Chapter 422: His Pain

Chapter 422: His Pain

After satisfying their curiosity about Zero Nine's mechanical body, Anno and the other two squeezed into the only bed to sleep.

Ling Jiu turned off all the lights in the room, leaned against the balcony, and looked at Anno, who was sleeping soundly in the middle of the bed. She and Sitar were sleeping sweetly in each other's arms. Ming Xiao put his hands on the two of them and leaned in slightly, in a protective posture.

The person he had longed to find day and night was now right in front of him. The huge emptiness in Ling Jiu's heart was gradually filled, and his soul seemed to finally settle down and find its home.

He placed his hand in front of him and moved the mechanical wrist, making a slight clicking sound.

Now his body has been dismantled into pieces; he is merely a cold killing machine. Instead of blood, energy tubes flow through his body. Those who imprisoned him in the past made him perfect, and he even believes it himself: a perfect body, but a broken heart.

Even now that he has met the person he is looking for, he feels that this body is also incomplete, and that even his soul does not belong to him, but to another so-called entity.

Ling Jiu's deep blue eyes gazed out at the vast city. Who exactly was he?

Don't you need to sleep?

Hearing the sound, Ling Jiu turned her head to look. Anuo sat up from the bed, rubbing her eyes, her voice incredibly soft.

His heart felt as if it had been gently tapped by a small hammer, and it softened.

"It doesn't matter whether I sleep or not," he said.

Seeing Anuo get out of bed, he went over and picked her up, placing her on the floor. "Do you need to use the restroom?"

"Um."

Lingjiu turned on the light for her and took her to the bathroom.

After using the toilet, Anuo climbed back onto the bed. She looked at Ling Jiu, who had returned to his original position, gently patted Xitar, who was about to wake up, placed Mingxiao's hand on Xitar, and coaxed him back to sleep. Then she went to Ling Jiu's side.

Ling Jiu looked at her, puzzled. "Can't sleep?"

Anno took his hand and looked up at him: "Take me to see this city, okay? I'd like to get to know where you live."

Ling Jiu looked down at her for a while, then took the coat and shoes from the side and put them on her. "It's cold outside."

On the rooftop, Anno, wrapped in a blanket, leaned against Lingjiu, gazing at the brightly lit city below. It had just rained, and the air still smelled damp.

Lingjiu was afraid she would be cold, so he hugged her to warm her up.

Anno watched as energy flowed across his arm, and his cool mechanical body gradually warmed up.

He was quite different from any of the Caesar clones she had encountered before. The first time she looked at him, his eyes were cold and full of killing intent, devoid of any human warmth.

He now seems somewhat numb, as if he can't express his feelings, or perhaps he has been hurt too much and has worn away all his emotions.

Anno looked at the number on his arm and placed her hand on his arm. "Zero Nine, do you remember what race you used to be?"

"I don't quite remember," Lingjiu replied.

Anno couldn't tell anything from his face. Right now, only his brain and heart were still his own. He wasn't a Zerg and couldn't communicate with them through the consciousness network. He could hide things and speak, but Anno had to make his own judgments.

Ling Jiu looked down at her, gently stroking the back of her head before withdrawing his hand, as if touching a precious and fragile treasure, afraid of breaking it.

Of course he remembered what race he used to be, how those people cut him into pieces and fused him with mechanical materials, how they turned him into a knife, a beast, and a plaything and tool in their hands.

Now he doesn't need to talk to her anymore. He doesn't need to use these hardships to gain her sympathy. He can deal with anyone who wants to hurt him now, and there's no need to transfer this pain onto others anymore.

"I understand that kind of pain."

He watched as Anno's soft fingers traced his arm. "That was my most fearful past. Sometimes I still have nightmares about that glaringly lit medical room, where people's eyes are like venomous snakes staring at me, and they hold sharp knives, wanting to cut me open piece by piece."

Anno's tone was calm, but Ling Jiu's eyes suddenly turned icy, filled with a sharp killing intent. He clenched his fist tightly. "Where are they!"

Anno clenched his fist. "They're probably dead. I killed two surgeons before I escaped."

Hearing her say that, Ling Jiu's mind flashed back to the voice of that main body, "It's all your fault for being useless. You didn't find her in time and let her suffer the same pain as you. You know how painful that must have been."

These words pierced his mind like needles. He covered his head, and his heart felt as if it were being tightly gripped by a large hand. Even though he didn't need to breathe, he felt suffocated.

Seeing the pain in his eyes, Anuo stood up and hugged his head. "It's all in the past now. I'm right here. You've done a great job."

Ling Jiu wanted to hug Anuo tightly, but she lowered her raised hand and let Anuo hug her and comfort her softly.

The soft voice gradually soothed the pain in his head. He looked up at her and saw that she was a noble little queen insect, yet she was so gentle to her rebellious clone.
