Chapter 287 It’s over, I’m in love!
Jiang Chenyu's fingertips tapped unconsciously on the edge of the phone. The chat history on the screen seemed to be warm, burning his fingertips.
The rustling sound of leaves in the evening breeze outside the window was particularly clear in the quiet room.
Yun Zheng's question just now appeared in his mind again, hitting the softest spot in his heart accurately.
When he blurted out "It's not interest, it's liking," even he was stunned.
He didn't know what love was, but what came out of his mouth was love. Perhaps this was the truest thought in his heart.
Jiang Chenyu looked down at the last emoticon sent by Cen Lian on the phone screen. The grinning Shiba Inu seemed to be silently laughing at his nervousness.
"It seems that our Young Master Jiang is serious this time?" Fu Linghe's voice came from the wine cabinet.
His long fingers skimmed across the rows of bottles, finally picking out a bottle of whiskey.
The amber liquid sparkled alluringly under the light and made a crisp sound when poured into the glass.
Jiang Chenyu took the wine glass, and the cold wall of the glass touched his hot palm.
"Boss, when have you ever seen me not serious?" He tilted his head back and took a sip. The spicy taste of alcohol slid down his throat, but it couldn't suppress the restlessness in his heart.
As Jiang Chenyu's Adam's apple rolled up and down, he caught a glimpse of Yun Zheng's thoughtful gaze out of the corner of his eye.
Yun Zheng took a sip of wine and narrowed her eyes slightly.
"An'an is my best friend," she said softly but with an undeniable firmness. "I don't want her to get hurt."
She paused, tapping the glass lightly with her fingertips. "If you're just having a passing interest in her, please stop here."
"I'm not." Jiang Chenyu interrupted her, his voice low and firm.
As he put down his wine glass, his metal cufflinks made a crisp sound on the marble coffee table.
"From the first time I saw her, I..." His Adam's apple rolled again, and the unfinished words turned into a snort. "Forget it, saying these things is too corny. Anyway, I really mean it."
"Sister-in-law, I want to date her with the intention of getting married, not to be a hooligan."
Yun Zheng was silent for a moment, looking at him for a long time.
The warm light from the floor lamp reflected on her delicate profile, casting a small shadow.
"Doctor Jiang," she finally spoke, her voice tentative, "Are you tired of your family urging you to get married and want to find a woman to marry to satisfy them?"
Upon hearing this, Jiang Chenyu frowned slightly, and a hint of helplessness flashed in his eyes.
His slender fingers gently stroked the rim of the cup, his voice low and serious, "Sister-in-law, do you think I am that kind of person?"
Fu Linghe chuckled and put his arms on the back of the sofa.
"Zheng Zheng." He said lazily, "If Jiang Chenyu really wanted to marry someone casually, given his conditions, he would have been swarmed by wealthy women long ago."
"Yeah," Jiang Chenyu pulled the corner of his mouth, a hint of self-mockery in his eyes, "If I really want to deal with my family, can't I just find a marriage partner of equal status?"
"But marriage is not a joke. I have to be responsible to the girl and myself. I want to find someone I like and who likes me, and we can go together."
His eyes unconsciously fell on the screen of his mobile phone, and Cen Lian'an's portrait was still in the dialog box.
The words were spoken softly, but they sounded like a thunderclap in the air.
"I know my truest thoughts. I can be sure that I like her. Although I don't know whether she likes me or not, I don't think this will stop me from pursuing her."
He looked up at Yun Zheng and said sincerely, "But don't worry, sister-in-law. If she doesn't like me, I will definitely not pester her and cause her trouble."
Yun Zheng was stunned for a moment, her eyes softening slightly.
She lowered her head and took a sip of wine. When she looked up again, her tone had softened considerably. "Doctor Jiang, I'm not trying to be difficult with you. It's just... An An looks carefree, but she's actually very thoughtful and sensitive."
Jiang Chenyu lowered his eyes and remained silent for a moment, rubbing his knuckles against his brow twice, "I know."
He responded softly, his voice softer than ever before, the aftertaste of whiskey lingering bitterly in his throat.
