The first CNC milling machine was developed under the leadership of National Tsinghua University.
The research began in 1958. At that time, Pan Changqing and Zhao Yingjie had already left the school, but Zheng Shuhua was still there, and she was very clear about the research process.
Research on CNC milling machines was jointly conducted by the Department of Precision Instrumentation, the Department of Automatic Control, and the Department of Electrical Engineering, responsible for the machine's hydraulic system, digital control, and stepper motor and drive, respectively. Jingcheng Machine Tool Works, as an external collaborator, was responsible for providing the milling machines and maintaining them.
This work was led by the Precision Instrument Department. The initial requirement was to complete it within half a year, but it actually took a few months longer and almost a year.
The participants had no knowledge of CNC machine tools and no relevant technical documentation. What could they rely on? An advertisement for a CNC machine tool, brought back from Big Brother, featured a photo of the machine tool. Next to it was a cabinet, slightly shorter than an adult, housing the CNC system. The advertisement also listed several performance indicators, but did not provide a block diagram of the CNC system.
That's all the information.
They had to rely on themselves to complete the task. Based on the characteristics of the machine tool, the processing requirements, and the speed of the paper tape input machine, they determined the technical indicators and structural block diagram of the CNC machine.
After the basic plan is determined, all pre-production work such as logic design, unit circuit design, power supply design, and production drawing design will be completed.
This group of researchers spent a year developing a CNC milling machine from scratch, which inspired a generation of machine tool workers to scale the pinnacle of technology and ushered in a new era of machine tool production and research in my country.
Later, many machine tool factories broke through the technical bottleneck.
If we can keep doing this, we shouldn't lag too far behind the world's leading level.
Unfortunately, due to various reasons, the independent research was delayed for several years and almost came to a standstill.
But it doesn't matter, it's not too late, there's still a chance. We still have the passion for research and development, and the passion for technological innovation.
Moreover, others have been able to achieve results from nothing. They have already stood on their shoulders, so how can they not achieve the same?
