Chapter 67: Joining the Company (Part 2)
Next, Xu Anmin took Zhang Ruifeng and Xie Yun to see the staff dormitory.
The dormitories are located behind the grain depot's work area, consisting of two rows of red brick houses.
Zhang Ruifeng was assigned a room. It wasn't very big, about ten square meters. It contained a single bed, a table, a chair, and nothing else. She had to configure it herself.
Next to hers are Wang Shuzhen and Chen Lihong's rooms.
Xu Anmin said: "Comrades Wang Shuzhen and Chen Lihong don't usually live here. They only stay here when the weather is bad, such as when it's windy or rainy."
Zhang Ruifeng smiled and said, "I'm the same as them. I have children at home, and I don't feel comfortable leaving them alone."
Xu Anmin nodded and said with a smile, "When our staff benefits are improved, it would be great if everyone could have their own independent courtyard and live with their families. Then we wouldn't have to run around so much."
These grown men usually lived in the dormitories, but the women, more family-oriented than them, chose not to live there, preferring to endure the hardship of commuting every day. Comrade Zhang's home was the farthest away, and even at a brisk pace it took almost an hour to walk. She had to work the hardest.
And he just said that. How could they live in the commune with their whole families? They didn't work? They didn't earn work points? What would they eat and drink? Their family members didn't have jobs.
Zhang Ruifeng smiled and said, "I'm looking forward to that day, too."
She wasn't afraid of walking, and at this stage, living in the village was more suitable. She could rent a house in the commune and move in with her children, but that would make it inconvenient for Binbin to go to work. Besides, if she moved in, how would she raise pigs? How would she feed the chickens? How would she cultivate her private plot? How would she make money?
Although I will be able to receive a monthly salary in the future, no one would complain about having too much money, right?
After getting familiar with the environment, Zhang Ruifeng and Xie Yun said goodbye to Xu Anmin, headed back directly, and went to the brigade headquarters.
Zhang Ruifeng also needs to transfer her household registration and grain and oil business, and needs a certificate from the team leader.
Zhang Guangzong was happy for them. "I really didn't expect that Binbin would encounter something like this when he applied for his diploma last time. Why didn't you tell me when you came back?"
Xie Yun laughed and said, "I didn't take it seriously at all. I didn't expect others to take it so seriously."
Zhao Fuguo smiled and said, "You are too honest. If you tell us, even if they don't reward you, we can still ask for a reward for you."
Xie Yun said, "How can it be like this? If I encounter this kind of thing again, I will come back and tell you."
Zhang Guangzong smiled and said, "You're still thinking about the future. This kind of thing is just a coincidence. It happens once in a while, but you can't expect it to happen every time. Just wait quietly to be your teacher! We need you in our junior high school!"
Xie Yun held his head high and puffed out his chest. "When you put it that way, I suddenly feel filled with a sense of mission."
The next day, Xie Yun accompanied Zhang Ruifeng to the commune again. Because the public security, procuratorate, and courts had been destroyed in 1967, the commune no longer had a police station. The functions of the police station had been dispersed among several commune departments. For example, protecting the lives and property of the people fell under the "People's Armed Forces Department," while household registration management fell under the commune's civil affairs officer.
The formalities were complete and things were done quickly.
On the way home, Zhang Ruifeng asked her, "Next time when you send something to Comrade Li's house, can I do it for you so you don't have to run away?"
Xie Yun smiled and said, "No! The fewer people involved, the safer it will be. I'll be the only one in contact with them, and you can just pretend you don't know them. This will be better for everyone. Besides, you work at the grain store, and you'll be familiar with everyone in the commune over time. It's inconvenient for you to deliver things to them, and it would be bad if someone saw you. I'll go instead. I'm always careful and have never been seen by anyone.
"Also, I've dealt with them a few times. Actually, I only met Old Man Li at the purchasing station, and I met his wife when I went to his house. I haven't met anyone else in their family. They're pretty cautious."
Zhang Ruifeng thought about it and felt that it made sense. "Then you should go."
On the third day, December 20, Zhang Ruifeng officially started work.
Working hours are from 8am to 12pm and from 2pm to 5:30pm.
Zhang Ruifeng had breakfast at home and brought lunch in Xie Yun's school lunch box, which consisted of two flatbreads and a spoonful of stir-fried cabbage. There was a stove at the grain depot, so she put the lunch box in the steamer to heat it up before eating.
She only brought the simplest meals, just enough to fill her stomach, and she would eat the delicious food secretly at home behind closed doors.
She had asked Xu Anmin the day before yesterday, and the two female comrades at the grain store all ate this way. The male comrades would go out and turn left to eat with the cadres in the commune compound. There was a master chef who was in charge of cooking. I heard he was very skilled, and he paid a certain amount of food allowance every month.
Zhang Ruifeng didn't ask about the specific amount, but since Wang Shuzhen and Chen Lihong refused to join, that meant one thing: it was definitely not as cost-effective as bringing your own food.
It was around 6:40 when she left the house. Xie Yun and Xie Shen followed her closely, escorting her out of the brigade and walking with her for a while. Zhang Ruifeng smiled and said, "You two, come with me to work."
The siblings chuckled, "Good luck on your first day at work, Mom!"
Zhang Ruifeng smiled and said, "With you two here, I'm sure everything will go smoothly. There won't be any problems at all."
"Then let's go back."
"Go back quickly."
Xie Shen ran away, he was almost late for school.
Xie Yun followed behind.
Both the siblings ran like the wind.
On the other side, Zhang Ruifeng also walked briskly. She considered it a daily exercise, walking back and forth.
Facts have proven that when a person is in good spirits, their body is also light. When she arrived at the office, the grain store was not open yet. On her first day at work, she didn't even have a key.
After waiting for a while, Wang Shuzhen and Chen Lihong arrived one after another.
Wang Shuzhen smiled and said, "You came so early!"
Zhang Ruifeng said: "There is no clock at home, so I can't tell the time. I just figured it was about time and came out. I didn't expect to be early."
Chen Lihong smiled and said, "I just told Sister Wang that Sister Zhang's house is far away, so it's okay to be a little late. We are both used to it, and we live close to each other. We will definitely arrive on time and won't delay the opening."
Wang Shuzhen smiled and said, "Yes, being a few minutes or ten minutes late is no big deal. Just don't be too late. Sundays are our busiest time here because everyone has to work on weekdays and often crowds in to buy food on Sundays. On weekdays, there are fewer people and it's not very busy. I'll give you a key later."
Zhang Ruifeng smiled and said, "I see. It's my first day at work, so I'm not very familiar with the job yet. I'll learn from you two and get to know you better as soon as possible."
Everyone was easy to talk to and we quickly became familiar with each other.
The first day of work went very smoothly.
