Chapter 6 Killing Zombies
Going down to the first floor, the smell of blood and decay in the hallway became even stronger, almost solidified, sticking stickily to the nose and throat.
The emergency lights were even dimmer here, barely outlining the mess in the hall—overturned potted plants, scattered express parcels, and pools of blackened, dried blood.
Ruan Ning gripped the machete tightly; the coldness emanating from the hilt kept her perfectly alert. She pressed herself against the wall, the shadows perfectly concealing her figure, her gaze sweeping across the entire hall like a hawk's.
Heh...heh...
A faint, bellows-like hissing sound came from the mailroom on the right.
Ruan Ning moved silently toward the open door.
Inside, a figure in a deliveryman's uniform was facing away from the door, hunched over something, its shoulders shrugging and making a sickening chewing sound. In the shadows beneath its feet, a foot in a high heel could be vaguely seen, motionless.
Ruan Ning did not hesitate.
She darted in, her steps as light as a cat's. Just as the other person sensed the presence of a living person and stopped chewing, wanting to turn around, the machete in her hand, accompanied by a gust of evil wind, swung fiercely upwards!
puff!
This time, she targeted the relatively vulnerable junction between the cervical spine and skull. The blade precisely sliced in from below the jaw, piercing upwards at an angle! Destroying the brainstem!
The deliveryman zombie froze for a moment, then collapsed softly to the ground, revealing the female corpse beneath him, its face mangled beyond recognition.
Ruan Ning didn't even glance at the female corpse. She quickly drew her knife and retreated, listening warily to any sounds.
The noise from this side seemed to have attracted the attention of the other side of the hall.
Ha!
Hehe!
Two figures staggered out of the shadows at the stairwell leading to the underground parking garage. One was wearing a suit and had a protruding belly, while the other was a young woman in a fashionable short skirt, but half of her body was stained with dark red, and she walked with a limp.
Their cloudy eyes immediately locked onto Ruan Ning, who was standing at the door of the mailroom. They roared and sped up, still clumsy, but with their arms outstretched, they instinctively craved fresh flesh and blood, flanking her from the left and right.
“Two…” Ruan Ning’s eyes narrowed. Instead of backing down, she took the initiative to meet them!
She charged at the slightly faster zombie in the short skirt first. Just as its withered arm reached for her, she nimbly dodged to the side, simultaneously kicking out with lightning speed, striking its knee hard!
Crack!
A clear cracking sound rang out. The short-skirted zombie lost its balance and lurched forward.
Without even looking, Ruan Ning used the force of the kick to spin around, drawing a semi-circle with her machete as she faced another approaching zombie in a suit.
This fat zombie seemed to be even stronger, waving its arms wildly and bringing with it a foul stench.
Ruan Ning ducked to avoid the claws and slashed horizontally with his cleaver, aiming for its relatively slender ankle!
Pfft!
The blade sliced through flesh and severed tendons. The zombie in the suit collapsed to the ground with a heavy thud.
Without the slightest hesitation, Ruan Ning stepped forward and brought his knife down!
Snap! Snap!
Two clean, swift slashes precisely destroyed the heads of the two fallen zombies.
The hall fell silent again, with only three gradually cooling corpses and an even stronger stench remaining.
Ruan Ning was slightly out of breath, fine beads of sweat appearing on her forehead. The continuous kills, especially dealing with two at the same time, had taken a toll on her physical and mental strength. She felt a slight ache in her arm muscles, but the warm current from the spiritual spring within her quickly circulated, relieving the soreness.
She stood in the center of the dim, blood-soaked hall, with grotesque corpses at her feet and bloodstains splattered all over her body, yet her eyes shone with an astonishing light.
These few scattered zombies proved her strength and gave her a more direct understanding of early-stage zombies. Her strength, speed, reaction time, and skills were all honed in actual combat.
She walked to the tightly closed glass door of the apartment and looked out through the blood-stained glass. There were more and more shadowy, staggering figures on the street, and occasionally a scream or a crash could be heard in the distance, quickly fading into the deathly silence.
This "safe zone" is no longer safe, or rather, the whole world has fallen.
Practicing in the stairwell alone isn't enough. She needs more real-world experience and to adapt to the wider, more dangerous world outside.
Upon reaching the ground level of the residential complex, a few scattered zombies roamed about. Because it was a high-end apartment building, there weren't many residents. Security was strict, and outsiders couldn't easily get in.
Ruan Ning, carrying a cleaver, quietly approached the zombie. With a swing of the cleaver, the zombie's head flew off.
Her appearance and movements attracted the nearby zombies. Ruan Ning beheaded them one by one, successfully getting herself dirty in the process. Fortunately, her black clothes made it less noticeable.
Someone heard the noise downstairs and hid behind the curtains to watch Ruan Ning kill zombies.
They looked at them like they were idiots. Because the neighborhood had high security and theft prevention measures, these people believed that these slow-moving zombies wouldn't be able to break down the door and eat them.
They still harbored illusions about the government and the army, and were hoping for the arrival of the rescue team.
Although the water and electricity in the community have been cut off, there is a reservoir on the roof of Meidong Building, so there is no need to worry about water pollution for the time being. However, the water will eventually run out.
Furthermore, they are unaware that zombies can evolve. If they don't go out and practice killing zombies now, the day they step outside and face zombies head-on, they will only become zombie food.
Ruan Ning wasn't a savior, so naturally she wouldn't proactively remind them. When they finished eating, they would naturally leave the house on their own.
