Chapter Thirty-One: Settling on a Shop

"Around this time tomorrow, I'll go back and think about it, and then I'll give you a definite answer." Pei Yuezhi was very satisfied at the moment, but she didn't know if she would regret making a decision impulsively.

I'll go back today and have a good talk with Liu Yuanyuan before making a final decision.

"Yuanyuan, what do you think of this shop? It's the one I like the most so far."

“I also really like this shop, but there are two other shops for rent nearby, let’s go check them out.”

The two looked at two more shops for rent, and together with the ones they had seen before, they still preferred the shop owned by the elderly couple. Most of the items in the shop were still usable, which would save them some money. Moreover, the shop was very clean and tidy, and more importantly, it was pleasing to the eye and had a good location.

While working in the evening, the two were still discussing the shop, this time with Granny Liu joining them as an advisor.

"Are you talking about the shop at the end of the street by the dock? The owners are an elderly couple. The owner is very thin, but the owner's wife is very tall, even taller than her husband. Is this the one?" Grandma Liu asked.

Pei Yuezhi and Liu Yuanyuan both thought for a moment and then answered yes.

"This family is really nice. The owner and my wife were classmates and went to school together. They are both kind-hearted and good people. Their shop must be fine. They've been in business for many years."

Hearing this, the two liked the shop even more. It was already very appealing to them, and now with Grandma Liu's evaluation of the owners' character, they decided to rent it!

With the shop about to open, the group worked with incredible enthusiasm, and soon all the materials were ready.

......

If nothing unexpected happens, this will be the last few days of my stall business. With the rent paid one month in advance and a deposit, I'll only have a little over one or two taels of savings left.

So I need to make a little more lately. Today I made sixty chive and egg pancakes, eighty meat pancakes, and thirty savory pancakes.

After selling all the pancakes, Pei Yuezhi and Liu Yuanyuan couldn't wait to go to the shop. The owners were already waiting for them and quickly got up to greet them.

"You've arrived, please sit down."

After Pei Yuezhi sat down, she got straight to the point: "Boss, we've thought it all through, can we finalize it today?"

"Sure! Of course we can. Let's agree on this first: two taels a month. You'll need to pay a deposit upfront. If you decide not to rent within six months, I won't refund the deposit. But if you've paid for six months, I'll return it to you when you move out."

Pei Yuezhi agreed to everything, and the two sides reached an agreement, signing the contract on the spot in duplicate.

"Okay, we've reached an agreement. We've almost finished packing, and we'll move out tomorrow."

"This is the first month's rent, plus the deposit. Here you go." Pei Yuezhi readily took out the money.

The boss chuckled and took it, then said, "Our house is in a small alley not far ahead. I'll come over when it's time to pay the rent, so you don't need to make a trip."

After everything was settled, on the way back, Liu Yuanyuan's face was full of undisguised joy: "Yuanyuan! We have a shop now! That's great, now we're more stable."

"Yes, I'll go back and find someone to make a small sign. We'll still call it Moonlit Restaurant. We can't afford a plaque right now, but a sign will do."

The two happily went home and immediately shared this wonderful news with Grandma Liu and their three children.

Everyone was very excited. Even the usually taciturn Fan Chao kept saying how wonderful it was, with a big smile on his face.

"I need to figure out what to do at the new shop these next few days, but after paying the rent, I won't have any savings left. So we can't stop setting up the stall these next few days. Let's work hard together and get ready for a new beginning!"

"Alright!" Everyone was full of fighting spirit.

The current inventory is almost used up, and the special offers mall has been refreshed for three days, but she hasn't looked at the contents yet. When she went back to her room to rest, Pei Yuezhi opened the special offers section of the system mall.

Coarse noodles: 2 coins per pound (limited to 100 pounds per purchase); Brown rice: 2 coins per pound (limited to 100 pounds per purchase); Pork: 5 coins per pound (limited to 50 pounds per purchase); Milk: 2 coins per pound.

"The shop is about to open, so I need to buy rice, flour, and pork. All of this costs money!"

Pei Yuezhi still felt that she should buy the essentials first.

"System, one hundred catties of rice, one hundred catties of flour, and fifty catties of pork belly." After thinking for a moment, he added, "And buy ten catties of milk; I haven't had any in a long time."

After resting for a while, it was time to cook and eat. Liu Yuanyuan's garden had a lot of vegetables, so she picked some green beans and made a stew when she got back.

Liu Yuanyuan loves to eat it. It was made at Pei's father's house yesterday. When she came back and told her about it, she was craving it.

With a large family and only four pounds of spare ribs left, we decided to stew them all.

Just as Pei Yuezhi was about to wash the rice and steam it, Liu Yuanyuan came over.

"Yueyue, what are you planning to do?"

"A hodgepodge of ingredients is being cooked in one pot; I was just about to steam rice."

Liu Yuanyuan quickly came over to stop her: "Yuanyue, don't steam the rice yet. Make some dough and steam a couple of flower rolls on top!"

Upon hearing this, Pei Yuezhi thought it was a good idea: "Oh, you really know how to eat. I was thinking of just steaming some rice, not steaming flower rolls. I'll make the dough."

I put 10 grams of yeast and a little bit of sugar into two pounds of flour, and then put it in a warm place to ferment.

Liu Yuanyuan had already blanched the ribs. She put the ribs in a pot and stir-fried them first, then added scallions, ginger, garlic, star anise, and bay leaves. After stir-frying for a while, she added light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, and soybean paste. She simmered for 30 minutes, then added green beans and potatoes, and simmered for another 15 minutes.

The dough has almost risen. Knead it to release the air, then roll it into a large flatbread. Spread oil on it, sprinkle with salt and thirteen-spice powder, add a little dry flour, and spread it evenly.

Adding more chopped green onions to steamed buns makes them very fragrant, but cutting a lot of green onions really makes my eyes water.

"Yueyue, how about I cut it? Don't cry."

Under the onion's onion attack, Pei Yuezhi soon had tears welling up in her eyes and couldn't open them.

Liu Yuanyuan, who was also squinting beside her, said with a hint of reluctance.

"I'll be done soon, I'll finish chopping right away, those darn green onions."

Sprinkle plenty of chopped green onions onto the flatbread, then roll it up and cut it into even pieces.

Stack them in pairs, press down in the middle with chopsticks, twist, and the flower rolls are ready.

Now you can add salt and MSG to the pot, add a suitable amount, then spread the steamed buns on top, and simmer for about ten minutes.

The aroma is irresistible as soon as they come out of the pot. The plump, white steamed buns are soaked in broth at the bottom, the potatoes are mealy and crumbly, the green beans are soft and flavorful, and the ribs are so tender they fall off the bone easily.

"Dinner's ready."

Upon hearing the call to serve dinner, everyone spontaneously came to help.

It was another meal that smelled so good it made me dizzy!
