Chapter 314 Staying up late waiting for his news
Fu Linghe was about to speak when the flight attendant's respectful voice came from behind him, "Mr. Fu, your flight is now ready for boarding."
His expression instantly turned cold, and he nodded slightly, not even looking at the other person. He just replied lightly, "I know."
But when he turned his gaze back to Yun Zheng on the screen, the coldness between his brows melted instantly, and his voice was low and gentle, "Be good, I'm going to board the plane."
Yun Zheng stared at the handsome man's face in the video, her fingertips unconsciously tugging at the corner of his clothes. "Be sure to send me a message when you get off the plane, no matter how late it is!"
She paused, then emphasized, "Even if it's the wee hours of the morning, I'll wait for you."
Fu Linghe chuckled softly, stroking the screen with his fingertips. "Aren't you afraid of waking you up?"
"I set a special alert tone, and I can't sleep unless you land safely." Yun Zheng shook her phone, and the pearl pendant hanging on the screen swayed gently. "It won't wake you up."
The flight attendant approached again, but this time only dared to stand three steps away and bowed respectfully.
Fu Linghe frowned slightly, clearly displeased by the interruption, but when he looked at Yun Zheng, his expression softened. "I understand, Mrs. Fu."
He suddenly lowered his voice and said, "Remember to think of me."
"I know. I think of you every moment." Yun Zheng was telling the truth.
She really missed Fu Linghe, perhaps because she was used to the feeling of being together every day.
After hanging up the phone, Yun Zheng felt empty and uncomfortable.
She stared at her phone blankly for a long time, and the screen was still stuck on the prompt that their video call had ended.
The phone screen suddenly went dark, reflecting her slightly red eyes.
After hanging up the phone, Yun Zheng stared at the words "Call Ended" on the phone screen, feeling as if something was grabbing her chest.
She took a deep breath, her fingertips unconsciously stroking the edge of the phone. The moment the screen went dark, she saw her red eyes reflected on the black screen.
"I'm thinking like this just after we broke up..." Yun Zheng laughed at herself, but the corners of her mouth felt too heavy to lift.
She held the phone tightly against her chest, as if this could preserve the warmth of Fu Linghe in the video just now.
The sound of Shen Lanshu humming softly came from the living room, and Yun Zheng realized that she had been standing in the bathroom for too long.
She took a deep breath, adjusted her expression in front of the mirror, and made sure that there was nothing unusual before pushing the door open and leaving.
"Zheng Zheng, come and try the cookies I just baked." Shen Lanshu poked her head out from the kitchen, holding a plate of golden and crispy cookies in her hand.
She glanced sharply at her daughter-in-law's face and immediately frowned. "Why do you look so bad? Are you feeling unwell?"
Yun Zheng forced a smile, "It's okay, Mom. I'm probably just a little tired."
Shen Lanshu put down the plate and placed her warm palm on Yun Zheng's forehead. "You don't have a fever...but you look a little pale. Are you not used to Ling He just leaving?"
A glint of understanding flashed in her eyes. "Before he left on his business trip, the kid specifically told me to keep an eye on you."
When Yun Zheng heard her husband's name, her eyes became hot again.
She hurriedly lowered her head, pretending to straighten her clothes. "I...I want to rest for a while."
"Go ahead, go ahead. I'll call you when dinner is ready." Shen Lanshu didn't ask any more questions considerately, but just patted her shoulder gently. "Your room has been cleaned all the time, so just go over and rest."
Yun Zheng nodded gratefully and went upstairs almost as if escaping.
When I pushed open Fu Linghe's door, the familiar scent of cedar mixed with a hint of tobacco hit me in the face.
Yun Zheng stood at the door and took a deep breath, as if this could inhale all of Fu Linghe's scent into her lungs.
She closed the door gently, as if entering a secret space that belonged only to the two of them.
The bed was made meticulously, which was Fu Linghe's usual style.
Yun Zheng sat carefully on the edge of the bed, stroked the smooth sheets with her fingers, slowly lay down, and buried her face in the pillow.
The scent of Fu Linghe's shampoo still lingered there, fresh and gentle, just like him.
"How come we've only been apart for a few hours?" Yun Zheng muttered to herself, but she couldn't help but curl up her body and hug the man's pillow tightly, "Time passes so slowly..."
She closed her eyes and tried to recall the warmth of Fu Linghe's arms when he held her to sleep last night.
He ran his long fingers through her hair and whispered sweet nothings in her ear in a low voice.
Unconsciously, fatigue swept over Yun Zheng and her consciousness gradually became blurred.
Half asleep and half awake, she seemed to hear the ringing of her cell phone. She woke up suddenly and tried to grab the phone, but found that the screen was black.
It turned out to be just an illusion.
Outside the window, the afterglow of the setting sun has dyed half the sky red.
Yun Zheng turned over and buried her face deeper into the pillow, letting sleep drag her into darkness again.
"Zheng Zheng? Dinner is ready." A gentle knock on the door accompanied by Shen Lanshu's gentle voice woke Yun Zheng from her sleep.
She responded dazedly, but her first reaction was to reach for the phone on the bedside table.
The screen lights up, but there are no new messages.
Yun Zheng's heart sank. She looked at the time - 7:30 in the evening.
Fu Linghe's flight should not have landed yet, so it's still early.
She replied to Shen Lanshu mechanically, but her fingers kept refreshing the chat interface, for fear of missing any message.
When going downstairs, Yun Zheng's steps were a little unsteady.
In the restaurant, Shen Lanshu had already prepared the food, and the aroma was everywhere, but Yun Zheng had no appetite at all.
