Chapter 244 It’s not sympathy, it’s love!
Mo Chenfeng actually didn’t have a lot to pack.
But he knew very well that he could not stay there any longer. Ning Zhi was meticulous and the longer he stayed with her, the more likely he would be exposed.
He returned to the room, took out his cell phone and checked the surveillance camera in the living room on the first floor.
Ning Zhi in the video was like a fragile porcelain doll, looking out the window with unfocused eyes and a slightly furrowed brow.
Mo Chenfeng looked at his wife's appearance, and his heart felt like it was being grabbed by a big hand.
In the end, he didn't have the courage to read any further. He switched the phone interface, hovered his fingertips over the address book, and dialed the number of Ning Zhi's attending physician.
The sun was rising outside the window, and the early morning sunlight stretched his shadow very long, casting it lonely on the empty wall.
"Has the madam's medical report come out yet?"
The rustling of papers came from the other end of the line, and the doctor's voice deepened. "It's out. The depression hasn't improved and is actually getting worse."
"Did you fail to take the medicine on time these days, or is your wife in a bad mood?"
"She takes the medicine on time every day. I watch her take it. But..." Mo Chenfeng's voice was filled with helplessness and heartache, "She has always been in a bad mood."
He pressed his knuckles against his brow, pressing until they turned white. Sometimes he really didn't know what to do.
"My wife is now suffering from severe depression. What she needs is the companionship and understanding of her family..."
The doctor said a lot, and Mo Chenfeng remembered it all.
The phone screen dimmed and then brightened again. He opened the encrypted album, which was full of Ning Zhi's photos.
There are the shadows cast by her eyelashes when she bent down to arrange flowers, the blanket that slipped off when she curled up on the sofa to read, and the profile of her face as she secretly wiped tears in the candlelight on her birthday.
But those photos were taken several years ago. In recent years, she has become increasingly reluctant to have her photo taken.
Mo Chenfeng stared at the photo on the phone screen, his fingertips gently stroking Ning Zhi's profile.
The doctor's words echoed in his mind, like a dull knife, slowly cutting his heart.
He suddenly stood up and walked quickly to the door.
Mo Chenfeng knew that he couldn't leave her here alone, he had to take her with him.
Even if Yun Zheng doesn't see them or recognize them, it will bring harm to Ning Zhi.
Those are all things of the past. There is no point in worrying about things that haven't happened.
And this has always been a thorn in Ning Zhi's heart, and it must be removed.
In the living room, Ning Zhi still maintained the same posture, her pure white skirt scattered on the ground, and the breeze outside the window gently brushed her hair.
She is like a gardenia that is about to wither, so pure and beautiful that it makes people feel distressed.
Hearing footsteps, she turned her head slightly and looked at him with empty eyes.
"Zhizhi." Mo Chenfeng squatted down in front of her, gently held her cold hand, and pulled her into his arms. "Come with me to the capital."
Ning Zhi's pupils suddenly contracted, as if they were pricked by something.
She pulled her hand back, her voice so soft that it was almost inaudible, "No, you go alone."
"You need a change of scenery, and the doctor also recommended..."
"I said I'm not going!" Ning Zhi suddenly raised her voice, her fingers unconsciously tugging at the corner of her clothes. "You know... you know everything!"
"We can go anywhere, but not to the capital." Ning Zhi's aggrieved voice gradually weakened.
Mo Chenfeng's heart sank.
Of course he knew that Yun Zheng was lost in a hospital in Beijing 20 years ago, and since then Beijing had become a place Ning Zhi never wanted to set foot in her life.
"Zhizhi..." Mo Chenfeng held her hand tightly, his low voice trembling a little, "We have to go out for a walk, don't we?"
"You can go anywhere, but not there!" Ning Zhi pushed him away, her weak tone full of determination.
Mo Chenfeng felt like something was blocking his throat.
He reached out to hug her, but she dodged him.
