Chapter 3 Negotiation

Mr. and Mrs. Cheng sat opposite Cheng Huaijin, facing each other in silence.

As usual, Cheng Woyu didn't attend the family meeting. Since awakening his powers, he rarely worried about such trivial matters; his only concern was beast taming. He was a very talented beast tamer, having entered the school team's reserve team in his first year of junior high. His parents had high hopes for him. At home, he only needed to make a request, and his parents would do their best to fulfill it.

Cheng's father asked, "Which school do you want to go to?"

……here we go.

Cheng Huaijin already had a plan in mind. She smiled, her eyes full of anticipation: "Dad, I want to try for the First Junior High School. Their supplementary admission standards are lower, I should be able to pass. Plus, I can apply for scholarships, which will save the family a lot of money. The school is also very close to us, I think..."

Cheng's father interrupted her: "What kind of scholarships can you apply for?"

Cheng Huaijin wasn't angry at her father for rudely interrupting her; instead, she smiled even more happily, looking every bit the obedient daughter.

You'd think she was very close to Cheng's father if you didn't know better.

The Cheng family is dominated by Cheng's father (Cheng Woyu doesn't participate), so Cheng Huaijin always pretends to be very obedient in front of Cheng's father.

The girl said softly, "I've checked. The maximum amount a freshman can apply for is a 70% tuition reduction. My academic grades are good, and my Grass Sprite level is not low either. I'm confident I can give it a try."

Upon hearing its name, the grass sprite's leaves swayed, and it looked at Cheng's father with an innocent and naive expression.

Looking into those innocent and pure eyes, and remembering his daughter's always obedient nature, Mr. Cheng suddenly realized that what his daughter said made a lot of sense. His daughter had always been sensible and had consistently achieved good grades; it was just a pity she didn't have the beast-taming talent of his son. If only…

"A 70% tuition reduction? Can you get it?" Cheng Woyu suddenly asked.

He walked out of the room, holding a water glass, his tone condescending: "Our school has the most students admitted through supplementary admissions every year because of its low cutoff scores." He looked at Cheng Huaijin, "Are you confident you can beat them?"

Cheng Huaijin was already mentally ready to give his younger brother a good beating, but on the surface he still had a bright smile.

She said confidently, "Of course!"

Nonsense! If you don't even believe in yourself, how can you expect others to? Momentum often determines success or failure!

Cheng Woyu, however, wasn't buying it. He scoffed, his gaze towards Cheng Huaijin cold: "Since you're so confident, why don't you just apply to Yaotian Junior High School for supplementary enrollment? The scholarships there are very high." He turned and went back into the house, leaving behind only a casual remark—

"The top-tier scholarship not only covers all tuition fees, but also includes a 100,000 yuan bonus."

Cheng Huaijin looked at him, her eyebrows curved and the corners of her mouth turned up; to anyone, she looked like a kind older sister.

She covered her mouth and laughed: "Little brother, if you couldn't get into Yaotian, how could I possibly get in?"

Cheng Woyu turned around abruptly, staring at Cheng Huaijin with eyes that seemed to want to devour her: "Are you so proud of awakening? The grass spirit is nothing but trash, I can crush it with one finger."

Cheng Huaijin looked up and met his fierce gaze directly, her face showing the tolerance of an older sister towards her troublemaking younger brother: "Hehe, stop joking, little brother."

She gently stroked the grass fairy's leaves reassuringly: "Don't listen to my brother's nonsense, he's a very kind child."

Cheng Woyu glanced at the grass sprite: "Keep your pet in check."

Grass-type Pokémon and Fire-type Flame Wolf are indeed type-counteracting, so Cheng Huaijin would favor the Grass-type Pokémon. It's just a little strange, though, that Cheng Woyu has always disliked his family seeing his pets, so he always keeps them stored in his wristband.

Why did he bring the Flame Wolf in today? Couldn't he put the Flame Wolf into his wrist mark? And why is that?

Pretending not to hear Cheng Woyu's threat to Cheng Huaijin, Cheng's father nodded and said, "Xiaoyu is right. Why don't you try going to Yaotian Junior High School? If it works out, we'll send you there."

Cheng Huaijin tacitly refrained from pursuing the matter further. However, the supplementary entrance exam for Yaotian Junior High School was too difficult, and she lacked confidence in passing it.

She clasped her hands together and said pitifully, "But Dad, Yaotian's exam is too difficult. I only just awakened today, I..."

"Alright, it's decided then. The Beast Taming School is quite expensive, and even if you enroll, it will cost a lot more for training and development. Your mother and I aren't very capable and can't earn a lot of money. It's already a bit of a struggle to support your younger brother."

Mr. Cheng frowned as he looked at Cheng Huaijin: "You've been sensible since you were little, and I believe you understand."

"...I don't understand, my foot!" Cheng Huaijin lowered his head, feigning sadness, concealing the coldness in his eyes.

He smiled kindly: "You awakened relatively late, and your contracted pet is also relatively weak. If you want to succeed, you'll need a lot of training resources. Your parents can't afford that much money, so you'll have to work hard yourself. If you win the Yaotian Scholarship, your parents won't give you a single penny; you can use it all yourself."

"Your life is your own; if you don't work hard, no one can help you."

Having said all that, Cheng Huaijin understood his father's unspoken meaning.

If you can get into Yaotian Junior High School and receive a scholarship, then go for it. If you don't receive a scholarship... we won't give you any money, so you'll have to figure it out yourself.

"dad……"

"That's settled then. Go back and rest."

Cheng Huaijin returned to his room dejectedly and closed the door.

She sat on the bed, no longer looking pitiful, and her expression was very serious.

"Grass."

-You're losing hair.

The grass sprite curled up a few strands of its head from the bed and sent them in front of Cheng Huaijin's eyes.

“…Damn it,” Cheng Huaijin took the dead hair and comforted himself, “…Thank you, Elf. It will grow back, don’t worry.”
