Chapter 492: Modern Era (If-Things) (20)
Anuo followed behind Lin Xu without saying a word, until Lin Xu stopped and turned around to look at her.
She couldn't help but ask Anuo, "Why are you following me?"
Anno said, "Let's see when you stop because of the pain."
Lin Xu didn't expect her to say that, so she turned her face away and said, "I'm not in pain."
"If it didn't hurt, you would walk like this."
Anuo walked up to her, squatted down with her back to her, and said, "Your feet are blistered and bleeding. Come on up."
Lin Xu was taken aback when she suddenly squatted down. Her gaze lingered on her back for a moment until An Nuo looked up at her, patted her back and said, "Come on up, I'm hungry. Let's go eat together later."
“No need, I can walk by myself.” She refused decisively.
"Nono!"
Baroque ran over from a distance, saw Anno squatting on the ground, reached out and pulled her up, "Nono, come on, I'll take you to eat."
Lin Xu glanced at Baroque, then turned to leave. Anuo grabbed her arm and said to Baroque, "Brother, squat down."
Baroque was a little confused. After noticing Lin Xu standing next to him, his gaze fell on the wound on her knee.
“My roommate disliked me because I was too young and didn’t want me to carry him.”
A hint of surprise flashed across Lin Xu's face. She did indeed think that An Nuo was young and needed to be taken care of, and that she shouldn't bother her under any circumstances. She didn't expect that An Nuo knew what she was thinking.
only
“I’m not being disgusted,” she explained.
Anno smiled at her and said, "I know."
Her smile was like sunlight shining through ice, instantly softening Lin Xu's stubborn gaze.
"Brother, hurry up." Anno patted Baroque on the back.
"Okay, sure."
Baroque usually listened to Anuo the most and always granted her requests. He immediately squatted down in front of Lin Xu and said, "Come on up, classmate, don't mind."
Anno had already shown her such concern, and refusing her repeatedly would only make her feel uncomfortable. Lin Xu said nothing more and climbed onto Baroque's back.
Upon arriving at the infirmary, the doctor cleaned the wound on Lin Xu's knee. An Nuo's gaze fell on Lin Xu's left shoe. "Take off your shoe and get your foot wound treated too."
Lin Xu then took off the ill-fitting shoes. Several blisters had formed on his left foot, and they had all broken, looking painful.
"What shoe size do you wear?" Anno suddenly asked.
Lin Xu glanced at her and said, "Thirty-seven."
Anno immediately looked at Baroque, who suddenly understood and turned to leave the infirmary.
The doctor disinfected and treated Lin Xu's wound, and gave her a few instructions: "Remember not to get it wet, and come in every day to change the dressing."
"Thank you, doctor."
Lin Xu glanced at Anuo, who was sitting to the side playing on her phone. Anuo had her head down and her fingers were tapping rapidly on her phone, probably chatting with someone.
She didn't call out to her, but bent down to pick up her shoes and put them on. A hand reached out and took hers. "Your shoes are too small. Do you still want to wear them?"
Lin Xu paused for a moment, then said, "This is the only pair of shoes I own."
"Wait a little longer," Anno said.
Five minutes later, Baroque brought Lin Xu a new pair of sneakers.
"No need, it's too expensive, beyond my budget," Lin Xu said.
"These shoes are of very good quality and very comfortable to wear. You can pay me back when you have the money."
Anuo didn't offer to give them to her, but placed the shoes beside her feet. "Put them on quickly so we can go eat. I'm starving."
Lin Xu looked down at the simple-style sneakers and said, "Thank you."
After putting on her shoes, Lin Xu found that her foot, which had been treated for the wound, was no longer in so much pain; in fact, she could hardly feel any pain at all.
When the doctor disinfected her wound just now, it was still incredibly painful.
Anuo smiled faintly and asked her, "Can you walk? Do you want my brother to carry you again?"
Baroque was about to squat down when he heard this, but Lin Xu shook his head at them, "No need, it doesn't hurt much anymore."
As she spoke, she took a few steps, no longer limping as before.
Baroque laughed and said, "The doctor's medical skills are superb."
The three of them went to the cafeteria for dinner together, and then returned to their respective classes for evening self-study.
Xia Meng and several of her roommates gathered around Lin Xu, concerned about her injuries.
Lin Xu was no longer as indifferent as before, and even exchanged a few words with them.
After they left, Lin Xu turned to look at Anuo, who was two seats away from her. Anuo was hunched over her desk, writing and drawing. Several classmates tried to talk to her, but she didn't pay much attention to them.
There hasn't been a formal class assignment yet. A placement test was held before the start of the semester. After a day of military training, everyone was too tired to study in the evening. Since there were no teachers on duty, everyone gathered together to chat or read books on their own during evening self-study. Some students simply didn't come to evening self-study.
Everyone talked about the class assignments. There are seven classes for the first-year high school students, all arranged according to their academic performance.
Although no one knows the class placement scores yet, they are basically similar to the entrance exam scores, so everyone is using their previous scores to make inferences.
"I'm not good enough. At best, I can only get into Class Two."
