Chapter 6 A Few Things About Street vending

After dinner, everyone worked together to unload the goods, and the driver took the fare and left.

They also had to inventory and sort the goods before putting them into Li Zhonghua's empty house.

Xia Jianguo counted the items on the order form one by one, "Hmm, the quantities are all correct."

"This time we're ordering in large quantities, and the wholesalers in the city are offering us prices that are 25% cheaper than those in the county. Should we continue to retail at the current prices?"

“Sell it at the current price! Selling it too cheaply will arouse jealousy from our competitors, and might even attract thugs and bullies to cause trouble,” Li Zhonghua replied.

The 1980s and 90s were the worst period for public security. Xia Minmin often heard about drive-by robberies when she was a child, and there were even more thieves.

Grandma Xia looked at the room full of goods and couldn't help but feel troubled. "How long will it take to buy all this stuff?"

Xia Jianguo comforted her, "It's alright, Mom. My brother-in-law and I have already discussed it. We plan to wholesale some of it, at the county's wholesale price."

“You don’t need much capital to get goods from us. All you need is a bicycle, and you can start selling them with just fifty or sixty yuan in capital,” Li Zhonghua reassured him.

"Grandma, don't worry, Xiaomin will work hard to sell the goods," Xia Minmin said cheerfully, lying on her grandma's lap.

Grandma Xia said, "Now that you all have a plan, I'm relieved. When I was selling pickled vegetables at the market today, I asked someone to pass on a message to your dad, asking him to come and help tomorrow."

"Thank you, Mom!"

Grandma Xia looked at her son and son-in-law and said, "Ever since you two decided to go to the wholesale market to buy goods, I haven't slept well that night. I was worried that something might happen to you on the way. I still remember the first time Zhonghua went to escort the truck back, he was covered in injuries. I couldn't sleep well before he came back every time he went out. Seeing that you both came back safe and sound, I can finally sleep peacefully tonight."

Li Chunmei hugged Grandma Xia and said, "Mom, I'm sorry, we've made you worry."

Grandma Xia patted Li Chunmei's head just like she used to when she was a child.

After cleaning up, Xia Jianguo and his family went home.

As they walked, Xia Jianguo asked, "Chunmei, how was your day?"

"Running a restaurant is really tiring, it's really tough, I just want to go to sleep right now." Li Chunmei looked exhausted.

"But Xiaomin was very well-behaved today; she recited ten Tang poems."

Xia Jianguo bounced Xia Minmin in his arms, and when Xia Minmin wasn't paying attention, he rubbed her with his beard.

Xia Minmin only thought Xia Jianguo was very childish!

After returning home, the family quickly washed up, turned off the lights, and went to sleep. Xia Jianguo had been on edge the whole day buying goods, not daring to slack off in the slightest. He was still very nervous about using a third of the family's money to buy the goods. He was finally able to sleep peacefully after getting home.

Xia Minmin woke up late this morning and was reciting Tang poems in her mind when she heard Xia Jianguo snoring.

Making a sandwich was too difficult. Xia Minmin was prone to catching a cold in winter and liked to kick off the covers, so Li Chunmei let her sleep in the middle. That night, Xia Minmin tried very hard to remember when she had slept alone, but she couldn't recall it even after falling asleep.

After the rooster crowed, everyone took a short nap before getting up.

Li Chunmei dressed Xia Minmin up a bit; Xia Minmin was the star of the day.

This morning, Li Zhonghua will help deliver the goods to my stall before I go to work. I'll have to rely on Grandpa Xia to restock.

When we arrived at Li Zhonghua's house, Grandpa Xia had already arrived. The old man must have gotten up very early, fed all the livestock, and then walked over. It's about a 30-minute walk from here to his old home.

Grandma Xia has already prepared breakfast, which is rice soup with a poached egg.

After breakfast, everyone tied up the goods and got ready to set off. When they arrived at the stall, Xia Jianguo's friend had already helped them reserve a spot.

"Good morning, Brother Xia, Brother Hua."

Xia Jianguo saw Li Zhonghua coming over and asked, "Brother Hua, why did you come today?"

"This is the truckload of goods that Jianguo and I bought yesterday. Once we sell them, we can have a good New Year."

After helping Xia Jianguo unload the goods, Li Zhonghua went to work.

Xia Jianguo's friend came over to help set up the stall and arrange the goods, saying, "I know you went to get more goods yesterday, so I came early today to reserve a spot for you."

"Thanks." Xia Jianguo offered his friend a cigarette.

"Brother Xia, are you going to start selling couplets in a few days?"

"Yes, I went to the wholesale market in the city yesterday and bought a truckload of goods. I don't know when I'll be able to sell them all. I can only start selling couplets after I've sold most of them."

"Xiao Wang, if you have any friends who want to buy some goods in bulk to make money, they can come to me to get them. The prices are the same as in the county, and you can buy less if you want."

"Okay, I'll help you promote it. It's almost Chinese New Year and everyone wants to have a prosperous year. If you go to the county town to buy goods, you won't make money if you don't have enough. If you have too much, you don't have enough capital, and more importantly, you might not be able to sell it all."

As they were talking, customers came to inquire about prices. Watching Xia Minmin skillfully quote prices and settle accounts, Xia Jianguo's friend was very envious. If his own child was as smart as her and could attract so many customers, he would be laughing in his dreams.

"Brother, you have a total of twelve dollars and eighty-seven cents."

"Uncle, my dad has packed your things. Please take good care of yourself."

"Don't push! Don't push!"

"Oops, someone stepped on my foot."

Seeing the growing crowd, Xia Jianguo could only shout to maintain order, "Everyone, don't push. There's plenty of stock today, and everyone can buy what they need. My daughter will also be here."

There are many people buying things today, so there are even more onlookers. If you speak softly, you won't be able to hear anything.

"This is the legendary genius? He looks no different from an ordinary person!"

"He looks like an ordinary person, but you didn't see that he's better at math than you."
