Chapter 32 Raising Rabbits

Xu Miaomiao was not very familiar with the black market in the town, but she could roughly find its location. She went there according to her memory.

This is a small alley. Xu Miaomiao saw two people standing at the entrance of the alley looking around from afar, and she knew that she was not mistaken. These two people were lookouts.

Because speculation and profiteering are now strictly punished, people with red armbands come to arrest people from time to time, so these two people are the lookouts. When someone comes, they shout and the people in the black market flee in all directions.

Xu Miaomiao was afraid of meeting someone who knew her here, so before coming in, she took a pair of black-framed glasses from the villa and wrapped herself in a silk scarf.

Although she was wrapped tightly, one could still tell from the exposed skin that she was a fair-skinned girl.

The two people who were watching at the entrance of the alley looked at the unfamiliar girl, but since she didn't look like the one wearing a red armband, they looked at her for a few seconds and then looked away and continued to stare outside.

There is a big gap between the black market here and the Beijing market. The black market in Beijing is large in scale and has a wide variety of goods. As long as you can afford it, there is nothing you can't buy.

But this is just a black market in the town, and it basically sells some farmers' things, vegetables grown by themselves, and saved grains.

There were some new things, but they were too few. Xu Miaomiao lowered her head and searched the stalls on both sides for what she wanted.

She looked around but couldn't find anyone selling chicks or ducklings. She felt a little disappointed and thought that she might have thought things were too simple.

Not only were there no chicks or ducklings, there wasn't even any baby rabbits for sale. Instead, there was a man selling big rabbits, and it looked like he had caught them himself in the mountains.

Xu Miaomiao could only settle for the second best and think of buying a few big rabbits and letting them reproduce on their own, so she turned around and went back.

The man selling the rabbits was an old man in his fifties. He was very thin, with wrinkles all over his face. There were three deep lines between his eyebrows, which showed that his owner was unhappy.

Xu Miaomiao first squatted down and looked at the rabbits. They should have been caught in a trap, so they only had some minor injuries on their legs, and there was no problem overall.

Xu Miaomiao only started asking the price after she was satisfied with the rabbit's condition. "Uncle, how much do you want for this rabbit?"

The old man looked up and looked at Xu Miaomiao deeply for a while, as if evaluating whether she could buy something, and his voice was a little hoarse when he spoke again.

"Sold by the piece, ten dollars each."

Xu Miaomiao frowned. She felt it was a bit expensive. An old hen was only one dollar and two cents per pound, and a rabbit weighed only about six or seven pounds, even with fur.

The old man must have been standing there all morning. Finally, someone asked for the price. He explained anxiously, "You can find someone who knows how to clean up this rabbit fur and make it into scarves and gloves for the winter. You won't lose out."

Seeing that she didn't respond, the old man pulled a rabbit out of the box by its ears and said anxiously, "Look at this rabbit, it already has babies. If you buy it and raise it for a few days, you can get a whole litter of baby rabbits!"

After hearing what the old man said, Xu Miaomiao's eyes lit up. This wouldn't take any effort at all!

But Xu Miaomiao secretly looked at the old man again. He was wearing clothes with several layers of patches. He was very dark and thin, almost skin and bones.

Xu Miaomiao thought that he should be younger than her grandfather, but he looked much worse than Grandpa Xu.

Thinking of his old man, Xu Miaomiao couldn't help but feel a little soft-hearted, and his tone of voice softened. "Uncle, I bought this rabbit. Can you help me see how many males and females there are here?"

The old man was shocked by the implication of her words. After a long while, he asked stumblingly in disbelief, "You...are you going to buy them all?"

Xu Miaomiao thought about the more than ten acres of pasture in the space and nodded calmly. She could no longer raise cattle and sheep, so she could only raise rabbits.

The old man got the confirmation and his hands were shaking with excitement. He was busy helping Xu Miaomiao check the gender of the rabbit in the cage.

There were five rabbits in the cage, and in the end only one was a male, the rest were female.

Xu Miaomiao thought about it and decided that one stud would be enough. Even if that didn’t work, she could just buy a few more when the time came.

The old man helped her tie up the rabbits and put them in the backpack. When he took the five big unity notes handed to him by Xu Miaomiao, his eyes were a little moist.

Xu Miaomiao bought a rabbit and prepared to leave, because buying a rabbit gave her inspiration. She didn’t have to buy chicks or ducklings. She could buy chicken eggs and duck eggs from the team.

Because there is an incubator in the farm in the space, as long as she buys the eggs, puts them in and turns on the electricity, they will hatch naturally.

Xu Miaomiao didn't stay in the black market for long. She walked out hurriedly with her backpack on her back.

After leaving the black market, she pretended to sort out the things in the backpack, but in fact she was moving the rabbits to the pasture. After moving the rabbits, she carried the light backpack to the supply and marketing cooperative.

When I arrived at the supply and marketing cooperative, I didn't see Lin Fang and Feng Qingqing. They might have gone to the department store.

Xu Miaomiao bought some brown sugar candles and some candied snacks. Looking at the big bags of delicious food in her hands, she couldn't help but sigh that things are really cheap nowadays. She spent less than five yuan to buy so many things.

Xu Miaomiao was about to go out for dinner, but her attention was attracted by the cloth counter.

Over there, an old lady was buying cloth with her daughter. From what they said, it seemed that the girl was getting married and wanted to buy some cloth to make clothes for her partner.

Xu Miaomiao thought about the few times she met Chen Chen, he seemed to be wearing those two pieces of clothes with patches on them.

Although the Chen family's conditions are among the best in the team, they are lucky enough to have enough food and warm clothes. It is impossible for them to have new clothes every year.

Xu Miaomiao turned around and walked towards the cloth counter.

Xu Miaomiao had a lot of cloth coupons in her hand, and finally she chose two pieces of cloth, one was army green and the other was navy blue.

Xu Miaomiao thought the cloth was quite cheap. With cloth coupons, one meter was 1.5 yuan, so she bought five meters, thinking it would be enough to make a set of clothes.

Xu Miaomiao put the cloth in the backpack, thinking that it was almost ten o'clock and she had come out early in the morning without eating, so she might as well stop by the state-owned restaurant to buy some food.

Xu Miaomiao arrived early and there were not many people eating in the restaurant. The waiter saw that she was well dressed and had a fair complexion, so he didn't dare to show off.

Xu Miaomiao ordered a serving of braised pork, and seeing that the freshly-baked steamed buns looked quite appetizing, she ordered five as well.

After Xu Miaomiao went out, she found a corner and put some of the meat, eggs, vegetables and other things in the villa into her backpack.

This way she would have a source of food when she went back to make delicious food. Finally, she put the cloth she bought for Chen Chen on the top to cover the things.

Thinking that Chen Chen hadn't eaten yet, Xu Miaomiao quickened her pace, thinking of letting him eat before everyone else came back.
