Chapter 495: Modern Era (If-Things) (23)
On their first night at the training base, many students found it difficult to adjust.
First of all, the dormitory has no air conditioning. Dozens of students live in one dormitory and rely on just a few fans. Everyone is so hot that they can't sleep.
There were still many mosquitoes, so the teachers distributed mosquito coils to each dormitory. There were seven classes, but only five dormitories in total: two for girls and three for boys.
When the teacher distributed mosquito coils to one of the girls' dormitories, he found that the dormitory was crowded with girls and there were no beds available, so some students were sleeping on the floor.
"Why did you all end up in one dorm room? Aren't you tired of it being crowded?"
Teacher Chen, who was leading the group, asked the children questions, finding it very strange. When they arrived in the afternoon, the children were complaining that so many girls were crammed into just two dorm rooms.
Now everyone's crowding into one dorm room; at least most of them came from another dorm.
These high school teachers have at least ten years of teaching experience. Having dealt with many students, they know that children of this age are going through puberty, are sensitive, and are prone to various minor conflicts.
When the teachers saw that they had all come to the same dormitory, they immediately wondered if there had been some kind of conflict.
They all exclaimed in unison, "Teacher, there are no mosquitoes in this dormitory!"
The teachers were handing out mosquito coils to light for them when they heard what the children said, and immediately stopped what they were doing.
No mosquitoes?
Teacher Chen smiled and said, "How could there be no mosquitoes? The boys in the innermost dormitory say that the mosquitoes in their dormitory are so numerous that they could carry them away. They wish they could light all our mosquito coils. How come it's the opposite here?"
"Teacher, there really aren't any mosquitoes!"
A girl from another dormitory said, "There are a lot of mosquitoes in our dormitory too. Xia Meng said that there are no mosquitoes in their dormitory, so I came over. I haven't been bitten once yet. I have a body that attracts mosquitoes like crazy!"
After this girl finished speaking, the other girls also chimed in, saying that there weren't any mosquitoes at all.
There are no mosquitoes, not even small insects like moths.
It's time to wash up now, and the lights are still on in the dormitory. This is in the suburbs, with vast stretches of wasteland outside. At night, the buzzing of mosquitoes and all sorts of small insects is so loud that it's impossible to sleep.
It's so hot, and all the windows are open, with only screens separating them. All the little bugs fly onto the screens.
When Teacher Chen heard what they said, she ran to the window and saw that there were indeed small insects, but compared to the other dormitories, these insects were much quieter, just lying on the window and looking as if they were already dead.
After walking around the dormitory with its large communal sleeping area, the teachers did not find any mosquitoes.
When they went to distribute mosquito coils to other dormitories, they were bitten the whole way, but when they got to this dormitory, they weren't bitten by mosquitoes.
Although there were no mosquitoes, the teachers still left some mosquito coils in the dormitory to prevent mosquitoes from biting them and keeping them awake at night.
The news that there were no mosquitoes in Dormitory No. 2 spread among the other dormitories. The girls in the other dormitory who hadn't come over yet, unable to bear the mosquito bites any longer, all came over.
With more people, there weren't enough beds, so the girls in Dormitory No. 2 suggested squeezing in. Two girls could barely fit on a 1.2-meter-wide bed.
Anuo saw that the girls from Dormitory 1 had all come over. If they weren't allowed to squeeze in, they would have to sleep on the floor. The girls from Dormitory 1 said they didn't mind sleeping on the floor.
Girls are generally very kind and compassionate, and most people are willing to accept girls from other dormitories.
It wasn't that Anuo was unwilling, but she wasn't used to sharing a bed with people she didn't know well.
So she gave up her bed and went to find her roommate.
When she arrived, her roommates invited her to sleep with them.
"Oh my, our little darling is here! Come on, come sleep with your big sister!"
Her roommates laughed and patted their beds, teasing her, "Little Nuonuo is so chubby, it must be so soft and sweet to sleep with her, she can have a sweet dream."
"Don't try to take it from me!"
"That depends on who Xiao Anuo wants to sleep with; there's no way to force her to."
Anuo smiled at her roommates, then looked at Lin Xu, who was sleeping by the window.
She was sleeping on her side, with her back to them, and looked as if she were asleep.
Just as Anno was staring at her back, she suddenly turned around and met Anno's gaze.
The two looked at each other for a few seconds before Lin Xu asked, "Do you prefer to sleep inside or outside?"
Anuo couldn't help but smile and sat down beside her bed. "I'll sleep outside."
Lin Xu moved over to make room for her.
Seeing that Anuo chose to sleep with Lin Xu, Xia Meng shook her head and sighed, "Sigh, little Anuo still likes Lin Xu the most."
Anuo squeezed closer to Lin Xu and whispered "hmm" in Lin Xu's ear.
The dormitory lights were quickly turned off, but today was the first day at the training base. More than a hundred people slept in their dormitory, so it was impossible to fall asleep immediately. Everyone was chatting or playing on their phones.
