Jian Yunxi has won the "Best Written Petition" award in the Jessup Moot Court Competition. Logically, she doesn't need to participate in the Jessup competition again. After all, the same item can only be added once for the postgraduate entrance examination.
However, before the preliminary round, the contestant in charge of the first debate was hospitalized due to appendicitis. This incident was so sudden that it caught everyone off guard. If the substitute head of state wanted to pass the preliminary round smoothly, he must be particularly familiar with the competition, and he must be selected from the contestants who had participated before.
After much deliberation, Professor Li Ming finally chose Jian Yunxi. In her words, Jian Yunxi is indeed a good writer, but she doesn't know how good her court debate skills are.
Jian Yunxi was not afraid of the so-called "provocation" at all. In fact, she also wanted to try whether she could demonstrate her value as a first debater in such an important competition as Jessup.
The theme in 2010 was "Maritime territorial disputes caused by climate change and the protection of the rights of climate refugees." Neither the map of island countries submerged by sea water nor the emergency report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in the case file could calm her down.
Fortunately, she was not the one writing the petition this time, otherwise she would have mixed in a lot of personal feelings.
Jian Yunxi remembered that when Professor Li Ming handed her the position of chief debater in the plaintiff's seat, he specifically pointed out the key controversial point in the case: "How should the territorial sea baseline of Bartica (a fictitious island country) be defined as the country is submerged?"
The old professor's eyes were sharp behind his glasses. "This is not only a legal issue, but also a question of the survival of civilization."
Jian Yunxi asked Lu Yang for help: "I want to make a three-dimensional nautical chart. Can I turn the fixed baseline into a dynamic one?"
Lu Yang understood what he meant, and this three-dimensional sea chart became the key to Jian Yunxi and her team's victory.
The Kyoto University team made it all the way from the preliminary round to the final, and even achieved the first place in the East Asia region. They successfully entered the global competition this year.
In April 2010, Jian Yunxi and the Beijing University team flew to The Hague, Netherlands, and participated in the Jessup Global Competition at the Peace Palace.
In the ancient building that houses the International Court of Justice, she stood in the courtroom that had tried war criminals and projected the dynamic sea chart.
Jian Yunxi felt that everything was like a dream. The Hague is the holy temple for all legal professionals.
“Your Honor,” her voice echoed under the dome where the genocide case was once tried, “when the sea floods not only the country but also the coordinates of civilization—”
The beam of light suddenly split, turning into countless light points that formed the words of Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, flowing between the nameplates of the national teams.
"——What longitude and latitude should we use to mark these national anthems that are about to disappear?"
Professor Li Ming chose Jian Yunxi as the substitute chief debater after considering many factors, not only because of her solid foundation, but also because of the infectiousness of her emotions.
As soon as Jian Yunxi said this, everyone fell silent.
In the end, the Kyoto University team lived up to expectations and won first place in the Jessup Global Competition. This was also the first time in Kyoto University’s history that it won first place in a global competition. You can imagine how valuable this achievement is.
"Jian Yunxi."
"Qin Huan?" Jian Yunxi didn't expect to meet Qin Huan. She knew that Qin Huan was an exchange student at the Hague campus of Leiden University, but Qin Huan did not participate in the competition.
"Jian Yunxi, your court debate is amazing, much better than I remembered." When Qin Huan saw Jian Yunxi on the stage, he actually regretted his impulsiveness.
After all, she had more opportunities staying at Kyoto University. When she arrived in The Hague, she found that exchange students could not participate in such international competitions. What's more, she was discriminated against.
Of course, she couldn't complain to Jian Yunxi about this, because she did learn something and she even planned to apply for a graduate degree in Leiden.
Of course, Jian Yunxi did not ask why Qin Huan did not participate in the competition. She also guessed that it was probably arranged by the school. After all, when playing against foreign teams, there were very few Chinese people. It was probably because of xenophobia.
Qin Huan had a very high opinion of The Hague, and she even recommended Jian Yunxi to study for a master's degree here.
"Jian Yunxi, I guess that since you won first place this time, famous universities around the world will definitely extend olive branches to you. I recommend that you choose The Hague."
But Jian Yunxi had no intention of studying abroad for a master's degree. She felt particularly uncomfortable during her first few days in The Hague and had trouble acclimatizing to the climate there. She was so scared that she thought her anorexia had come back.
"Qin Huan," Jian Yunxi shook his head: "I don't plan to go abroad."
"Why?" Qin Huan couldn't say anything bad about Jingda because of her father. She could only repeat things like "ideal" and "freedom".
"Qin Huan, you know, I had already planned my future path when I first entered college."
"Is it because of your boyfriend? Jian Yunxi, your life is your own. I hope you won't regret it."
How could she regret it? Jian Yunxi thought, she had already made the decision.
Although she would not go abroad, she and Lu Yang agreed that as long as he received an olive branch from Stanford, he must go.
She will not become a stumbling block for Lu Yang.
When Jian Yunxi arrived at the Capital Airport, it was almost three o'clock in the morning, and Lu Yang actually drove over to pick her up.
"Lu Yang, have you been waiting for a long time?"
Beijing in April was still a bit chilly! When Lu Yang held Jian Yunxi's hand, she shivered from the cold. Jian Yunxi felt so distressed, but Lu Yang said "it's okay". After saying goodbye to the debate team members, Jian Yunxi got into the car driven by Lu Yang.
"What made you think of driving here?"
"I happened to be going home yesterday, and I thought it would be too late when you arrived, and I didn't know if I could get a taxi, so it would be safer to drive."
