Chapter Sixteen: Grandma Liu is Back (tushumi.cc)

As I was walking back, I heard someone hawking savory pancakes and steamed dumplings with pickled cabbage.

"Has someone already copied it so quickly?" Pei Yuezhi wondered to herself.

Looking in the direction of the sound, I saw that there weren't many customers buying anything. As I got a little closer, I could tell that the steamed dumplings were cold and hard. The savory pancakes were also sold in the same way, wrapped in lotus leaves and sold in individual portions, so I couldn't tell what they were like.

But it definitely won't taste as good as hers.

Not many people bought it, and I even heard someone say it wasn't very tasty.

Pei Yuezhi was very confident in her cooking skills, especially with the help of modern seasonings, so she didn't take it too seriously.

On the way back, Pei Yuezhi was thinking about what to have for dinner. Although she hadn't earned much, with the system around, things would only get better.

We can't just make do because we're not rich yet. Besides, the children still need to grow.

When she got home, the yard and the house were quiet. Even the little dog Benben was gone, definitely still in the front yard. Pei Yuezhi lay down to rest for a while and started thinking about what to cook.

I realized I haven't had noodles in ages, so I'll make a braised noodle dish. While they're all out, I'll open the online store and buy some eggs and green peppers.

Eggs cost about one coin each outside, but two eggs cost one coin in the mall.

What a conscience! The system store is definitely the most conscientious seller!

Ten, please! We'll be happy even if we can't finish them all. With this system, we're winning like crazy!

The braised noodles with green pepper and egg sauce were her favorite food when she was a child.

I grew up in the countryside. Although the conditions weren't bad, we didn't buy meat very often.

The dish I eat most often is this braised sauce. Although it's called a braised sauce, it's actually more like a sauce, since it's made by stir-frying with soy sauce.

However, hand-pulled noodles are quick to make, so there's no rush to make them now.

Pei Yuezhi was lying comfortably in the courtyard when she suddenly saw a woman standing—no, pressed against—by the wall of Liu Yuanyuan's yard. She looked like a young woman, but her face was unclear. All she could see was her tiptoeing as she peered into Liu Yuanyuan's yard.

He didn't look like a good person at all. Pei Yuezhi got up calmly and walked up to him.

"Hey sis, who are you looking for? Let me help you find them." Pei Yuezhi walked over quietly, suddenly patted her shoulder, and said loudly.

The man was startled, turned around and saw Pei Yuezhi, and said irritably, "No need."

The person spying on them was Sun Xiaomei, Liu Yuanyuan's sister-in-law.

Pei Yuezhi naturally didn't recognize this person, and looked into the courtyard with some curiosity.

In the courtyard, Liu Yuanyuan was arguing with an old woman. Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be none other than her "mother," Aunt Liu.

Aunt Liu stood with her hands on her hips, displaying an arrogant and domineering demeanor.

They've probably come to propose marriage again.

Pei Yuezhi quickly ran over, afraid that if Aunt Liu made a move, Liu Yuanyuan would suffer.

Once inside the courtyard, the sounds became even clearer. Aunt Liu was still spouting the same old rhetoric: whether she wanted to marry or not, she had to marry; it was her own mother's or her parents' decision; and so on and so forth.

Pei Yuezhi had a bad feeling. Last time, Aunt Liu was scared away because she was caught off guard. This time, she definitely wouldn't come unprepared.

It seems that someone has already devised a countermeasure for my explanation.

There was nothing she could do. Although she and Liu Yuanyuan were good friends, they were outsiders in this world. Besides this excuse, she didn't know what else to say.

These days, even an upright official finds it difficult to settle family disputes.

"Aunt Liu, you've finally come! You left so suddenly last time, and I haven't paid you back yet. Ten taels."

Aunt Liu, who was standing with her hands on her hips cursing, was not in a hurry when she saw Pei Yuezhi arrive. Instead, she calmly said, "As for the money, this old woman doesn't have it. I'm just preventing her from getting married. Once she's married, you can just go to her husband's family and ask for the money, right?"

Sure enough, his reason was far too weak.

Pei Yuezhi thought for a moment and said, "Auntie, what you said makes sense, but a woman should obey her husband after marriage. Her husband's family still has members. If you let her remarry, will her mother-in-law agree?"

Upon hearing the mention of Liu Yuanyuan's mother-in-law, Aunt Liu became a little flustered and quickly turned to look outside the wall.

Following her gaze, I saw Sun Xiaomei making faces at me.

Aunt Liu was a bit slow-witted and didn't understand what she meant, so she asked, "Are you blinded? Say something."

Seeing this, Sun Xiaomei could only say, "Sister, we're all family. Mother is your own mother, and you're our own sister too. You have to listen to Mother."

Aunt Liu added, "Why do you care so much? I'm her mother, so I'm the one who makes the decisions."

Liu Yuanyuan was very angry and retorted loudly, "You are no longer my mother, what right do you have to interfere in my marriage?"

Hearing this, Aunt Liu became even angrier: "Let me tell you, I can decide who you marry, and you have to marry whoever I want. I'll make the decisions about your marriage."

"You're a widow. If it weren't for your mother, would anyone want you? What's this about a woman following her husband after marriage? What good is that old hag? Let her come if she dares!"

Perhaps because Liu Yuanyuan had shouted at her in front of an outsider like Pei Yuezhi, Aunt Liu felt embarrassed and launched into a tirade, even cursing Liu Yuanyuan's mother-in-law.

"Alright, I'm here. Tell me what you want." A strong female voice came from the courtyard gate, and then a woman with a basket on her shoulder stood at the gate with a cold face.

This is Liu Yuanyuan's mother-in-law. She's been visiting relatives these past few days and isn't home, which gave Aunt Liu the opportunity to bother her.

"Speak up! What are you going to do with this old hag? I'm here!" Granny Liu shouted when she saw that she didn't speak.

"Dear...in-law, why are you back?" Aunt Liu had clearly lost the toughness she had in front of Liu Yuanyuan.

Grandma Liu put down her basket, shielded Liu Yuanyuan behind her, and looked at Aunt Liu with her arms crossed: "In-law? Your daughter was only six years old when you sold her! How are you related to me as in-laws!"

"You even asked me why I came back? This is my home. You came to my home, forced my child to get married, and you still have the nerve to ask me!"

As she was pressed for answers, Aunt Liu retreated step by step: "I...I...I did it all for the child's sake. This marriage is so good. The man has said he likes the child. She's a widow; she's lucky to have someone want her."

Thinking of something, Aunt Liu stuck out her neck and said again, "I'm her own mother too. It's one thing for her not to appreciate it, but she even dares to scold me. She has no manners at all."

Upon hearing this, Granny Liu was furious and immediately swung her slingshot at him.

He hit her while cursing: "You have no manners? You have manners but you spew filth. You call yourself a mother? Yuanyuan did all the housework when she was six years old. She was as skinny as a four-year-old. I raised her. She's my child! You old bastard, I'll make sure you die today."

After being hit like that, Aunt Liu got anxious, and the two started tearing at each other. Sun Xiaomei didn't dare to watch the commotion, because if she didn't come to help, she would definitely get a scolding when she got home.
