Chapter 477: If Modern Era (05)
From South Africa to the capital of East Wuzhou, it takes more than ten hours to cross the ocean by plane.
After the plane took off, Anunu leaned against the window and watched for a long time.
Hicks figured it must be her first time flying, and she was probably still quite curious and excited.
“We’re in the sky,” Anunu said, turning to him.
He laughed and said, "Yes, we're in the sky, and the plane is taking us home."
Anunu looked outside again, then sat back down and asked him, "Can we fly a little higher?"
Hicks gave her a serious explanation of the aircraft's performance. When Anunu heard that the highest altitude the aircraft could fly was only about 10,000 meters, the excitement on her face immediately faded.
She didn't know what 10,000 meters meant, but Hicks told her it was roughly their current altitude, and that going a little higher wouldn't make much of a difference.
Apa stood up from behind and, perched on their heads, told Anunu, "Anunu, if you want to go even higher, you can use a rocket! Rockets can fly to outer space!"
Anunu immediately stood up from her seat. She was clearly very interested in this flying vehicle. She hadn't learned the language very well and was talking to Apa, who was only half-fluent in Nanska, in a language that neither of them could understand.
The two chatted for a long time, and Apa had already started bragging to make Anunu happy.
"Our rockets can already carry people to the moon to build a base there. In a few more years, we might be able to settle on Mars."
"It's not just Mars. Once we can fly out of Earth and conquer the solar system, the next step is to conquer the Milky Way, and then the entire universe."
"When we have a spaceship, I'll take Anunu with me to travel through space and pick stars for you!"
Apa spoke with increasing enthusiasm, and Anunu listened with great interest.
Bai Zhi reached out and patted him on the back of the head. "There's a limit to bragging. Anunu is still young. She'll believe it all in a minute."
Wen Jia looked at the magazine without looking up and said, "With our current level of technology, let alone ten or twenty years, we won't be able to leave the solar system even in a hundred years."
Anunu couldn't understand Dongwuzhou dialect. She held a toy airplane given to her by the flight attendant and pretended to take off.
She imagined herself one day riding in a vehicle that could fly into the sky and travel among the stars.
She didn't know why she loved the starry sky and flying so much.
She just felt that among those countless stars, there would be one that she wanted to find.
Anunu and Apa played with puzzles and Lego together, and after they got tired, they ate a big meal and went to sleep.
Hicks asked the flight attendant to bring her a blanket and covered her up. She curled up in a ball, clutching her rabbit plushie, and went to sleep.
Hicks brushed the long hair from her cheek and looked at her with affection.
It was nighttime, the lights on the plane were off, and everyone had fallen asleep.
Hicks was awakened by the little girl's babbling beside him after a while. He was a light sleeper and would wake up at the slightest noise.
He heard the little girl speaking the same language he couldn't understand before. She was repeating the same words over and over again. Hicks couldn't understand them and couldn't analyze their meaning.
He recorded all the things she said, and planned to have someone analyze them later.
At 2 a.m., the plane landed at Beijing Airport.
Anunu was still half asleep when Hicks took out the thick clothes he had bought at the store and helped her put them on one by one. It was winter now, and the capital was different from the hot desert. The temperature outside was only a few degrees Celsius, and it was estimated that it would snow in a few days.
Anunu barely opened her eyes, but when she saw it was him, she closed them again and went back to sleep, ignoring his movements.
Hicks carried Anunu off the plane, collected their luggage, and went through security. His adoptive parents were already waiting for them at the airport exit.
From afar, he saw his adoptive parents standing at the exit, with his sister Tao Tao Le and brother Ota by his side.
The two younger siblings are both still in elementary school, and it's currently their winter break.
Upon seeing him, Tao Tao waved and shouted at him, while Ota remained as arrogant as ever.
He carried Anunu over, and Tang Ting took the luggage from his hands and Anunu's backpack, saying gently, "You're back."
"Yes, I'm back, Dad."
"Big brother!"
Tao Tao rushed over and hugged him. Luo Jin pulled her aside, then leaned closer to him. Seeing the little girl he was holding, he whispered, "Still asleep?"
Hicks looked at Anunu and smiled slightly, "Yes, I played with Apa and the others for a while on the plane. I'll probably need a few days to adjust to the time difference when I get back."
Lokin looked at Anunu with great interest, touched her little face and said, "This child is really beautiful."
Tao Tao Le leaned closer and whispered, "I want to see my little sister too!"
Ota appeared out of nowhere, holding a cute little bear plush toy.
Tang Ting said, "Let's go back first."
After leaving the airport, Hicks parted ways with Apa and the others for the time being. They all lived in the capital and could get together again later when they had time.
Anunu woke up as soon as she got in the car.
She stood there in Hicks' arms for a moment, stunned, before realizing that she was no longer on the plane.
Seeing that she was awake, Luo Jin, who was sitting next to her, handed her the milk she had prepared. "Baby, you're awake? Drink some milk to warm your stomach first. We'll make you something delicious when we get home."
