Chapter 1 Rebirth and Blind Date
"Weiwei, what are you thinking? He's been gone for two years. Do you still want to stay by his side forever?"
"Even if you don't think about yourself, you should at least think about Lulu, right?"
Ji Wei felt a splitting headache, and the sharp sound of the truck still echoed in her ears. No, where was she? She rubbed her aching head, and the last memory she had was of being pushed away by Gu Chen'an, and that loud thud.
"Weiwei, are you even listening to me?" The familiar yet unfamiliar voice carried a hint of anger.
Ji Wei slowly turned her head to look at the person who spoke, then her eyes widened in surprise: "Mom!"
Zhou Xiuzhen sneered and said in a tough tone, "Since you still know I'm your mother, you have to go to the blind date tonight, whether you like it or not!"
"Blind date," Ji Wei muttered slowly, glancing at the much younger-looking person in front of her. She couldn't help but pinch her thigh, and the moment she felt the pain, a guess flashed through her mind: had she been reborn?
"Ji Wei, did you hear what I just said?" Seeing that she was distracted, Zhou Xiuzhen's anger was undisguised.
"I understand." Ji Wei felt a bit confused, but she also grasped the important information: she must have been reborn, so she needed to sort out the current situation on her own.
"Alright, since you've thought it through, I'll head back now." Seeing that she had agreed, Zhou Xiuzhen finally showed a satisfied expression. After taking a few steps, she couldn't help but turn back and remind her, "Don't worry, your Aunt Wang specifically inquired about him. That Xiao Gu is a very nice person. He just transferred back from the army at the beginning of the year. If it weren't for my good relationship with your Aunt Wang, you wouldn't have gotten a chance!"
Zhou Xiuzhen rambled on and on, but Ji Wei didn't hear a word she said. Only after everyone left did she get up and look around at her surroundings. This should be her single dormitory room at school. She immediately noticed the calendar on the table; it was May 15, 1993. She reached out and touched the calendar. At that moment, she was absolutely certain that she had been reborn. Realizing this, her feelings became complicated.
Thinking about what happened before her rebirth, Ji Wei couldn't help but frown. She hadn't expected Gu Chen'an to risk his life to save her. Now that she was back, where was Gu Chen'an? Thinking of this question, Ji Wei suddenly remembered what Zhou Xiuzhen had said earlier: a blind date. If she remembered correctly, the "Little Gu" she mentioned should be Gu Chen'an's father.
This had happened before in her past life. Zhou Xiuzhen had dragged her to meet Xiao Gu, whom she described as having good prospects, only to discover upon arrival that he was the parent of one of her students. Although Xie Fei had been gone for over two years then, she wasn't ready to remarry. She was afraid of upsetting Lulu, and besides, the blind date was her student's father, so she refused without a second thought. She never expected to experience something like this again. For a moment, Ji Wei was troubled, until the bell rang, and she realized with a start that she had class soon.
Fortunately, she had her own class schedule in the dormitory. She quickly glanced at it; it was Saturday, and both afternoon classes were for the second-grade class. She scanned the desk in the dormitory; there were no textbooks or lesson plans on it, so she guessed that Zhou Xiuzhen had just dragged her directly from the office to the dormitory. Although the memory was somewhat distant, muscle memory had successfully led her into the office. Sure enough, there were textbooks on her desk, along with a stack of test papers. She was definitely not in a good state to teach, so she simply reached out and picked up the test papers.
We still have a single day off per week, and everyone is excited on Saturdays because the holiday is just around the corner. However, when the students in Class 2 of Grade 2 saw the test paper in Ji Wei's hand, the excitement in their eyes vanished instantly. Ji Wei pretended not to see it, cleared her throat, and then asked the students in the front row to pass the test paper down.
In less than five minutes, the only sound in the classroom was the rustling of writing. Ji Wei stood on the podium, her eyes seemingly scanning the room, but her thoughts had already wandered far away. She slowly brought herself back to reality. She was currently in charge of math for three second-grade classes and was also the homeroom teacher for Class 1. Xie Fei had been gone from her and her daughter for more than two years, and Lulu would soon be three years old.
In her past life, she initially refused to remarry, fearing she would mistreat Lulu. Later, she realized being single wasn't so bad and simply gave up on the idea of finding someone else. Lulu had been with her mother until she was three. Thinking of Zhou Xiuzhen, who had been frequently urging her to go on blind dates since last year, she couldn't help but smile bitterly. Why hadn't she realized in her past life that leaving Lulu with them had already caused dissatisfaction from her sister-in-law, even though she gave half her salary to her mother every month? She thought that perhaps the first rift between her and Lulu stemmed from her being a dependent. In her past life, she worked hard to give Lulu the best life, but forgot to ask if that was what Lulu wanted. Now that she had a second chance, she would definitely make up for the regrets of her past life.
Thinking of Lulu softened Ji Wei's heart, but it was quickly replaced by worry. Would Lulu be very sad to hear about her car accident? Although their relationship had become distant, Lulu would still be upset, wouldn't she? However, compared to these worries, the current situation was more troublesome. Should she go on her blind date tonight? And if she did, what should she do?
This incident was just a small episode in her past life. She only paid a little attention to Gu Chen'an because he came from a single-parent family. She never expected that he would risk his life to save her twenty years later. Would he be like her? Thinking of this, she began to look forward to her blind date tonight.
