Night falls.
The 27th floor of Yintai Centre was brightly lit. Qin Shu was leading a group of tech-savvy men, working to overcome technical challenges.
In the president's office next door, Huo Yunchao and Gu Fan were both present, along with a stranger in his thirties. He was Zhang Duo, a senior client manager at the private bank.
“Each year, set aside 3% of the profits from the tidal bore season to establish a trust fund account, with Miss Xue Qiandai listed as the beneficiary. The conditions for activating this fund are: first, my authorization; second, if—and I mean if—I don't have the conditions to activate it, Senior Brother Gu and Senior Brother Zhang will follow the procedures to hand over the fund to Dai Dai so that it can be used to its fullest potential. OK, any other questions?”
Huo Yunchao lit a cigarette, paced back and forth, and arranged the distribution of a huge sum of money as if making a will.
The two men exchanged bewildered glances. Gu Fan was somewhat better off, having already learned about Xue Qiandai's situation. Zhang Duo, however, had always assumed Huo Yunchao was a bachelor, never expecting him to be keeping a mistress and willing to give his wealth to her without hesitation.
"Junior Brother Huo, after you drafted this contract, I, a staunch advocate of not getting married, finally believe in love again."
As the smoke curled upwards, Huo Yunchao flicked off the ash. "There's nothing I can do. She won't swipe my card, so I have to give her something."
Their public display of affection is beyond words. That's an extremely large sum of money.
Zhang Duo pulled his legs back, stood up, and said, "Alright, I'll leave first. You guys can continue chatting."
After seeing Zhang Duo off, Huo Yunchao returned to his office and poured Gu Fan another cup of tea. "Senior Brother Gu, you seem to be holding back a lot of questions. Just ask whatever you want."
Gu Fan smiled bitterly, feeling that even the tea had turned bitter. "Junior brother, do you really trust that girl that much, giving her everything you have? This world is full of temptations, aren't you afraid of losing both your money and your heart?"
Huo Yunchao tilted his head and thought about it seriously, "Don't even mention giving her my heart, I'd give her my life. Besides, there aren't many things in this world that can tempt Dai Dai. Think about her family, her vision and knowledge. The only thing that can tempt her is probably myself."
What a confident statement.
Ultimately, Huo Yunchao dared to do this not only because he trusted Xue Qiandai, but also because he was confident.
We can't have a pleasant conversation anymore.
The single lawyer felt like he had been hit with a billion points of damage.
Gu Fan: "But now, the Xue family has collapsed!"
Huo Yunchao answered almost with certainty: "It will rise again under her leadership. Believe me, it's only a matter of time."
Gu Fan didn't know what to say next.
Getting back to the main topic, Huo Yunchao asked, "Senior brother, didn't you say you wanted to talk about the club incident? How's the investigation going?"
Gu Fan took out several photos from his bag, placed them on the coffee table, and pointed at them. "The situation is very unfavorable for us. Youyue Club fired the tea-delivering waiter, and on his way home, the waiter was involved in a car accident. The traffic police's video footage shows it was an accident, and the perpetrator fled the scene. But based on my experience, I simply don't believe it."
Even if Gu Fan didn't believe it, Huo Yunchao didn't believe it either. Everything happened too coincidentally.
Huo Yunchao frowned; the situation was more complicated than he had imagined. "So, if we want to investigate further, we can only start with the club's upper management? Surely we can get a list of people who were present on Wednesday."
"The club needs to protect the privacy of its clients, and there are big fish behind the club."
"Big fish" is slang for someone with powerful connections or influence.
"Speaking of which, you're almost forcing me, a lawyer, to become a detective," Gu Fan joked.
Huo Yunchao narrowed his eyes, a glint of shrewdness flashing within them. "Since they don't follow the rules, then I don't need to follow them either." Hacking into the club's internal surveillance system wasn't exactly difficult.
Gu Fan was startled. Only now did he realize that the person in front of him was a once-in-a-century technical genius from Tsinghua University. If he really wanted to use some extraordinary means, he could probably take him down without lifting a finger. "Yun Chao, you should be careful. After all, this is against the rules."
Huo Yunchao smiled calmly: "Rules are made for those who abide by them. If everyone disregards them, why should I follow them?"
Gu Fan was speechless. He changed the subject, "The police invited Yu Xue for tea. Our fellow villager is quite shrewd; she didn't confess anything and easily dodged the question. As for blackmailing you, she only said it was a joke. She likes you so much, how could she do that? Oh, by the way, she confessed to you on the spot, and the people interrogating her are said to be furious."
Huo Yunchao tapped the side of his cup and pondered for a moment, "We need to get the police to send people to protect her. Once she's in the police station, Gao Ruhai will definitely not trust her anymore, and the mastermind behind the scenes will probably also take action against her."
Gu Fan's eyelids twitched as he listened. He knew that Huo Yunchao was always regarded as a young talent and a gentle and refined businessman. But after witnessing everything he did, his seasoned business acumen and decisive strategic decisions made him someone to be respected but kept at a distance.
"Yun Chao, I really want to know what your feelings are for Yu Xue. Of course, I'm just curious, you don't have to answer."
The cigarette was finished, the tea was empty, and Huo Yunchao said quietly, "She was my mother's favorite student. I could have gotten along with her peacefully, and even helped her out where I could. But she shouldn't have made a move on Dai Dai. That alone is unforgivable."
Ultimately, the root of the problem lies with Xue Qiandai.
"Yun Chao, just how much do you love Xue Qiandai? She's already your Achilles' heel," Gu Fan sighed.
“It’s armor too.” Huo Yunchao’s lips curled up. Thinking of Dai Dai, his eyes softened considerably, and his previous fierceness dissipated. “The current evidence is not enough to convict Gao Qiang, especially since it was an attempted assault. But he will have to pay a price eventually. Let the Gao father and son suffer a bit first.”
