Chapter 37 Heartache

Chapter 37 Heartache

Along the way, Xie drove as fast as he could, getting to the station at top speed.

After parking his car, he practically ran into the police station, grabbed a uniformed officer, and eagerly asked, "Hello, I'm looking for Pu Xia. You called us over earlier, where is she now?"

Even the police officers, who were used to all kinds of situations, were taken aback by his aggressive demeanor and were speechless for a moment.

Seeing this, Pu Manli immediately pushed Xie Sheng aside.

"Hello, officer, I'm Pu Xia's aunt. You called us earlier and asked us to come over. Where is she now? What happened to her?"

"Oh! You're Pu Xia's guardian, right? Please come with me." The police officer finally realized what was going on and led Pu Manli and Xie Sheng upstairs.

During this time, she glanced at Xie Sheng out of the corner of her eye, subconsciously recalling whether she had caught him.

Xie Sheng's heart was pounding, so fast it felt like it was about to leap out of his body. A series of uneasy speculations raced through his mind, filling him with dread. However, all of this calmed down when he saw Pu Xia sitting quietly on the bench with her head bowed.

Apart from Pu Xia's figure, everything around her became a blurry silhouette and background. Xie Sheng bypassed everyone and ran straight towards her.

When he got closer, his heart clenched.

Pu Xia's fair face was red and swollen, and there was blood under his nose. His arms, which were exposed to the air, were also covered with bruises.

His heart was broken.

Xie Sheng knelt on one knee in front of Pu Xia, gently touching her face with his hand. His eyes instantly reddened, and even his voice trembled.

"Xiaxia, my baby, does it hurt? I'm sorry, I didn't protect you well, I'm so sorry."

At that moment, feelings of regret and hatred instantly filled every cell in his body.

He should have stayed by her side, protecting her and closely monitoring her every move. If he hadn't been so careless, she wouldn't have been in such danger!

Seeing Xie Sheng's body heaving with heavy breathing, Pu Xia immediately reassured him, "Brother, I'm fine, these are just superficial injuries."

The girl's gaze was clear and gentle, and Xie Sheng used great willpower to suppress the urge to kiss her.

But this impulse urgently needs to be released.

Xie Sheng locked his gaze on what was behind him, where a row of people were sitting slumped over, their condition no better than Pu Xia's, and perhaps even worse.

He quickly spotted a familiar face inside.

Like an enraged lion pride leader, a suffocating pressure emanated from him.

He walked up to Qingling and punched her hard in the wall next to her face.

Qingling shuddered in fright. She looked at Xie Sheng in panic, never imagining that one day he would look at her with such hatred and disgust.

Xie Sheng made no attempt to hide his anger; his once alluring eyes now held a sharp glint, like a deadly scythe, dangerous and dark.

"You'd better be prepared."

Qingling couldn't hold on any longer.

The man she had liked for so long was looking at her so seriously for the first time, and it was for another girl!

"Brother Sheng, you can't blame me entirely! She shamelessly seduced you first, and you actually did it for that slut..."

But before she could finish speaking, Xie Sheng grabbed her by the neck and slammed her against the wall.

Immediately, the scene descended into chaos once again.

"Let go! This is a police station! Do you want to be detained?!"

"Ah Sheng, what are you doing!"

"Xie Sheng! Let go!"

......

Xie Sheng's mind was pounding, all other sounds were blocked out and became background noise. At this moment, all he wanted was to repay Qing Ling for the injuries Pu Xia had suffered, hundreds and thousands of times over.

His body was as solid as a rock, and even the several people around him couldn't pull him away. Just as Qingling's face was growing increasingly red from lack of oxygen, a clear voice rang out from behind him, bringing him back to his senses.

"Brother, let go."

Xie Sheng's expression cleared up a bit, and his grip loosened. At that moment, several policemen immediately surrounded him, grabbed his hands, and shoved him to the ground. "Behave yourself! You dare to lay a hand on me in front of us?!"

Xie Sheng didn't struggle; his dark eyes were fixed on the terrified Qingling, sending chills down one's spine.

Pu Manli wiped away her tears, apologizing and saying nice things, she was extremely anxious.

In the end, the police station, considering that they were the victims and also fearing that Xie Sheng might cause more trouble if he stayed any longer, let them take Pu Xia back first.