Ning Zhi curled up in the corner of the sofa, her voice trembling, "Every street and every corner in the capital makes me feel...I feel like she might be somewhere, but I can't find her."
The sun has risen, and the warm sunlight has filled the entire living room, but it cannot take away the haze in Ning Zhi's heart.
Mo Chenfeng looked at his wife's thin figure, and his chest ached so much that he could hardly breathe.
"I'm sorry," he whispered finally, "I wasn't thoughtful enough."
Ning Zhi shook her head and closed her eyes tiredly, "If you want to go on a business trip, go ahead. I can be alone at home."
These words were like a sharp blade, piercing straight into Mo Chenfeng's heart.
He froze in place, watching tears fall from Ning Zhi's tightly closed eyes.
"I'll stay with you." Seeing that she wasn't in a good state, he suddenly changed his mind and said, "The business trip can be postponed..."
"You don't have to be like this." Ning Zhi interrupted him, her voice frighteningly calm. "I don't need sympathy."
"It's not sympathy!" Mo Chenfeng eagerly grabbed her hand, "It's because I love you. I can't rest without you."
A flicker of fluctuation flashed across Ning Zhi's eyes, but soon returned to silence.
She pulled her hand away and slowly stood up. "You go to the capital. I want to be alone for a while."
Mo Chenfeng stood there, watching her thin figure disappear around the corner of the stairs.
He was instantly caught in a dilemma. On one side was his daughter who had been lost for many years and on the other was his sick wife.
He sat on the sofa and rubbed his eyebrows tiredly.
In fact, he had thought of a perfect solution, but he knew in his heart that he could not afford to take the risk.
He wasn't sure if it was time to tell Ning Zhi that their child had been found.
Will her emotional excitement be detrimental to her condition?
The risk was too great, and Mo Chenfeng knew he couldn't afford it.
But keeping it a secret from her is not a solution.
Mo Chenfeng sat alone on the sofa, thinking for a while, holding the phone tightly in his hand. After a long time, he made up his mind to call his son.
Mo Shian on the other end of the phone answered almost immediately, and his deep voice came through the receiver, "Dad, what's wrong?"
"Shi'an, let's postpone the trip to the capital. Your mother's condition isn't very good, and she refuses to go with us, so I have to stay with her."
Mo Chenfeng's decision was naturally made after careful consideration. He could not afford to gamble and did not dare to gamble.
Mo Shi'an was silent for a moment before continuing, "Dad, then you stay here with Mom. I'll go to the capital to find my sister first."
Mo Chenfeng's fingers gripping the phone tightened slightly, and his son's suggestion caused him to fall into a brief silence.
"Dad?" Mo Shi'an's voice came again, "I will be careful and will never meet her rashly like I did this time. I will first confirm her situation and then decide what to do next."
Mo Chenfeng closed his eyes and finally whispered, "Okay, but you have to promise me not to provoke her and not let her notice anything."
"I understand." Mo Shi'an's voice was steady and firm. "As for Mom...please spend more time with her."
After hanging up the phone, Mo Chenfeng slowly exhaled and looked up at the closed door on the second floor.
Ning Zhi hasn't left that door for a long time. She locked herself inside like an isolated island, refusing anyone to approach her.
He stood up, went to the kitchen, heated a cup of milk and added a spoonful of honey.
Ning Zhi used to like drinking this way the most.
He knocked gently on the bedroom door, but there was no response.
"Zhizhi, I'm coming in." He whispered and pushed open the door.
There was only a dim desk lamp on in the room. Ning Zhi curled up on the bed with her back to the door. Her thin shoulders looked particularly fragile under the light.
Mo Chenfeng walked to the bed, put the honey water on the bedside table, and reached out to gently stroke her long hair.
"Have some honey water." His voice was gentle, almost cautious.
Ning Zhi didn't move, just shook her head slightly.
Mo Chenfeng sat on the bedside, silent for a while, and finally spoke, "Zhizhi, let's talk, okay?"
Ning Zhi's shoulders stiffened slightly, but she still didn't turn around.
