On the day the report cards were handed out, everyone arrived at school early. As they entered the school gate, Xia Minmin and Tang Meng ran into Gu Fei and the class monitor, Xi Ang.
Gu Fei held a basketball in one hand and had the other hand on Xi Ang's shoulder, the two chatting and laughing.
Xia Minmin said, "Good morning, Gu Fei, Xi Ang, are you going to play basketball later?"
Gu Fei glanced at his expressionless friend and said, "Yeah, the class monitor and the teacher asked you to grade the papers. Do you know the final exam results?"
Xia Minmin shook her head. "It was very late when I finished grading the papers that day. I didn't record the scores and went home."
Gu Fei was greatly disappointed. "I thought you already knew the results. My mom said if I improve this time, she'll take me to Hong Kong."
Tang Meng was very interested in this. "I also want to go to Hong Kong. When I watch Hong Kong TV dramas, I think the girls there dress so fashionably."
Xia Minmin touched her hand and raised it, "I want to go too, but I want to go eat delicious food."
Gu Fei moved the hand on Xi Ang's shoulder. "Aren't you worried about your grades? What if you're always second place again?"
Xi Ang rolled his eyes at him, shrugged, and said, "Let go."
Xi Ang's science grades are better than Xia Minmin's; he can usually get full marks in science subjects, but he often fails English.
"Xiang, I reckon you'll be second again!" Gu Fei said with a smile.
Gu Fei didn't say that on purpose, but because Xi Ang had been second in every monthly exam since the start of the semester, earning him the nickname "perennial runner-up" from his classmates.
Sion himself doesn't mind this statement; he is well aware of his weaknesses.
"Class monitor, the English learning method you told me before was very effective. I've made great progress in the last two exams. Given time, I might catch up with you. You'd better watch out."
"Healthy competition, without fear. Bring it on."
Gu Fei glanced at his watch. "You two stop talking tough to each other. We're going to be late."
Upon hearing the word "late," the four of them ran to the classroom like madmen.
Old Lu's various methods of disciplining students are well-known among generations of students. He instills fear in students without resorting to physical violence or verbal abuse, which is quite remarkable.
When we got to the second floor, Teacher Lu was already standing on the podium giving a speech.
To avoid being noticed, they deliberately crouched down and entered through the back door. All four of them were seated in the last row, so they wouldn't be discovered if they paid a little attention.
As the four of them crouched down and walked through the corridor outside the classroom, slipping from the front door to the back door, Teacher Lu noticed them.
"Three of our class officers still haven't arrived? Winter break hasn't even officially started yet, and they're already getting lazy."
Seeing that Teacher Lu was implying something, the students in the class looked around, wanting to see which few were so audacious as to arrive later than Teacher Lu.
Gu Fei grinned and said, "Lu Ban, I just checked, no one is late. Are you seeing things?"
Teacher Lu sneered, "I'll give the four of you who were late a break and leave you alone for now. Come to my office later. Those who don't come will face the consequences, and there will be punishment waiting for you even next year."
The four of them exchanged glances. Oh no, their homework was going to increase dramatically.
"Quiet! Let's continue with the final exam results."
"Our class got first place in all seven courses this time, including perfect scores in math and English. Let's give them a round of applause!"
Upon hearing this, everyone had already guessed who the two perfect scorers were.
"Teacher, are you Xia Minmin and Xi Ang?"
Teacher Lu nodded with a smile.
"Our class achieved the highest overall score in the entire grade this time, with an average score seven points higher than Class 2! Let's all keep up the good work next year!"
"Alright, I won't be an annoying homeroom teacher anymore. After I hand out the winter break homework, the break will begin. If you need your report cards, you can come here and copy them yourself."
"Subject representatives, come up and distribute the test papers."
The students who had received all the exam papers fell completely silent; sometimes silence is the best response.
"If there's nothing else, we'll have a holiday. Please remember, no swimming in the sea! You all know what you can and can't do, so I won't repeat it."
In order to have a peaceful and quiet New Year, most students gave up copying their report cards and went straight home with their schoolbags.
Only Xia Minmin and her two friends remained in the classroom.
Gu Fei rested his chin on the desk. "Sigh, my winter vacation is completely ruined. Teacher Lu will probably prepare a lot of test questions for us."
Tang Meng slammed her hand on the desk, the sudden sound startling the three students who were in a daze.
She said expressionlessly, "Whether you stick your neck out or not, you're going to get hurt anyway, so we might as well hurry up and wait. Maybe Teacher Lu will give us more homework."
The four of them grabbed their schoolbags and rushed out, but Xia Minmin had to check the doors and windows and locks, so she was a little slower than the other three.
"You guys are making things difficult for yourselves before the holiday. Should I punish you or not?"
Gu Fei said, "I believe that Ms. Lu, who is beautiful and kind-hearted, will definitely forgive us for our small mistake. It's really inappropriate to assign so much homework during the Chinese New Year."
"Are you implying that if I give you extra homework, it makes me ugly and wicked?"
Xi Ang said, "Teacher Lu, Gu Fei didn't mean that. We were wrong to be late this time, and we promise we won't do it again. Please forgive us this time."
This was the first time Xia Minmin had ever heard Xi Ang speak so softly.
Tang Meng said, "Teacher Lu, please forgive us this time, since this is our first offense! Please!"
Xia Minmin stood outside the office listening intently as Teacher Lu lectured the three of them, nodding occasionally in agreement.