Jiang Chenyu sat quietly on the sofa for a long time, picked up the glass and drank the remaining whiskey in it. "Okay, I won't disturb your world of two."
His gaze lingered on the couple for a moment, and he gently placed the glass in his hand on the coffee table. "I'm going upstairs to rest first. You should also go to bed early."
As the footsteps disappeared around the corner of the stairs, Yun Zheng looked at the somewhat lonely figure and suddenly chuckled, "It seems like your good brother is about to fall in love."
Fu Linghe turned the empty wine glass and smiled without saying a word, his eyes passing over his figure hurried upstairs.
In the bedroom on the second floor, the floor lamp casts a warm yellow glow in the night.
Jiang Chenyu kicked off his leather shoes and slumped down on the edge of the bed, his cell phone lighting up and then going out in his palm.
He stared at the jumping cursor on the screen, his thumb hovering over the keyboard again and again, and finally typed out only two words: "Good night."
The moment the send button was pressed, a hot and dry feeling suddenly rolled over my Adam's apple.
He placed his phone upside down next to his pillow in annoyance, rested the back of his neck against the cold headboard and closed his eyes to rest.
But the more he forced himself to empty his mind, the clearer Cen Lian'an's appearance became.
She always liked to tuck her hair behind her ears, but it kept slipping down. When she smiled, the corners of her eyes would wrinkle into little fans. Her bare feet left a trail of tiny footprints on the beach...
"Damn it." Jiang Chenyu cursed, picked up his phone and sat up straight.
The chat box was silent. Cen Lian'an's profile picture was a side profile photo of her. Every strand of his hair was shining in the sunlight.
He turned the lamp on the bedside table to the brightest setting, and the light and shadow cast a swaying outline on the white wall.
Jiang Chenyu took out the sketchbook from the drawer and the charcoal pencil moved rustlingly on the pages.
He had drawn countless anatomical drawings, but this was the first time he felt that the lines were so disobedient.
I tried to draw the dimples when she smiled, but the curve was always too steep. I tried to depict her eyelashes when she lowered her eyes, but the brushstrokes always seemed too heavy.
On the third piece of waste paper, Cen Lian'an's profile had been blurred, looking like a watercolor painting stained by rain.
Jiang Chenyu took out a mint candy from his windbreaker pocket. When he bit it, a cool feeling rushed to his nose, but it couldn't suppress the heat surging in his chest.
His phone suddenly vibrated, and he practically lunged over to grab the screen.
Cen Li-an replied with a yawning rabbit emoji, with a small caption: "Doctor Jiang, why are you still awake so late?"
He stared at the screen and chuckled, his fingertips tapping rapidly on the phone screen. "My heart has become aware of itself. I miss someone uncontrollably. I can't sleep because of it."
After sending it, I realized that this was too explicit. I was hesitating whether to withdraw it when a new message popped up on the other side: "Who are you thinking of?"
One second after it was sent, the message was quickly withdrawn, and then another message popped up quickly.
Cen Li'an: "Okay, it's getting late. Go get some rest quickly. You have to go to work tomorrow."
"Okay." He stared at the tilde at the end of the word, and suddenly felt his heart soften like a piece of marshmallow.
He turned to a new page in the sketchbook. This time, the charcoal pencil finally had some warmth when it fell to the paper, and every vivid expression of Cen Lian'an was vividly shown on the paper.
I don't know when it started to drizzle outside the window, and the raindrops hit the glass, making a crackling sound.
Jiang Chenyu stuffed the sketchbook into the deepest part of the bedside table, and his phone vibrated again when he lay down on the bed.
He held the phone to his chest, listening to the overlapping of his heartbeat and the soft ringing of the screen.
He remembered what Yun Zheng said about her "sensitivity" and the way Cen Lian collapsed in his arms when he was drunk.
"I'll let you know." He whispered into the darkness, his fingertips stroking the phone case.
I'm not just being infatuated with you on a whim, nor am I just trying to get you married. I really... want to have a future with you.
As the sound of rain grew heavier, he finally closed his eyes, and she appeared in his dream as he had wished.
