Chapter 45: It is difficult for an honest official to judge family affairs
The two brothers looked at each other. When Zhou Yong saw his younger brother, he remembered that his mother had appendicitis.
Seeing that his elder brother was very excited, Zhou Gang trotted towards Zhou Yong, mistakenly thinking that his elder brother appeared in the hospital to see his mother.
"Brother, why didn't you tell me you were here? Mom would be very happy if she knew you were here..."
Cao Biao and his companions looked at each other, all of them confused.
After Zhou Gang finished speaking, he looked at Liu Dazhuang and the others and said with a smile: "Captain, you guys are here too? My mother is fine now. Thank you all for your concern. I'll take you to the ward now..."
Xing Laoqi and the other two looked at Zhou Yong who was silent. If Zhou Gang hadn't said anything, they wouldn't have known that Zhou Yong's mother was in the hospital.
The main reason is that Huaixi Village has a large population, and they have to deal with a lot of trivial matters every day, so they cannot pay attention to the situation of every household.
Cao Biao frowned, looked at Zhou Yong and asked, "Why didn't you tell me that your aunt was in the hospital?"
After hearing what Cao Biao said, Zhou Gang's excited expression froze.
Zhou Yong glanced at his second brother: "She has nothing to do with me."
After saying this, Zhou Yong was about to leave, but Zhou Gang grabbed him.
"Brother, no matter what brought you to the hospital, since you are here, go see mom! You don't know, mom almost died..."
Zhou Yong's mother had appendicitis and perforation. If she hadn't been lucky, she would have died.
"Go away, don't block my way."
"Brother?"
Zhou Yong shook off Zhou Gang's hand that was holding his arm and left without looking back.
Zhou Gang stamped his feet and stood there sighing.
Cao Biao and others knew about the grievances between Zhou Yong and the Zhou family, and they didn't know how to comfort Zhou Gang.
"Your eldest brother has a bad temper. I'll talk to him later."
Zhou Gangqiang smiled: "Captain, this is not my brother's fault."
Xing Laoqi asked which ward Zhou Gang's mother was in and planned to go over to see her later.
Although Zhou Yong had a very unpleasant quarrel with the Zhou family, as a friend, he could not pretend to know nothing when he learned that his mother was hospitalized for surgery.
Visiting a sick patient to show your appreciation is a natural way of life.
Zhou Gang told them the location of the ward where his mother was staying, and then left with his head hung.
Cao Biao sighed: "It's been three years, and Zhou Yong still can't get over the hurdle in his heart."
Xing Laoqi continued: "If I were Zhou Yong, I would do the same. If it weren't for his mother, he would be slandered and unable to hold his head up..."
Liu Dazhuang sighed: "Her mother had a very good idea at the beginning. She thought that Zhou Yong would rise to fame overnight if he married Li Caiyun, but what is the actual situation?"
Zhou Yong was promoted to timekeeper by Li Baotian, but at the same time he became a joke and a topic of conversation among villagers after dinner.
"Okay, let's not talk about Chen Zhi and Ran Gu..."
The three of them went to visit Zhou Yong's mother while talking. None of them had any preparation and each left two cents.
When they came back, Zhou Yong was sitting in front of Ma San's bed in a daze. Cao Biao walked up to him and patted him on the shoulder.
"Your mother is recovering well and will be discharged from the hospital tomorrow."
Zhou Yong's expression was very stable, and Cao Biao didn't say anything after seeing this.
A few of them chatted for a while, and Liu Dazhuang and Xing Laoqi were so sleepy that they kept kowtowing.
Cao Biao let them rest while he and Zhou Yong took care of Ma San.
He said it very well. Before nine o'clock, he fell on the hospital bed and went to see Zhou Gong.
Fortunately, there were three vacant beds in the four-person ward, otherwise they would have nowhere to rest.
Zhou Yong covered each of them with a quilt, and seeing that everyone was sleeping soundly, he left the ward.
He went to relieve himself first, and on his way back from the toilet, he accidentally saw his mother Cui Shufen in a ward.
Zhou Yong inexplicably took a step back and stopped. He put his hands in his trouser pockets and looked into the ward.
From his position he could see everything going on in the ward, but the people in the ward could not see him.
Cui Shufen sat on the hospital bed, feeling uncomfortable in her chest.
"Mom, how about I go and call the doctor on duty!"
Cui Shufen shook her head and beat her chest with one hand.
"It's okay. Maybe she's been lying down for too long. Just help her get up and move around."
Zhou Gang looked worried and helped Cui Shufen down.
"Mom, be careful with the knife."
"Don't worry, Mom knows what's going on."
Cui Shufen strolled in the ward in small steps, and Zhou Gang followed her every step, afraid that she would bump into something or fall.
Zhou Yong pursed his lips when he saw this, glanced at Cui Shufen who looked very haggard, and quickly left the place.
After he left, Cui Shufen said, "I wonder if your eldest brother has left the hospital. How about Mom go over and take a look?"
Zhou Gang pursed his lips: "Mom, you'd better not go."
He didn't say the rest, but how could Cui Shufen not know what her son was thinking.
She sighed, her face full of sadness. Zhou Gang clenched his hand into a fist, not knowing what to say.
Even a fair judge cannot settle family disputes, as everyone has his or her own sufferings.
Neither Cui Shufen nor Zhou Yong, mother and son, slept well that night.
Zhou Yong fell into a confused sleep in the late night, dreaming of the scenes in which Cui Shufen forced him to become the son-in-law of the Li family.
In the dream, Zhou Yong begged his mother not to do that, just as he had done in reality. He had his own dignity and didn't want to live with others stabbing him in the back.
Cui Shufen put a kitchen knife against her neck, threatening to kill herself. If he didn't agree, his mother would cut his throat right there...
In reality, Zhou Yong’s face was filled with pain. He lay on the hospital bed with a frown on his face, shaking his head, muttering to himself: “I promise you, I promise you…”
Liu Dazhuang and Xing Laoqi looked at each other.
"Zhou Yong had a nightmare?"
Xing Laoqi said this as he walked towards the bed where Zhou Yong was lying, and stepped forward to pull him: "Zhou Yong, wake up."
Zhou Yong sat up suddenly, panting heavily, and Xing Laoqi was startled by him.
He looked around and put his hands over his head before he realized it was all a dream.
"Zhou Yong, what's wrong with you?"
He shook his head, threw back the quilt, got up from the bed, and left the ward without saying a word.
Xing Laoqi looked at Liu Dazhuang, and before they could speak to each other, Cao Biao walked in leisurely, carrying breakfast.
Ma San hasn't woken up yet. This kid is sleeping like a dead pig.
Cao Biao put down his breakfast and didn't see Zhou Yong in the ward, so he couldn't help but ask.
"You left without any explanation?"
Xing Laoqi nodded: "Yeah, and I think he's weird."
Weird?
Cao Biao thought for a moment, but couldn't guess what happened to Zhou Yong: "I'll go find him."
Zhou Yong is a thoughtful person who will not easily speak his mind, and Cao Biao understands his temperament.
Cao Biao went to the bathroom to look for him first, but didn't find Zhou Yong, so he went to the ward where his mother was to check on the situation.
"Where did this person go?"
Zhou Yong was not in his mother's ward, so he did not go in.
Cao Biao continued looking for him and saw Zhou Yong near the hospital gate.
"Fuck, you're eating alone?"
Cao Biao came over and snatched the half-smoked cigarette from Zhou Yong's hand, and started smoking it himself.
"I'm dying of suffocation."
