Chapter 16 Confusion

In the evening, Ji Yongxing, assistant to the deputy director of the institute, returned to his room after finishing his work. As usual, he locked the door and started to wash up.

When everything was ready, he dragged out a wooden box half the size of a person from under his bed, opened the meaningless lock on it, and revealed the densely packed electronic components inside.

After plugging the plug into the wall socket, the machine that Ji Yongxing assembled using scrap parts began to operate slowly with the flashing green light and the rotation of the fan.

He had looked up a lot of information from the old era and learned that people like him were called "junk men" a hundred years ago. He had no idea whether this name was a compliment or an insult. He only cared about the upcoming changes in his model.

Ji Yongxing is sixteen years old this year, and his personality can be perfectly summarized in two words - genius.

Ji Yongxing was born in the inner city. Both of his parents are senior researchers at the research institute, responsible for technology research and development and super power research respectively.

Although he did not awaken any abilities, he inherited the talents of his father and mother perfectly and showed an amazing talent for science since he was a child.

He became the assistant to the deputy director of the institute at the age of sixteen, and no one would be dissatisfied with this because the deputy director himself was another Ji Yongxing forty years ago.

For research institutes that adhere to science, it is meaningless to accumulate experience step by step. It is almost a consensus among everyone to give way to talented people. It is also one of the basic rules of the institute to promote mediocre people and demote them, because they believe that truth is the most fair judge, and incompetent fools will only lead research into a desperate situation from which there is no return and thus kill all mankind.

There are only three ways to influence the future of the people in Hope City: power, knowledge and individual strength.

And everyone who knows Ji Yongxing believes that he will master one of them perfectly in the future.

But only Ji Yongxing himself knew that he might be a little smarter than they thought.

Maybe more than a little.

The machine started up slowly, and the screen lit up slowly. The faint sound of electricity echoed in the not-so-spacious single dormitory. While updating the data, Ji Yongxing recalled the origin of this bulky thing.

Deputy Director Zhou Zhuo actually knew that he had violated the parts recycling discipline and had secretly brought some broken things back to the dormitory, but the old man had always believed in the idea that geniuses change the world, so instead of criticizing him, he took the initiative to help Ji Yongxing cover up.

The old man's only request was that he be the first to show Ji Yongxing's work. He claimed that it would be a moment to witness history.

But in fact, Ji Yongxing's experiment had been completed long ago. He didn't know whether anyone had done something similar before, but he built a model that could operate successfully in this broken machine.

It is a model that integrates all known information, calculates weights, and ultimately makes future deductions.

Due to computing power issues, Ji Yongxing’s current results can only draw final conclusions, and he cannot see the real-time process of the deduction.

As Ji Yongxing continued to input new known information over the past year, the range of conclusions drawn by the model became smaller and smaller. After he changed the parameter of "alien beasts can communicate and evolve" from the previous "high probability" to "certain", he started the model running again.

The air in the narrow room was a little hot, which was an inevitable result of the computer working, but it didn't take long before Ji Yongxing fell into a heat that was even worse than the computer.

After two hours of operation, a number appeared in front of Ji Yongxing -

"70-72"

This means that the model's deduction results show that humans will be able to hold on until the 70th to 72nd year of the new era.

What follows naturally is destruction.

"Closer again."

Ji Yongxing sat back in his chair and muttered quietly. The results of the model had been declining from nearly 200 at the beginning. As Ji Yongxing obtained and input more and more information, the hope of mankind seemed to be getting smaller and smaller...

This is also the reason why he has not submitted his research results yet. He has a hunch that if he submits this model, the resulting parameter changes will definitely bring the day of human doom closer again.

The deduction of doomsday was like a spiritual plague. Ji Yongxing dared not tell anyone about it, for fear that the plague would continue to spread among the crowd and lead to disastrous consequences.

However, even if I keep this secret forever, can humanity really be saved?

Has this losing war with the alien beasts lost its meaning?

And, is this cruel to those who firmly believe that humanity will win?

It should be noted that although Hope City has always been promoting the idea that strange beasts are extremely terrifying (which is indeed the case), the idea that at least humans will win has always been deeply rooted in people's minds.

Countless people are willing to endure their current lives because they believe that such days will not last forever.

Over the decades, countless soldiers with such faith have died on the city walls...

Ji Yongxing fell asleep in a chaotic state of mind. His last thought before he lost consciousness was:

"Take a day off tomorrow to go out and relax."

---

"Not feeling well?"

After hearing Ji Yongxing's application for leave, Zhou Zhuo, deputy director of the institute, raised his eyes from the microscope and looked at his closed disciple.

He is an expert in biology and is dedicated to deconstructing all discovered superpowers from a biological perspective.

Seeing the other party shaking his head, Zhou Zhuo immediately understood.

“It’s normal to encounter difficulties when doing research like this. Even if you are a genius, it doesn’t mean you won’t go astray, right?

"You'll be given two days to relax and don't forget to apply for a pistol for self-defense."

Ji Yongxing was hesitant to speak. His supervisor obviously attributed his depression to the obstacles encountered in his research, but he was unable to refute it.

That's fine.

Thinking so, Ji Yongxing took the leave note handed to him by the deputy director and went to find his parents to tell them about this.

But when he picked up the note in his hand, he was stunned. He saw that it was not a two-day leave, but a temporary appointment.

Ji Yongxing, the nominal senior investigator of the institute, will patrol the eastern wall of the outer city area which was hit by the beast tide three days ago.

The inspection included the extent of damage to the city walls, the concentrated learning of the observers, and interviews with those who survived the battle.

The total duration is two days, and at the end you are required to submit investigation records and a 3,000-word summary.

Ji Yongxing was stunned for a moment, and then quickly continued his journey.

In the eyes of the deputy director, such a short-term overseas investigation could be considered as a vacation, and Ji Yongxing had no objection to this. He just felt that the 3,000-word summary was a bit too many, and hoped that the content of the investigation could be more substantial so that he could fill it with less water.