Anunu blinked and looked at her, feeling that she looked very familiar.
Hicks reminded her, "Anunu, this is my mother, and she will be your mother from now on."
Tang Ting, who was driving in front, turned around and looked at her, smiling, "Anunu, I'm your dad."
Anunu then remembered that she had seen them on Hicks's phone before.
Login and Tangtin both speak the official language of Yugoslavia, but Anunu only knows a local dialect and can only understand a few sentences of the official Yugoslavian language in daily conversation.
Seeing her bewildered look, Hicks immediately explained to her parents, and after listening, Locke said a sentence to her in the dialect she could understand.
Lokin speaks many languages; she even taught Hicks his Nanska.
Upon hearing the familiar language, Anunu instantly felt a sense of affection for her beautiful and gentle mother.
She took the milk, and her eyes lit up when she smelled its sweet aroma.
The milk was at the perfect temperature, not too sweet. After a few sips, she felt warm all over and much more awake.
"Little Seven, I'm your fifth sister!"
Peach Le poked her head out from behind, and Anunu looked up at her with a puzzled expression.
Hicks pressed her head back down. "Sit still, buckle up and don't move around. Little Seven doesn't understand Dongwuzhou language. If you want to communicate with your sister, you'd better learn Nanska."
Tao Tao immediately looked distressed. She had tried to learn from them before, but she couldn't keep it up for long.
"Give."
Ota handed over the teddy bear, saying, "Here you go, I'm your fourth brother."
Anunu could understand what he was saying, took the bear, and said, "Thank you, brother."
Before boarding the plane, Hicks had told her about his family, and Anunu thought that since Hicks was such a good person, his family must be very good too.
She can now clearly feel the goodwill they are projecting towards her.
When Tao Tao heard Anunu call Ota "brother," she immediately made up her mind to learn Yugoska properly this time.
"What's this?"
Anunu noticed that it was snowing outside, opened her eyes wide, and pressed her face full of curiosity against the car window.
Hicks said softly, "This is snow."
Upon arriving at their villa in the residential complex, Hicks immediately put Anunu on the snow and let her play by herself for a while after getting out of the car.
This was the first time Anunu had experienced such a chill, so different from the desert night.
She crouched down and scooped up a handful of snow with her hands; the cool, refreshing touch was just like the ice cubes she liked.
But it's softer than ice, fine and fluffy, like sand, yet it won't slip through your fingers like sand.
Hicks and Locke were watching her play in the snow with affection when, a second later, they saw her stuff snow into her mouth.
"Hey..." They all reached out their hands to her.
Hicks immediately swept the snow away from her hands, and Anunu was also startled by the icy touch on her mouth.
Seeing Anunu shiver twice, Hicks said with a wry smile, "This snow has no taste, it's not tasty."
Luo Jin stroked her head and said, "You must be hungry. Let's go home. There's good food there."
Tao Tao looked at Anunu with heartache, "Little Seven is so pitiful, she's so hungry she even ate snow."
Ota reached into his pocket and pulled out a handful of candy, handing it to Anunu.
With the sugar, Anunu no longer craved the taste of snow.
Back home, the warmth from the heating soon made Anunu feel warm again.
Hicks helped her take off her thick cotton coat and put on comfortable cotton slippers for her. Anunu looked at the beautiful big house with curiosity.
The house was cozy, with a warm, pale yellow color scheme, quite different from the colorful bungalows she had seen in the desert town.
As soon as Logan and Tang Ting returned, they busied themselves in the kitchen. Although they had a nanny, whenever they were free at home, they would cook for the children themselves.
Tao Tao and Ota each turned on the TV and took out toys and snacks for their younger sister, staying by her side the whole time, worried that she might not be used to the new house.
Seeing so many snacks, Hicks immediately grabbed a large box, packed them all up, and said to Tao Tao with a smile, "No snacks allowed during meals."
Tao Tao Le retorted, "Big brother, it's three in the morning, three o'clock!"
Hicks glanced at her sideways. "Then why don't you go to sleep?"
He had barely finished speaking when Lokin's voice came from the kitchen, "Tao Tao Le! Ota! Go to sleep! Don't make me call you a second time!"
"Let me play with my little sister a little longer. She just came to our house, and she must be unfamiliar with and scared of you adults. I have to stay with her."
Luo Jin brought out a bowl of food, placed it on the table, and then glared at the two siblings. They shrank back, stopped talking, and quickly went back to their rooms to sleep.
Hicks laughed, "They're quite energetic, even going with you to pick someone up at 2 a.m.
Lokin sat down next to Anunu, handed her a chicken leg, and said, "They heard that a new little sister is coming to the family, and they're so excited they can't sleep. When they come back from vacation, they like to secretly stay up all night playing games, just like night owls."
Hicks raised an eyebrow: "Looks like only Baroque is somewhat obedient."
He had barely finished speaking when he heard a voice in the stairwell, "Mom, is my little sister here?"
