"He eats and drinks my food every day, and he eats all by himself. I've raised a thankless child," Chen Chunhua scolded, hands on her hips.
"Who are you cursing! If she hadn't been with you, things wouldn't have turned out like this. It's just a piece of candy, is it really that big of a deal? You're so petty!" Li Chunmei turned around, grabbed a handful of candy, and threw it at Chen Chunhua.
"Since you love to eat so much, I'll treat you to some more."
"You!!" Chen Chunhua glared at Li Chunmei with eyes blazing with fury, as if she wanted to devour her.
"Come and hit me if you dare! I'm not afraid of you!" Chen Chunhua really didn't dare. She was a head shorter than Li Chunmei, and she had tried to fight her before when they separated the family, but she lost.
"Mom, go for it! Mom, go for it!" Xia Minmin saw the sparks flying between the two and immediately cheered for her mother.
Seeing this, Chen Chunhua immediately changed her strategy, sitting on the ground and crying loudly, "Why am I so unlucky to have married such a coward? His wife is being bullied and he doesn't even come out to help."
Xia Jianguo had just returned from picking vegetables in the garden behind the house when he heard Chen Chunhua crying. He pulled his wife aside and asked, "What's wrong with you two?"
"It's nothing, she's just being a jerk! Jianguo, you chop the vegetables and I'll cook later." Li Chunmei rolled her eyes.
"Keep crying and making a scene, or all the neighbors will come out before your brother even gets out." Li Chunmei grabbed Chen Chunhua's groin. Chen Chunhua was very concerned about saving face.
Chen Chunhua immediately stood up, picked up her youngest son, and said to Xia Xiaomei, "I'll see if you, this good second sister-in-law, are really good!"
"Little sister, come in with me." He gave Xia Minmin's ear a quick twist as a warning for her earlier misbehavior.
Xia Minmin followed Li Chunmei inside. "Little sister, what are you thinking? Do you want to go out and work?"
Xia Xiaomei twisted her hands, clearly terrified and uneasy. "Second sister-in-law, I...I don't know. I plan to go out to work with my friends after the New Year and I want to borrow your travel expenses."
Li Chunmei patted her hands. "Here's the thing, your second brother and I are planning to go to Shenzhen. Do you want to come with us? You can help us take care of Xiaomin, and we'll pay you a salary. It might not be much at first, but if you do well, we'll increase it. If you don't do well, we'll ask someone we know to find you a factory job. Go back and think about it."
Xia Xiaomei immediately agreed, "Second sister-in-law, I'm willing. I was ignorant before, I'm sorry."
Xia Xiaomei bowed with tears in her eyes; it was clear that she had had a very difficult two years.
From next door, Chen Chunhua shouted, "Xia Jianshe, look at what kind of sisters you have! None of them respect you as their older brother. How can they bully your wife like this?"
“My mother-in-law fell ill as soon as I married into the family, and all the money in the house went to her treatment. I was pregnant and didn’t even have a bite of meat to eat.”
"Your younger sister took care of me for two years, and she always had a long face. People who didn't know better would think I was dead. Your older sister even came to ask me for money!"
“If I hadn’t been supporting her, she would have been sold long ago.”
"And your second brother's wife is all talk and no action. Now all the relatives in the family think it's my fault."
"Your family is full of bad apples. This one-story house was even divided between the two brothers. You're a whole family of poor bastards!"
"Enough!! What more do you want from me? Isn't it your fault that my sister-in-law doesn't treat me like an older brother? Do you still want to live together? Do you still want a divorce?!"
Li Chunmei didn't say anything after hearing these words, but simply told Xia Xiaomei not to take them to heart.
