Chapter 88 The Death of Lei Bao

Chapter 88 The Death of Lei Bao

A man and a dog darted like ghosts into an office with a half-open door next to the stairwell, silently disappearing behind the shadow of an overturned filing cabinet. The fire, perfectly cooperative, curled up, its breathing becoming faint, the flames on its body completely concealed, only its dark red eyes darting warily in the darkness.

Almost the instant they were hidden, the tooth-grinding, mixed roars and footsteps poured down the stairwell like a flood, flooding into the second basement level!

Even without Ruan Ning and Da Huo as their most obvious targets, the presence of living beings and the energy remnants left from the previous battle still acted like a beacon in the darkness, attracting these deformed monsters who were left only with their berserk instincts.

Without the slightest hesitation, they swarmed towards the direction where the scent and traces were strongest—the central control room area where the Thunder Leopard Squad and the Venom Fang Squad were located!

Inside the central control room.

Lei Bao stared at the blurry surveillance footage. The screen, which had originally shown the entrance to the isolation zone on the lower level, now only showed swaying figures and occasional flashes of fire before the image went completely black—probably due to the impact of the battle or the monsters damaging the camera.

"Hmph, looks like we've stumbled into those monsters' lair." Captain Poison Fang grinned maliciously. "They're in for a rough time. Once they're mostly dead, we'll 'pick up the scraps' and lure the monsters towards them to make sure they're completely wiped out."

Lei Bao nodded grimly, pondering how to explain himself to Shen Yao after Ruan Ning's death, and how to ensure that the mutated dog would fall into his hands, perhaps as a bargaining chip to negotiate with the Shen family.

He was satisfied with his subordinates who had been arranged to create commotion on the basement level to attract zombies or monsters from other areas, and he felt that Ruan Ning and the others were in dire straits.

A member of the Thunder Leopard Squad, who was on guard duty in the passageway outside the control room, suddenly listened intently, his expression changing slightly: "Brother Leopard, it seems... there's a bit of a commotion? It's coming from the stairwell, and it's getting closer!"

"What's the panic!" Lei Bao snapped. "They might be leading the monsters around down there, or it might be the noise our people made. Perfect, let's lure the monsters this way and let them..."

His words came to an abrupt end.

Because the "movement" was no longer faintly audible, but had become clearly audible, surging like a tidal wave, filled with frantic roars! It was mixed with the "scratching" sound of insects scraping the ground, the whimpering and howling of dogs and humans, and the muffled thuds of heavy objects being dragged and hitting the walls!

These are definitely not just a few ordinary zombies, or even ordinary mutated beasts! The voice was filled with a chilling, twisted quality!

"Something's not right!" Captain Poison Fang jumped to his feet, his face contorted with rage. "That sound sounds like something from that damn quarantine zone! How did they all come down here?!"

"Bang!"

The heavy metal door of the control room shuddered violently! Terrified screams from his men, along with sudden gunshots and the deafening roar of supernatural powers, erupted from outside!

"Stop them! Ah—!"

"What the hell is this thing! Shoot! Shoot now!"

"Fire! Burn it!"

"Help! It grabbed me! No—!"

A series of piercing screams and chaotic sounds of fighting erupted instantly in the corridor outside the door!

Lei Bao and Captain Poison Fang's expressions changed drastically. They rushed to the door and looked out through the observation window—after just one glance, they felt as if they had fallen into an ice cave!

The dimly lit corridor was in complete chaos.

Their men stationed outside are being relentlessly attacked by a group of twisted monsters that defy all reason and seem to have crawled out of the deepest nightmares!

Some of these monsters are as fast as ghosts, some are incredibly strong, and some carry highly toxic or corrosive bodily fluids. What's even more terrifying is that they completely ignore pain and will frantically pounce and scratch unless they are completely shattered!

What terrified them even more was that the number of these monsters far exceeded their expectations! They were pouring in from the direction of the stairwell, seemingly endless! Their target was very clear—all humans emanating a living aura!

The control room is undoubtedly the most concentrated place in this area!

"What's going on?! Why are they coming straight at us?! Where are Ruan Ning and the others?!" Lei Bao was both shocked and furious, grabbing the team member next to him who had been making the commotion earlier. "Weren't you leading the monsters towards them?!"

The team member was terrified, his face turning pale: "Brother Leopard! I did make a noise on the other side of the basement level, attracting some wandering zombies and monsters... but... but these... these weren't attracted by me at all! They seemed to rush down the stairs directly towards us!"

Captain Venom's Fang glanced sharply at the monitor screen, then at the hellish scene outside the door. A terrifying thought slithered into his mind like a venomous snake: "Damn it... we've been tricked! It's that woman! She lured these monsters here!"

Lei Bao's pupils suddenly contracted as he recalled Ruan Ning's cold, calm eyes and strange skills. A chill instantly shot from the soles of his feet to the top of his head!

He thought he was the hunter setting the trap, but little did he know that he had already become the prey in someone else's trap! Not only did Ruan Ning not die in the monster horde, but he also used these monsters to his advantage, turning them into bait and targets!

"Retreat! Find a way to break through!" Lei Bao roared hoarsely, no longer caring about Chen Yao's mission or the mutated dogs; survival was the priority now!

However, it was too late.

The control room door groaned under the frenzied pounding of several powerful monsters and the spray of some kind of monster with corrosive bodily fluids, and the door frame began to deform.

Desperate screams and roars completely engulfed the control room.

Meanwhile, in a secluded office not far away, Ruan Ning withdrew the wisp of mental energy that had guided the monster horde to lock onto the "largest source of living creature aura." She closed her eyes and slightly adjusted her breathing, meticulously guiding the energy while shielding herself, a process that consumed a considerable amount of her energy.

Da Huo rubbed her hand against the fire, his eyes questioning.

Ruan Ning opened her eyes, the cold light in them still present, but now tinged with a chilling mockery.

"Let's go," she whispered, and like a shadow, she slipped out of the office, avoiding the chaos of the main battlefield, and stealthily made her way to another direction on the second basement level.

"While they're busy 'entertaining guests,' let's go find something of real value."

"As for the 'cooperative results' that Shen Yao wants..." She glanced back at the direction of the control room from which continuous screams came, and a cold smile curled at the corner of her mouth.

"Let them enjoy it themselves."