"Eat a little," Shen Lanshu poured her a bowl of soup. "That brat would be heartbroken if he knew you didn't eat properly because he was away."
Yun Zheng forced a smile, took the bowl of soup, but placed her cell phone in the most conspicuous place on the dining table.
She sipped the hot soup, but her eyes would glance at the phone screen every few seconds.
"When will he arrive?" Shen Lanshu picked up a piece of vegetables with chopsticks and put it into Yun Zheng's bowl.
"It's almost midnight anyway." Yun Zheng's voice was a little hoarse. "It's an international flight, and there's jet lag."
Shen Lanshu nodded in understanding, "Then you must wait for his news tonight?"
"Yeah." Yun Zheng's fingertips tapped lightly on the edge of the phone. "I told him to contact me as soon as he landed."
Yun Zheng ate absent-mindedly throughout the meal and barely touched a bite of the food.
After dinner, she helped Shen Lanshu clean up the dishes and couldn't wait to go back upstairs.
Shen Lanshu looked at her hurriedly leaving back and sighed softly.
After returning to Fu Linghe's room, Yun Zheng immediately threw herself onto the bed, holding the phone tightly in her hand.
She opened the chat history with Fu Linghe and scrolled through their previous conversations.
Every message was like a dose of comfort medicine, temporarily relieving her inner anxiety.
Time passed minute by minute, and the sky outside the window became completely dark.
Yun Zheng turned off the main lights, leaving only a dim bedside lamp on, and curled up on Fu Linghe's bed.
She turned on the TV and tuned it to a channel that was playing old movies. She turned the volume down very low just to have some background noise so that she wouldn't be too lonely.
Every few minutes, she would turn on her phone screen to check the time.
Eleven o'clock, midnight... Fu Linghe's flight should be landing soon.
Yun Zheng checked the flight status online and confirmed that the plane had entered a stable flight phase, and only then did she relax a little.
But the relaxation was short-lived.
As time went by, Yun Zheng became more and more restless.
She began to pace around the room, then returned to the bed, buried her face in Fu Linghe's pillow and took a deep breath.
At two o'clock in the morning, she finally couldn't help but send a message to Fu Linghe, "Are you almost there?"
Of course there was no reply, he was still on the plane.
Yun Zheng sat on the bed with her knees hugged, her eyes sore but not sleepy at all.
She opened the album and looked through the photos they had taken together.
In the photo, Fu Linghe was wearing a neat suit, and his eyes were so gentle that they could drip water when he looked at her.
Yun Zheng gently traced his outline on the screen with her fingertips, and a sweet pain arose in her chest.
At four o'clock in the morning, Yun Zheng's eyelids had begun to droop, but she stubbornly refused to fall asleep.
She set an alarm for five minutes to ensure that she would not accidentally oversleep and miss Fu Linghe's message.
Every time the alarm goes off, she reflexively grabs her phone to check it, then turns off the alarm in disappointment and waits for the next one.
At 4:50, her phone suddenly vibrated. Yun Zheng was so startled that she almost dropped it.
Fu Linghe's name appeared on the screen, along with a brief message: "Landed, everything went well."
Yun Zheng's fingers were shaking so much that she could barely type. She quickly replied, "Finally!"
Almost at the same time, the man's video call request popped up.
The moment the call was connected, Fu Linghe's handsome face appeared on the screen.
He looks a little tired, but in good spirits. The background is a corner of the airport.
"Zheng Zheng?" His voice came through the speaker, with a hint of surprise, "You haven't slept yet?"
Only then did Yun Zheng realize how terrible she looked. Her hair was messy, her eyes were red and swollen, and there were obvious bruises under her eyes.
She subconsciously wanted to tidy up her hair, but was pinned to the spot by Fu Linghe's next words.
His voice suddenly became low and distressed, "Have you been waiting for me?"
Yun Zheng suddenly couldn't control her tears.
She quickly wiped it away with the back of her hand, her voice so low it was barely audible. "I couldn't sleep without hearing from you."
Fu Linghe's expression turned serious. He found a quieter place and held the phone closer, as if wanting to see her more clearly. "It's all my fault. You should have rested."
"I set a special alert tone," Yun Zheng said stubbornly, "but it didn't go off, so I just kept looking at my phone..."
"Zheng Zheng," Fu Linghe's voice softened, filled with deep remorse, "I'm sorry to have made you worry like this. Next time I'll tell you the exact time in advance, or..."
"No, it's not your fault." Yun Zheng interrupted him hastily, "It's me... I just..."
She bit her lower lip, not knowing how to express this inexplicable anxiety.
Fu Linghe seemed to understand, his eyes became extremely gentle, "Worried about me?"
Yun Zheng nodded, tears welling up in her eyes again. "I miss you so much."
Fu Linghe on the other side of the screen took a deep breath, as if trying hard to control his emotions. "I miss you too, every minute and every second."
His voice was a little hoarse. "But right now, what I want most is for you to go to bed right away, okay?"
"Yeah." Yun Zheng responded obediently, but was reluctant to hang up the phone.
"I promise to contact you tomorrow as soon as I have time," Fu Linghe promised. "Now, close your eyes, put your phone next to your pillow, and let me watch you fall asleep."
Yun Zheng did as he said, leaning the phone against the bedside table and adjusting it to an angle where she could see her.
She crawled into bed and wrapped herself in Fu Linghe's quilt, finally feeling a long-lost sense of security.
"Go to sleep, Mrs. Fu." Fu Linghe's voice was like a gentle lullaby. "I'm here with you."
