Chapter 42 Moving Grain (tushumi.cc)

When Da Ni saw that Grandma Li was about to leave with a broom, she was so frightened that she called out to stop her: "Grandma, I'm fine."

"Hmph! This troublemaker was bound to cause trouble sooner or later. She's been divorced and still won't behave. Let's see how I deal with her!"

Old Mrs. Li's expression was ferocious. She had seen Li Zhenzhen going to see Gou Dan and Er Niu several times in the past few days. At the time, she thought the children were pitiful and tacitly allowed the mother and son to meet. She never expected that Li Zhenzhen would dare to come and confront her so openly.

Right now, they've just blocked Da Ni on the road. Who knows, one day she might kidnap her. She really doesn't trust Li Zhenzhen's character.

When Da Ni saw that her grandmother was going to stand up for her, her eyes were slightly moist. She felt very touched. She thought that her grandmother only liked her three older brothers and not her.

It was still raining outside, and the occasional thunderclaps drowned out their conversation, but didn't attract any attention from others.

The Zhen family had already lit a fire inside the cave. The firelight reflected on Old Lady Li's ferocious face. Her back was facing out of the cave, and in the light of the lightning, she looked just like a deadly demon.

If a passerby were to witness this scene, they would likely be terrified. However, in Dani's eyes, she only felt that her grandmother was so loving. This scene was deeply engraved in her heart and she could not forget it for a long time.

Rumble...

A deafening clap of thunder jolted Da Ni out of her reverie. She suddenly remembered what her aunt had told her, and a chill ran down her spine.

Oh no, how could she have forgotten what her aunt told her to do!

"Grandma, Mom! Quick, quick, pack a few baskets and come with me to find Auntie," Da Ni said anxiously.

With her sharp eyesight, she easily found the baskets even in the dark, put the contents on the ground, and quickly packed up the three large baskets.

"You brat, who are you trying to scare by yelling so loudly?"

Old Mrs. Li angrily scolded Da Ni and quickly snatched the basket from her: "Where are you going in the dark?"

Da Ni was furious with herself. She regretted it so much that she kept hitting her head. She then told Grandma Li and the others about discovering the grain cave. Finally, she told Zhen Wanwan, somewhat unsure of herself, where she was still waiting for them.

This time, not only did Old Lady Li jump up and down in anger, but Wang Cuihua also grabbed Da Ni's arm.

How could you forget something so important!

Ouch~ Da Ni felt a pain in her arm, but she didn't dare to cry out. She had indeed made a mistake, but she felt wronged.

If it weren't for her second aunt's nagging, she would have come back long ago, and she wouldn't know how her aunts and the others are doing.

"Quickly, eldest son's wife, bring the basket and torch over..."

"Da Ni, lead the way..."

"..."

The three of them busied themselves for a while, quickly preparing their things before heading out to find Zhen Wanwan and the others.

Each of them took a torch and carried a large basket on their backs. As Grandma Li followed Da Ni, she muttered curses under her breath, but it didn't slow them down.

"Mother! Where are you going?"

Zhen Wanwan brought her father and several nephews and nieces home. Just as they arrived at the entrance of their own cave, they encountered Old Lady Li leaving, cursing and swearing.

"Milk...we found it..."

"Shh, keep your voice down." Zhen Xiaohu quickly covered his younger brother's mouth to prevent him from saying another word and revealing the secret of the grain.

Grandma Li was startled by Zhen Wanwan's sudden voice. She held the torch forward to see who it was, and only felt relieved after realizing it was her daughter.

"Let's go back and talk about it first."

The Zhen family sat around the fire, and Wang Cuihua brought out dinner, intending to eat and chat at the same time.

"Why haven't the eldest and second eldest brothers come back yet?"

The Zhen family, who had just returned from the grain cave, did not see Zhen Fugui and Zhen Fuyu, and Old Lady Li's heart remained heavy.

Grandpa Zhen felt uneasy holding a bowl of watery wild vegetable porridge, his mind preoccupied with the grains filling the room.

Hearing Grandma Li's question, he smacked his lips and replied, "I was worried about the things over there, so I had the two of them guard them."

Old Mrs. Li understood. She drank her porridge without any appetite, but she was also thinking about the grain she hadn't seen yet. She turned to Wang Cuihua and said, "Eldest daughter-in-law, put the rice for the eldest and second sons in the basket and have someone take it to them later."

Suppressing her excitement, Wang Cuihua happily agreed.

Zhen Wanwan brought up the old topic again: "Dad, what should we do with this batch of grain?"

The whole family remained silent. After taking a small sip of porridge, she continued, "I think we should move enough grain for our own use and then go tell Chief Escort Lin and the others?"

Grandma Li looked around and saw that Grandpa Zhen was frowning and not saying anything. She agreed with Zhen Wanwan's suggestion.

“Wanwan is right, this was found by our family, so we should take it first!” Old Mrs. Li was the first to speak up.

Wang Cuihua sat in the corner, but the light in her eyes was stronger than ever. There were neatly arranged baskets next to her, as if she was waiting for them to give the word so she could immediately go and move the grain.

There were only four adults present; the rest were children who had no say. Three of the four adults agreed to the suggestion, and Grandpa Zhen seemed to be hesitating for no apparent reason.

After waiting for a while, he carefully looked at the people on the scene, and finally said in a firm tone, "Eldest daughter-in-law, pack out everything you can carry. We'll set off at 9 PM. Wanwan will stay here and wait. Hu Zi and Dani will come with us."

The decision was finalized. During this time, Grandpa Zhen went to deliver food to the two Zhen brothers. On his way back, he picked up a bag of grain. When he saw the white rice, Grandma Li knelt down and wept silently, while Wang Cuihua also wiped her eyes.

In the stillness of the night, most people in the cave were fast asleep, but the lights of Zhen's house shone brightly in the darkness, guiding the few people.

After putting the younger children to sleep, Zhen Wanwan pondered how to move the food into her space. This thought lasted until late at night, and finally, her opportunity arrived.

Tiger and Da Ni each carried a basket taller than themselves back home. When Zhen Wanwan saw them covered in sweat, she felt sorry for them.

"Hu Zi and Da Ni, you don't need to go over there. This food is enough for us. You two stay here and take care of your younger siblings. If you get sleepy, just lie down and go to bed. I'll go pick up your grandparents."

Hearing this, Hu Zi smiled and waved his hand: "Auntie, I'm not tired at all. I haven't even carried a few more bags of grain yet!"

The innermost corner of the cave was piled high with bags of food. Tiger and Da Ni felt a great sense of accomplishment, knowing they would no longer have to go to bed hungry!

Sigh! Seeing how sensible they were, Zhen Wanwan felt a pang of sadness. Poor children learn to be independent early. Hu Zi and Da Ni would only be elementary school students in modern times.

She tenderly wiped the sweat from their brows and told them to rest again, but they still wouldn't listen and wanted to follow her.
