Chapter 6 Black Market Transactions

When I woke up again, it was already the next morning.

Xie Yuyao stretched lazily, rubbed her sore arms, and got up.

She changed into a newer white shirt and baggy military green pants, and pouted in dissatisfaction.

This outfit is hard to describe. Once the reform and opening up take place, she will definitely design and make some beautiful clothes.

There are books on clothing design and production in the space; I'll study them properly when I have time.

After brushing our teeth and washing our faces, we all sat down at the table to eat breakfast. Breakfast consisted of a pot of mixed rice porridge with pickled cabbage and sweet potatoes.

The mixed rice porridge had more soup than rice, but the sweet potatoes were fragrant and sweet, and quite delicious.

The older educated youth still have to go to work today, while Xie Yuyao and the other two have just arrived and have a day of free time to replenish their living supplies.

After the meal, the three of them decided to go to town together for a stroll.

Every Saturday, the production team sends an oxcart to town, and today happens to be Saturday.

The group arrived at the oxcart parking spot at the village entrance. Two elderly people were already sitting on the cart, with large baskets on their backs beside them.

After Xie Yuyao and the other two joined the group, the driver checked the sky and set off.

Xie Yuyao sat on the edge of the carriage, swinging her legs back and forth, and twirled around a wild chrysanthemum she had picked.

As she felt the morning breeze and gazed at the autumn scenery, she felt as if she had returned to modern times and was traveling in the countryside, enjoying the rural landscape.

Half an hour later, the oxcart stopped at the town entrance. The driver told them that the time to return to the production team was 3 p.m., and if they missed it, they would have to walk back.

Xie Yuyao's primary goal was to find the black market; if possible, she did not want to exchange hoarding goods for large sums of money and vouchers.

Don't say there are no surveillance cameras now; the eyes of the masses are discerning, and there will always be traces of what has been done.

However, the accommodation conditions at the educated youth institute were really poor. She needed a private room and also needed ration coupons to exchange for some living supplies.

Therefore, she decided to stop after exchanging for the necessary supplies, and that she could wait until the economic situation improved before making money.

She suggested going alone: "I want to wander around first, and then go back by myself later."

Ren Fei and Chen Kai didn't say anything, but after telling her to be careful, they split up into two groups.

Xie Yuyao strolled around the town for half an hour, and that was basically it.

The supply and marketing cooperative here is much smaller than the one in Beijing, consisting of only two rooms. It sells very few things, mainly grains, seasonings, and some daily necessities.

There was a state-run restaurant, but since she had already eaten breakfast, she didn't go in.

She went to the post office to check, and found that the original owner's book package had not arrived yet.

She arrived in the world too late; after breakfast, she went to the train station and only had time to ask the original owner's mother to mail her high school textbooks.

Logistics back then was nothing like it is today; express delivery can usually arrive within 3 days.

Her online space is filled with a collection of physical books and ebooks from various industries and fields, ensuring she has plenty to read. She mails the books to help her review for the college entrance exam.

I've searched all over town but still can't find the black market. Is there anything else I've missed?

While she was pondering, a bus pulled up by the roadside. Seeing the large characters on the bus that said it was going to the county town, she simply walked over.

Since we couldn't find it in town, let's try our luck in the county seat.

An hour later, Xie Yuyao stood by the roadside in the county town.

The county town looked much better than the town, with most of the houses being two-story brick buildings. There were many pedestrians on the road, including workers and students.

Xie Yuyao didn't look for crowded places like department stores, but went directly to a secluded alley. The county's black market should be in one of those alleys.

After walking for about an hour, we arrived at an alley near the hospital and saw several suspicious figures carrying baskets enter the alley. We finally found them!

Xie Yuyao didn't rush over. She cut a piece of floral fabric to use as a headscarf to cover her face before stepping in to test the waters.

Just as they reached the alley entrance, a tall, thin man jumped out and shouted sternly, "What are you doing here?"

Xie Yuyao was startled, thinking the other person was a law enforcement officer, but then the other person asked in a low voice, "Buy or sell?"

"I want to buy something." It turned out to be a lookout at the black market.

The man held up one hand and gestured, "Five points."

Xie Yuyao paid the money before she was allowed to proceed. It seems the black market organization here has connections, making transactions relatively safe.

The alleyways were interconnected, and most vendors stood with their baskets on their backs, displaying the contents. Buyers quietly inquired about price reductions.

After wandering around for a while, learning about the black market prices and familiarizing herself with the surrounding area, Xie Yuyao left empty-handed.

She went into a department store and bought two baskets of different sizes. Then she found an abandoned courtyard. After confirming that no one was around by using her spatial abilities, she opened the dilapidated door and slipped into the space.

The space allows you to see the scene within a hundred meters radius outside, much like a high-altitude camera, greatly reducing the possibility of it being damaged.

She changed into the worn-out shirt and black pants she had prepared before setting off, walked to the dressing mirror in the bamboo house, took out the whole set of cosmetics, and applied makeup in front of the mirror to create an ugly face covered with acne scars. Finally, she untied the two braids and braided them into a ponytail.

She wouldn't speak in a male voice, otherwise it would be safer to pretend to be a man.

For double protection, she changed to a blue headscarf, completely covering the lower half of her face below her eyes.

Now that I've finished changing my makeup, what items should I sell?

Naturally, she'd have to produce what the space could produce, so she'd use the rice and flour she'd stockpiled before. Although fruit was even scarcer, that was precisely why it would attract more attention, and she needed to keep a low profile now.

Carrying a basket on his back, he walked out of the space and came to the black market again.

Unsurprisingly, they were stopped by the lookouts again.

"Selling things."

"Three points."

"They charge admission for everything, it's a total money pit," Xie Yuyao muttered to herself, then paid another three cents to enter the alley.
