"What are you doing? They weren't even at your shop!" Pei Yuezhi said, a little angry.
This Baiweiju restaurant is really bullying people. First, they suppressed our own restaurant, and now they can't even tolerate an old person and a child, not to mention that the other party is just across the street and not in front of their store.
Liu Yuanyuan was also furious: "That's right, what are you trying to do! They didn't bother you at all!"
One of the waiters said dismissively, "This whole area is under the jurisdiction of Baiweiju Restaurant. They're affecting the hygiene of our restaurant. Do you think that's not a problem?"
“That’s right, ladies. They’re just beggars. Why bother with them?”
Another guy echoed the same dismissive tone.
The old man bowed tremblingly to the two men, pleading, "Please have mercy on me, my grandson is starving, I can go without food. Please have pity on him, even leftovers will do."
The two men were unmoved and instead laughed loudly: "That's hilarious! What do we care if you live or die? Get lost and don't delay our business!"
Pei Yuezhi was also furious and was about to argue with them when she heard two voices coming from behind her.
"You two bullies who rely on their master's power, I spit on you!"
"We said last time that if we saw you two, we'd beat you up! And you still dare to show off? You're the ones who should get lost!"
I don't know what grudge these four people had, but the two newcomers came in aggressively and started cursing as soon as they met. Perhaps they had really been beaten up before, because after cursing a few times, the two guys turned around and ran back.
Pei Yuezhi and Liu Yuanyuan exchanged a glance. These two older brothers who came later didn't seem to have very good tempers. Just as they were about to leave, they heard them talking.
"Grandpa, didn't I tell you not to come here? The people at Baiweiju are all heartless. You should take the children over there."
"That's right. I didn't see you when the porridge was being served at noon today. Luckily, we were just passing by, otherwise those two bastards from Baiweiju would have been cursing you out of the blue."
When the old beggar saw the two people, he said with tears in his eyes, "I'm really embarrassed to keep eating your food. I offered to help you carry your things, but you wouldn't let me. We're just beggars, so please don't interfere with your business."
"Sir, what are you saying? Since the establishment of Qingquanlou, our manager has said that although we are not very capable, we try our best to ensure that everyone in the town can have food. Please don't be embarrassed."
Upon hearing this, Pei Yuezhi realized that the two were employees of Qingquanlou Restaurant. It seemed that Qingquanlou was indeed a charitable establishment, and its employees would remember what the manager said. This was truly remarkable.
One of the men helped the elderly and children walk towards Qingquan Tower, while the other man thanked Pei Yuezhi and Liu Yuanyuan.
"I am truly grateful to the two ladies for speaking up for this grandfather and grandson. There are still many kind-hearted people in this world."
Pei Yuezhi asked with some curiosity, "Brother, are you from Qingquanlou? Does your restaurant provide free porridge every day?"
"Yes, our shopkeeper's family used to be poor and they went hungry. Now that they have some means, they can't bear to see people go hungry. Unfortunately, their abilities are limited, so they can only distribute porridge at the door."
"At first, there were quite a lot of people eating here, but as people ate here more often, some kind-hearted people, like the grandfather and grandson just now, couldn't bear to let our restaurant spend so much money. They offered to help us with the work, but they were in poor health and didn't have the strength, so how could we let them work? Over time, they stopped eating here and tried not to come as often as possible."
After understanding the situation, Pei Yuezhi thanked the man and then quickly left.
Liu Yuanyuan exclaimed in surprise, "The manager of Qingquanlou is so kind-hearted! He's such a good person! Why don't good people get good rewards? He's been overshadowed by Baiweiju!"
"Yes, the people at Baiweiju are really too much. If we weren't potential customers, I think they would have cursed us out too."
Both of them were a little angry. Everyone in Qingquanlou seemed to be kind-hearted, while Baiweiju was full of people who were hard to describe.
"Sister Pei?" A familiar voice rang out behind Pei Yuezhi.
"It really was you and Lady Liu. Just now, I was at the cloth shop next door and saw the people from Baiweiju bullying two beggars again. I was thinking of coming over to help them out. I didn't expect someone to speak up for them."
"You looked familiar, and when I got closer, it was indeed you. Where are you all going?"
The person who came was Qiao Zixun. Pei Yuezhi replied with a smile, "We just ordered vegetables and meat and were just passing by."
"I see. Are you two going to the shop? I haven't eaten yet, so I'll come along too."
"In that case, let's go together."
Throughout the journey, Qiao Zixun kept talking, praising Pei Yuezhi in every way, saying how delicious her cooking was, how capable she was, and how kind she was. He was incredibly talkative.
How come I didn't notice this before?
Upon arriving at the restaurant, Qiao Zixun thoughtfully asked Pei Yuezhi to go to the kitchen to prepare first, without rushing to order.
Pei Yuezhi ignored him and told Liu Yuanyuan to go back and fetch Fan Mu, while she went to stay in the kitchen.
Not long after, Liu Yuanyuan returned with the child.
"Yueyue, this young master Qiao keeps calling you 'Sister Pei,' but he calls me 'Lady Liu' so politely. It feels a bit strange."
Liu Yuanyuan and Pei Yuezhi chatted quietly, as the shop was quite small and they were afraid of being overheard.
Pei Yuezhi poked her cheek: "Because I'm Pei Yunzhi's older sister, what's so strange about that?"
"Is that so?" Liu Yuanyuan mumbled, and I couldn't hear what she said after that, because her two sisters-in-law came over and were getting ready to start business.
In order to open a new big store, Pei Yuezhi is full of motivation to cook and make more money, even while resting in a modern house!
Pei Yuezhi's sudden burst of energy left everyone bewildered. However, Liu Yuanyuan understood; she also longed for a modern lounge, which gave her extra motivation today.
Actually, my current savings are more than enough to open a larger store, but I don't know if I'll need to do any renovations or anything. Also, I haven't found a suitable location yet, so I can only wait and see.
"Yuezhi, my husband and his family are here again. They still have stir-fried mutton with scallions, twice-cooked pork, spicy fish chunks, stir-fried cabbage with vinegar, and braised tofu with scallions. They really love these dishes."
Thanks to Zhang Hongying, her husband Zhao Wen often brought Zhao Wu and the others over for meals. With the county magistrate in charge, things were much quieter, saving the old folks from causing trouble.