It wasn't until they were all gone that Qingling came to her senses. Sensing something was wrong, she immediately grabbed one of the police officers guarding them and asked, "Why were they allowed to leave?"

"If anyone from your family comes, you can leave. If no one comes, you'll have to stay here obediently for three days."

Qingling was incredulous and instinctively denied it, shaking her head and shouting, "They're family? How could that be! You must have made a mistake!"

......

After leaving the police station, Xie drove directly to the hospital.

Although Pu Xia repeatedly emphasized that she was fine, Xie Sheng wouldn't listen to anything at this moment. He seemed determined to get a full checkup.

So, Pu Xia was dragged along to have a CT scan and an MRI, as well as some tests that other doctors felt were unnecessary.

Pu Manli followed the two up and down the stairs, and the questions she hadn't had time to think about before surfaced in the waiting time—

When did Xie Sheng and Pu Xia become so close?

Looking at the two of them, whose auras were almost intertwined, Pu Manli felt uneasy.

After all the tests were completed, it was already 9 p.m. Fortunately, Pu Xia was not in any health problems, which relieved both of them.

However, Xie Sheng's tightly furrowed brows remained furrowed.

That night, Pu Xia did not return to the dormitory, but went home with them.

After entering the room, Pu Manli wanted to say something more, but seeing Xie Sheng's somber expression, she suddenly didn't know where to begin.

It's a good thing that the relationship between the two has improved, but she doesn't know why she feels uneasy or where the worries that are weighing on her mind come from.

-

In the stillness of the night, the pale moon hangs in the cloudless sky, appearing even more desolate and quiet.

Perhaps it was because winter was approaching, but the moonlight illuminating the ground had a cold chill, shining through the window and into the room.

Pu Xia sat on the edge of the bed, quietly watching Xie Sheng, who was leaning against the foot of the bed smoking.

Her pale skin was almost transparent in the moonlight, and her long, silvery-gray hair cascaded down her slender back onto the bed.

She was ethereal and beautiful, and if it weren't for the glaring scars, one would almost have the illusion that she didn't belong to this world.

From the moment he entered, Xie Sheng's gaze never left her, but he didn't say a single word to her.

There was only silence, silence amidst the swirling smoke.

"Brother, come and hug me," Pu Xia said softly. She knew he was angry, but if she could do it all over again, she would still make the same choice.

So she couldn't offer any promises, she could only try to ease his pain through her actions.

Xie Sheng, cigarette between his fingers, propped himself up on his knees and stood up. He walked to Pu Xia and embraced her. Pu Xia immediately wrapped her arms around his neck even tighter, responding with an even more passionate hug—pressing herself tightly against his body.

Fish are born knowing how to breathe in water.

Birds are born to belong to the sky.

These are all natural phenomena, instinctive reactions of fish and birds.

And they, as soon as their skin touches, want to kiss, make love, and crave a closer union.

This is also an instinctive reaction, but it's strange that it can't be considered a natural phenomenon.

Pu Xia tilted her head back, her slender neck stretching upwards, and she inhaled the tobacco scent emanating from Xie Sheng's body, lost in thought.

Like animals licking each other to heal their wounds.

Xie Sheng's kisses fell softly and tenderly on her body.

His lips gently pressed against her wound, eventually returning to her lips and teeth.

His movements were gentler than ever before, but all Pu Xia wanted to say was that she wasn't as fragile as he thought.

So she took the initiative and bit his lips hard until the taste of blood spread. Xie Sheng simply let Pu Xia kiss him almost tearing at him and act roughly, even bending down to make it easier for her.

“Brother…” Pu Xia mumbled.

"Does the wound still hurt?"

Upon hearing her voice, Xie Sheng immediately sat up and looked down at her. Her features, sharp as if carved by a knife, were half hidden in darkness and half illuminated by the moonlight.

Pu Xia looked at his dark eyes and bright red lips, her gaze wandering, as if playing a game, searching for any resemblance between him and her.

“It doesn’t hurt, brother,” Pu Xia said, her eyes suddenly lighting up as if she had remembered something. “Let’s go to the provincial capital this weekend. I remember Dad has a house there where he lives.”

After a long pause, Xie Sheng finally responded to her.

"good."