There were only two classes on Saturday afternoon. Five minutes before the bell rang, students began to hand in their papers. When the bell rang, the classroom became restless, and everyone's eyes were filled with uncontrollable joy. Ji Wei couldn't help but smile too. Children's happiness is so simple.
It was a weekend holiday, and the homeroom teacher usually explained the holiday arrangements in advance. So when Ji Wei went to her classroom, only a few students who were cleaning were left. When they saw her, they all greeted her politely: "Hello, Teacher Ji!"
Ji Wei nodded to them and continued carrying the test papers back to the office. At this time, the other teachers in the office were still doing their final work at their desks. Thinking of Lulu who was still at her parents' house, Ji Wei quickened her pace and made a decision in her heart: this time, she would not leave Lulu at her parents' house anymore.
As people left the office one after another, Ji Wei glanced at the lesson plan in front of her. Twenty years ago, she was indeed very hardworking. The lesson plan for next week's class had already been prepared in advance, and she could relax a bit during this week's holiday.
She had promised Zhou Xiuzhen she would go on a blind date, and she guessed that Zhou Xiuzhen was waiting for her at home right now. Thinking that she could see Lulu soon, Ji Wei walked with lightning speed, and the journey that usually took fifteen minutes only took her ten minutes today.
The Ji family's house was a two-story self-built house. The front of the first floor was a storefront, where the elderly couple had opened a small shop a couple of years ago. They lived in the back. The second floor was where Ji Wei's younger brother, Ji Shengzhou, and his family of three lived. In other words, they hadn't considered her when the house was built. However, these things no longer affected Ji Wei, who had been given a second chance at life. She quickened her pace and immediately saw the busy Zhou Xiuzhen and Lulu sitting obediently on a stool. The little girl seemed to sense her gaze, and as soon as she looked up and saw her, she stood up and rushed towards her, sweetly calling, "Mommy, Mommy!"
Thinking of her daughter's distant gaze later, Ji Wei's eyes welled up with tears. She quickly squatted down, opened her arms, and caught the "little cannonball" rushing towards her. She hugged her tightly, and the little one wrapped her arms tightly around her neck, looked up at her, and said in a clear voice, "Mommy, you're finally back!"
"Yes, Mom is back." Ji Wei said, patting her head and then kissing her forehead.
Seeing this, Zhou Xiuzhen, who had finished her work, couldn't help but laugh and said, "You two are acting like you haven't seen each other in ages. Weiwei, hurry up and get ready, your Aunt Wang will be here soon."
"I understand." Ji Wei nodded, got up and went to her room to change her clothes. Lulu kept grabbing her clothes and following behind her. When Zhou Xiuzhen saw this, she asked her to come over. Ji Wei picked up the child directly: "No need, she will come with me later."
"What are you taking her for?" Zhou Xiuzhen asked, her face full of disapproval.
"We need to let Lulu see if that person is someone she likes. Don't worry, no matter how the blind date goes, Lulu won't bother you anymore." After saying that, Ji Wei picked up the child and left, leaving Zhou Xiuzhen's voice behind her: "What are you saying?"
Ji Wei closed the door to block out her voice. She looked down at her daughter in her arms and asked softly, "Lulu, is it okay if you live with Mommy at school every day from now on?"
The little one in my arms lit up at the words and nodded eagerly, "I want to live with Mommy, I want to live with Mommy."
“Okay, then live with Mom.” Seeing the joy on her face, Ji Wei also raised her eyebrows.
Zhou Xiuzhen, standing outside the door, frowned as she stared at the suddenly closed door. Ji Wei seemed different today, and what did she mean by what she just said? Had she overheard something? The mother and daughter who quickly emerged from the room interrupted her thoughts. Looking up, her brows furrowed even more: "Why didn't you change into something brighter?"
"Keep this outfit. Where are we supposed to meet?" Ji Wei had just changed out of her chalk-dust-stained striped shirt when she came into the room.
"Your Aunt Wang will come and take you there later." Zhou Xiuzhen tried to get her to change her clothes again and to leave Lulu at home, but Ji Wei refused. In the end, she glared at Ji Wei angrily: "I think you're deliberately trying to mess this up. What kind of spell did Xie Fei cast on you to make you like this?"
Hearing Xie Fei's name from her again no longer stirred any ripples in Ji Wei's heart. She couldn't even remember what he looked like. In her past life, she didn't want to remarry, not because she had any deep feelings for Xie Fei, but because she was afraid that Lulu would be wronged, and she felt that marriage was nothing special. At least at this moment, she still felt that way.
Fortunately, Aunt Wang's arrival put an end to Zhou Xiuzhen's nagging. When she saw that Ji Wei was going to bring Lulu along, a fleeting emotion crossed Aunt Wang's eyes, and then she smiled and said, "It's good to bring Lulu along. Xiao Gu will also be bringing his child, so it's nice for everyone to meet together."
"Thank you for your help, Aunt Wang." Ji Wei nodded to her and then followed behind her.
The meeting place was a restaurant. When Aunt Wang led the mother and daughter there, the father and son were already there. Before she could speak, Gu Chen'an across from her had already stood up, his voice full of excitement: "Dad, it's Teacher Ji!"
Ji Wei met his gaze. His eyes were clear, filled with excitement at seeing her. At that moment, Ji Wei realized that Gu Chen'an from twenty years later had not returned with her.
