The first day's competition lasted from morning until almost evening. The 46 underage orcs were divided into winning and losing groups. The winning group would compete in the morning and the losing group in the afternoon.
What amazed Meng Yuqing was that they chose their opponents by drawing lots.
In a large stone bowl are 46 dice-sized wooden blocks, each with a different simple pattern engraved on one side.
There are five patterns: circle, triangle, horizontal line, cross line and fan.
There are 10 wooden blocks engraved with circular patterns, 5 of which are engraved with 1-5 circles, and the other five correspond to them.
One circle pairs with one circle, two circles pair with two circles, exactly 5 pairs.
The same goes for triangles, horizontal lines, and cross lines, which each have 5 pairs, and sectors, which have 3 pairs.
The orc who draws the lot needs to turn his back and put his hand into the stone bowl to draw a small wooden block. The one with the same pattern is his opponent.
This is how they chose their opponents in the first round.
When they drew lots for the second round of group competition, they picked out 12 pairs. The person who drew a single pattern would be given a bye. After their group finished competing, they would draw another opponent from the winner.
Then the winner of the losing group draws lots to fight with the loser of the winning group, and the winner fights with the previous winner of the winning group to decide the 11 people.
Finally, there is a draw for the competition. Those who are not awarded a spot will draw lots to challenge the winner after the competition. The five winners will determine their spots, and the remaining six will compete for five spots. After the final ten people are determined, others can challenge the ten of them once. Each person can only be challenged once, and once they hold their spot, no one else is allowed to challenge them again.
After understanding all the rules, Meng Yuqing was a little surprised. This was actually not much different from many modern competition systems. The orcs in this primitive world were much more intelligent than he had imagined.
After the losing and winning groups had drawn their lots, Xia announced the end of the first day's competition.
On the way home, Meng Yuqing said to Xuan with a lingering feeling, "This is the first time I've seen orcs fight like this. It's really exciting."
Xuan turned his head and looked at him. "This is just a fight between underage orcs. After the autumn hunt is over, the tribe will hold a larger fight with adult orcs participating. It will be even more exciting."
After saying that, Xuan lowered his eyes and hesitated a little. He stole a glance at Meng Yuqing and found that the other party still looked very excited and interested. He whispered, "I will also participate this year."
"Really? You'll be participating too?" Meng Yuqing looked at Xuan in surprise and said excitedly, "That's great. Don't worry, I'll definitely bring Lie, Mu, and the others to cheer you on."
"Yeah." Xuan lowered his head, the tips of his ears slightly red, "I will try my best."
After sending Meng Yuqing to the door of her home, Xuan was about to leave. As soon as he turned around, he found that someone had pulled his animal skin skirt. He looked back at Meng Yuqing with some confusion.
"What's wrong? Anything else?"
Meng Yuqing looked at him with a gossipy look on her face. "It's about Dong. What's going on between him and that lynx beastman? If it was just because the other party beat Dan, he wouldn't be so resentful towards him."
"Dong?" Xuan was stunned for a moment, then immediately realized, "He and Ya...eh~"
He sighed deeply, smiled helplessly, and said, "Ya was brought back by an orc from our tribe when he was ten years old. It was just winter then, and he wandered near our tribe and was caught stealing food from the Dongfu Beast. The Dongfu Beast saw that he was a little orc, very thin, and had injuries all over his body. He knew that he would never survive the winter alone outside, so he brought him back."
"Because he was very aggressive when we first brought him home, we didn't put him with the orcs who had lost their parents. Instead, we found him a separate house and let the orcs look after him."
"He was very resistant to us at the time. He wanted to run away as soon as he got the chance. Even when he was almost fainting from hunger, he refused to eat the food we offered him. He only ate the food he stole when no one else knew. He also wouldn't let the orcs get close to him. It took some effort for Dong's father to bring him back."
"Later, it was Dong's father who discovered that he would accept anything given by a sub-beast, and that he wouldn't be so resistant to orcs when a sub-beast was present. That's when we found a way to get along with him."
"Dong's father-in-law took pity on him and often visited him. He also told Dong to be friends with him and help him integrate into the tribe."
"Dong then stupidly ran up to him and said he wanted to be friends with him. He had just started to be less resistant to us, and he was about to pat him on the shoulder, but he dodged and ran away."
At this point, Xuan continued with a hint of amusement, "After being rejected, Dong came to me angrily and said a lot of bad things about him in front of me, and kept trying to encourage me to beat him up."
"Did you go there?" Meng Yuqing asked curiously.
Xuan nodded with an awkward expression on his face, and said sheepishly, "At the time, I thought he was the one who bullied Dong, so I went to find him. However, before we could even start a fight, my father-in-law found out and I got scolded."
"Puchi~" Meng Yuqing couldn't help laughing out loud, but when she saw Xuan's embarrassed expression, she immediately covered her mouth to suppress her laughter.
Xuan reached out and touched his ears, which were a little hot, and continued, "But Dong was even worse off. When his father-in-law found out, he had his father-beast drag him to Ya and beat him up right in front of him. Ya was so scared that he immediately went to stop his father-beast. He escaped, but because of this incident, Ya finally regarded our tribe as his own home."
"Hahahaha, this is also a good thing. But has Dong been holding a grudge against me for this for so long?" Meng Yuqing said with a smile.
