao Qian, did you see this? I saw it for you! Our great China has produced a remarkable child. Now, she's taking over your baton and participating in the research and development of gas turbines. She's been called a miracle. Maybe she'll even launch a large satellite for you. When that happens, Lao Xu will toast to you!

Wiping his face, Xu Gong pretended to be calm and continued, "In those years, importing was the mainstream. Later, we had a new goal. Ukraine inherited the Soviet Union's wealth, and we facilitated and successfully imported the UGT gas turbine from Ukraine. It was the most technologically advanced gas turbine developed by the Soviet Union. At that time, we urgently wanted to change the situation where there were no gas turbines in our country!

In 1993, we successfully signed the "UGT-Gas Turbine Production License and Single Unit Sales Contract" with Ukraine, and they provided 10 UGT-gas turbines and transferred related technologies for domestic production!

"After the successful introduction, it took another ten years, until 2004, for us to truly digest a lot of the technology and complete the imitation. Although it was just the starting point, the power of the copied machine at the time was only a pitiful 28 megawatts! But we had the foundation of the gas turbine!

It wasn't until last year, in 2011, that our state-owned gas turbines were truly fully domestically produced and were first used on the second batch of Type 052C destroyers. After full domestic production, they were named QC-280 gas turbines and are expected to be fully used on Type 052D missile destroyers.