"Me too, I could barely get into Class 3."
"I don't even need to think about it, I'll just lie down and go to Class 7."
Xia Meng and her friends were sitting together. After discussing their grades, they immediately went to ask their two quiet roommates.
Anuo had told them before that her grades weren't very good, and Xia Meng said, "This time it's based on individual exam scores, so maybe you'll have a chance to get into a better class?"
“I didn’t take the placement test,” Anno said.
Xia Meng and the others looked at her in surprise, "There was no class placement test?"
Anno nodded.
Lin Xu immediately looked at her as well.
Xia Meng asked curiously, "Why didn't you take the exam?"
Anno said, "Other things got in the way, and I didn't have time."
Another roommate said, "I heard from the teacher that you can retake the exam. Do you want to retake it?"
Anuo propped her head up with one hand and continued drawing on the paper with the other. "I don't want to retake the exam. I was already at the bottom of the class in the entrance exam, so there's no point in retaking it."
Xia Meng and the others offered a few more words of comfort before turning to ask about Lin Xu's academic performance.
They observed that Lin Xu was always reading, doing homework, practicing listening comprehension, or memorizing vocabulary, whether in the dormitory or the classroom. They almost never saw her touch her phone. Students who could get close to Mingguang High School were all academically excellent.
But Lin Xu was practically the queen of test-taking skills, so they were even more curious about her grades.
After the class assignments were completed, the results were announced. Lin Xu didn't hide it from her roommates and gave them a number that left them speechless.
"Holy crap, these grades are at least in the top ten of the grade!"
Anuo also looked up at her; her grades were the best in their dormitory.
Although she didn't participate much in Xia Meng and the others' conversation, she overheard most of it. Of the eight people in the dormitory, apart from her, the others all had good exam results, and even the worst among them could get into Class 3.
However, only Lin Xuxia, Xia Meng, and another roommate were able to achieve the same academic level as those in Class 1.
Hearing her roommates' praise, Lin Xu gave a polite, faint smile before turning her attention back to her exercises.
Anno drew in the classroom for a while longer, but then she couldn't sit still anymore. The classroom was too noisy, and she felt a headache coming on for no reason. There were no teachers on duty in the evening, and it was mostly students who came to study on their own. She thought about asking Baroque and Tuka to go out for a walk.
As it turned out, neither of them was in class.
I sent a message to Tuka but she didn't reply. Baroque, on the other hand, was in the music room.
As Anno walked towards the music classroom, she passed by other classrooms, and many people stared at her.
Except for the first year of high school, where students are free to attend evening self-study sessions, all students in the second and third years of high school must attend evening self-study sessions, and all of them must do so quietly.
At night, only a few students strolled around Mingguang High School. The school was too big, and many places were unlit. Anuo liked this environment very much. After being exposed to the sun all day, she just wanted to stay in the darkness for a while.
Thinking this, she walked through a rest corridor in the school. Suddenly, a dark shadow darted past her, and Anno immediately became alert.
This speed is beyond the reach of normal humans.
Anno channeled the energy in her hand, and patterns appeared on her wrist.
Sensing the inhuman aura, Anno chased after him.
This inhuman speed was incredibly fast, and Anuo relentlessly pursued him all the way to the Arts and Sports Building.
At the beginning of the semester, most of the classrooms in the arts and sports building were closed, and not many students came to class. Anuo chased the shadow from the first floor to the sixth floor, but could no longer see it.
She sniffed the air, noticing the faint scent of the non-human. She was very sensitive to smells; she could remember the scent of any non-human she had met just once. This non-human's scent was clearly unfamiliar.
Besides his scent, she also smelled a faint odor of blood.
Strange non-human beings are undoubtedly dangerous, because you don't know if they are good or evil. Anuo told her mother about the strange non-human beings that appeared at Mingguang High School.
She is now working at the Special Administration Bureau, otherwise in this area.
Who's there?
Hearing the sound, Anuo turned her head and saw a boy walking towards her in the dim light of the corridor.
"It's you! What are you doing here?"
Huo Xuan looked at the person in front of him with some surprise.
Anno turned off the phone screen and put it back in his pocket. "I'm here to find someone."
"Who are you looking for?" Huo Xuan smiled, a hint of roguishness in his expression. "You're not here to see me, are you? I was just wondering which class that cute little girl was in the other day. I was about to ask her when I saw you here."
Why are you looking for me?
Anuo looked Huo Xuan straight in the eye. "Last time in the cafeteria, you also came to find me after making preparations in advance, didn't you?"
Huo Xuan raised an eyebrow. "How did you know I had made preparations in advance?"
“I guessed,” Anno said. “Now I’m asking you, we’ve never met before, why did you come to find me?”
Huo Xuan: "You're so cute."
Anno: "I'm thirteen years old this year."
Huo Xuan: "..." A strange expression appeared on his face.
"Thirteen years old? Tsk, that's way too young."
Huo Xuan thought to himself, "Brother, really. She's so young. Even if she's pretty, we'll have to wait a few more years, right?"