Lin Xu was still sleeping with his back to Anuo, sleeping on his side to make the most of the space.
Anuo listened to Xia Meng in the next bed say, "It's really strange, why are there no mosquitoes in our dorm? Is it because our dorm has good feng shui?"
"Could there be something in our location that keeps mosquitoes and insects away?"
These words immediately frightened the timid girl. "Holy crap, don't scare me! This is the outskirts of the city! I heard there's a cemetery not far away!"
In such a remote place, once this topic came up, all sorts of strange and bizarre stories immediately started coming out of the girls' mouths.
Anno listened to their strange tales, a smile playing on her lips in the darkness.
Just then, her phone, which was next to her pillow, lit up. She picked it up and saw that it was a message from Baroque: "Xiaoqi, I really want to go to your dorm and sleep on the floor right now. The girls in your dorm are so lucky. With you here, there are no mosquitoes at all. I'm about to be sucked dry by mosquitoes."
Baroque sent her a few crying emojis, and Anno replied: You can sleep on the floor outside our dorm, there shouldn't be any mosquitoes there.
Baroque: No, I'll be seen as a pervert!
Anno: Then you can keep letting the mosquitoes suck your blood.
Baroque posted a few more crying emojis.
"Using your phone in the dark is bad for your eyes."
Lin Xu suddenly turned to An Nuo and said.
Anno paused for a moment, then turned off his phone and placed it back next to his pillow.
Lin Xu said, "Aren't your eyes sensitive to light? Try to avoid strong light. Use your phone with the lights off, because the light from the phone is like strong light shining into your eyes."
This was the first time Anuo had heard her say so much in one breath, so she hugged her waist tightly and said, "Okay."
Lin Xu stiffened slightly, feeling a little awkward as Anuo hugged him and touched her warm body, but he didn't say anything and just remained in his previous sleeping position.
After several patrols by the teachers and their encouragement to go to sleep, the dormitory gradually quieted down, and Anuo soon drifted off to sleep.
The next morning, the instructors blew their whistles to gather everyone together.
The first-year high school students hurriedly got up, dressed, and rushed to the playground.
After an hour of training, the instructors let them go to eat breakfast, and the students were all awake.
"Damn, you know I had a nightmare last night?"
In the cafeteria, students gathered together, talking about their mosquito bite experiences from the previous night.
However, it was all the boys who got bitten by mosquitoes.
"What kind of nightmare?"
"I dreamt that I was carried away by mosquitoes, taken to their nest, and they sucked me dry."
After the boy finished speaking, the students next to him made a disgusted "Eek!" sound.
"There are so many mosquitoes here, they kept me awake until midnight."
The boys complained and showed the girls the bite marks on their bodies. Each of them had at least a dozen bites, and it really looked terrible.
"There are no mosquitoes in our girls' dormitory," one of the girls said happily.
"How is that possible!"
The boys noticed that the girls all looked refreshed and radiant, clearly indicating they had all slept well the night before.
Last night, while they were sleeping, they heard girls in the group chat saying that there were no mosquitoes in the dorm. They thought the girls were exaggerating or deliberately trying to fool them, but now it seems that what they said might be true.
"This place is terrifying."
Huo Xuan sat down opposite Anuo and the others with breakfast in hand, scratching the red bumps on his hands from mosquito bites.
Baroque, sitting next to Anno, was also clutching his bag with a troubled expression. Anno brought him some medicine to apply: "Don't scratch it, or it will get infected."
Seeing Anuo carefully applying medicine to Baroque, Huo Xuan immediately went over and said, "Apply some medicine to me too, little princess."
Baroque shoved him away, saying, "This is my sister. If you want to apply medicine, go find your own sister."
Huo Xuan curled his lip. "I don't have a younger sister. I only have an older brother and an older sister. My sister is a tyrant. I'm lucky if she doesn't twist my head off."
Baroque sighed, deliberately provoking Huo Xuan, "It's still better to have a younger sister."
Huo Xuan snorted twice, "Believe it or not, I'll snatch your sister away for you."
Baroque glared at him. "You dare! No one can take my sister away from me!"
After breakfast, the new students began their day of training at the base. When training ended in the evening, the instructors informed the students that they would have outdoor training the next day, which would involve mountain climbing.
Upon hearing that they would be climbing a mountain, all the students felt utterly dejected.
"Here, take this and you shouldn't get bitten by mosquitoes."
Anno plucked a hair from his head and put it in Baroque's hand.
Her hair is usually dyed chestnut brown with a special solution. When she pulls it out, her hair turns back to its original pinkish-gold color and emits a faint glow in the dark.
Baroque looked at the glowing hair in his hand, hesitating slightly, "Is Xiao Qi okay?"
Anuo said, "If you can't, you can sleep on the floor outside our dormitory."
Baroque put her hair under his pillow, and as a result, not a single mosquito came near him all night.
Even the beds next to him enjoyed the privilege of not being bitten by mosquitoes.
