The vendor was leaning against the railing, his head swaying back and forth, when he heard someone cursing at him.
Seeing that it was the customer who had bought his donkey a moment ago, he felt a pang of guilt and regretted not running away sooner.
The newcomer was very tall and looked intimidating. Zhen Wanwan and the others quickly made way for him and waited to see what would happen.
The vendor greeted him with a smile and asked, "Young master, is there anything I can help you with?"
The burly man grabbed the vendor by the collar and said angrily, "You have the nerve to say that? We hadn't even reached the city gate with this donkey when it lay down on the floor and refused to move. We couldn't even drag it away."
After finishing his sentence, the burly man gasped, his cheeks turning dark red. He said with some difficulty, "This donkey had diarrhea the whole way. As for our reputation... let's not even talk about it!"
The vendor was really aggrieved and almost cried.
"Be more civilized," the somewhat delicate-looking scholar next to the burly man advised him not to treat others like that.
"Oh dear, I sell my business according to the rules! You have to be reasonable. Even if it goes to the authorities, I still have a point."
The vendor felt utterly unlucky. This stubborn donkey had a terrible temper and needed to be fed and cared for, otherwise it would run away and cause trouble. He always managed to get the items he sold returned. The vendor was really fed up with this stubborn donkey.
After all the cattle, horses, mules, and donkeys had been sold, only this stubborn donkey was left. It took a long time to sell it, but unexpectedly, it was returned to the owner.
Despite the facts, adhering to the principle of sacrificing a friend rather than oneself, the vendor could not agree to its return.
"You're lying to us! I've already found out that this donkey of yours has a problem; it's been returned as many times as it's been sold!"
The burly man glared angrily, while the frail scholar beside him continued to utter uncivilized words.
The vendor feigned ignorance, saying, "I sold it legally, and we've already settled the payment. How can you try to pin this on me?"
The vendor just wanted to sell the stubborn donkey as soon as possible so he could go home and escape with his family. He didn't have time to waste here selling the donkey.
The burly man was also an impatient person. Hearing the vendor's words, he became so angry that he immediately attacked: "Are you going to back up or not! If you dare not back up, my big knife will be on your arm!"
"My lord, calm down. I agree! Please put the knife down."
The vendor forced a smile and agreed to the return, hurriedly pulling out the silver taels he hadn't even warmed yet and handing them to the burly man: "Here's the one tael of silver you gave me. Please count it to see if the amount is correct."
Apart from Zhen Wanwan, Zhen Fugui and the others, who had been watching the commotion from the sidelines for a long time, all gasped when they heard that a donkey had been sold for one tael of silver.
The burly man glared at the group, counted the silver, and left with the frail scholar.
The scholar was still spouting classical phrases, instructing the burly man to be refined.
The vendor sighed pitifully at the stubborn donkey, "What a tragedy!"
How did I end up with this thing?
Seeing that Zhen Wanwan and the others hadn't left yet, the vendor tentatively asked, "Is there anything else, distinguished guests?"
Although the donkey was quite stubborn, Zhen Wanwan still wanted to buy it so that the family could have a livestock errand runner.
Considering the long journey ahead, Zhen Wanwan still asked, "How much is your donkey?"
The others looked somewhat surprised, not expecting that Zhen Wanwan actually wanted the donkey.
Among them, Grandma Li reacted the most.
"Wanwan! Stop fooling around!" Old Mrs. Li pulled Zhen Wanwan aside and turned to apologize to the vendor, "Young man, please don't mind, my daughter is just being silly. You should keep this donkey and sell it to someone else!"
When the vendor heard that Zhen Wanwan wanted to buy something, he was overjoyed and automatically avoided talking to Old Lady Li.
"If this lady wants it, I can give her a 50% discount!" The vendor added, "However, once you leave, you can't return it!"
He really couldn't take this stubborn mule's antics any longer!
Zhen Wanwan raised an eyebrow. If she didn't try to lower the price now, when would she?
"Vendor, we all heard it just now. Your donkey has a problem, and you're selling this sick donkey for five hundred coins!"
The vendor had no way of expressing his bitterness. He had bought the donkey for 500 coins because he thought it was strong and powerful.
"Madam, to tell you the truth, I bought this donkey for five hundred coins back then, and now I just want to get my cost price back. I really don't want to make a penny more than my cost..."
Zhen Wanwan, believing that only a fool wouldn't take advantage of a bargain, naturally tried to haggle hard: "I won't say much more, if you can sell it for three hundred coins, I'll pay right now! If not, we'll leave."
"Oh dear, you..." The vendor frowned. This lady looked quite young, but she was really pushing the price down too hard!
Grandma Li weighed her purse in her hand. Three hundred coins for a strong donkey was a good deal, so she didn't stop Zhen Wanwan from bargaining.
After hesitating for a while, seeing that Zhen Wanwan and the others were about to leave, the vendor finally gritted his teeth and agreed to sell. He figured it was better to lose money than to have his goods stuck with the loss.
After counting the money, Zhen Wanwan exchanged money and goods with the vendor. Zhen Fugui, looking completely bewildered, led the stubborn donkey out the door.
He thought to himself that his sister had changed a lot. In the past, he had been desperate to buy a donkey but didn't have the money. Now that they had just started fleeing the famine, how come his family could afford a donkey?
As soon as Zhen Wanwan and her companions stepped out of the room, the vendor followed them to close the door, grinning and saying, "Goodbye, everyone. Have a good time."
This made Zhen Wanwan wonder if she had quoted too high a price! She regretted speaking so quickly.
The group put their purchases on the cart, which made things much easier. They were very grateful to the vendor for giving them a handcart; otherwise, they would have had to spend more time building the cart on the road.
"Puff puff puff..."
A sudden crashing sound caused passersby to change their gaze towards Zhen Wanwan and her companions.
The donkey has diarrhea...
Looking at the filth on the ground, Zhen Wanwan felt nauseous and regretted not feeding it Kangjinfang sausage when she left the house.
"Oh dear, this place is so dirty... what should we do?" Zhou Dashan said, leaning closer to Zhen Fugui.
The pointing and whispering of those around them made the people present blush. No wonder that burly man insisted on returning the goods.
While the others weren't looking, Zhen Wanwan gave it some antidiarrheal medicine, not knowing if it would work.
But there's nothing else we can do now, so we can only give it a try.
Unexpectedly, the donkey stopped defecating right after taking the medicine, so Zhenwanwan fed it some glucose to replenish its energy.
The group quickly pulled the donkey cart out of the city gate, and fortunately, nothing untoward happened along the way.
"What's wrong with this donkey, sir?" Old Master Zhen asked Zhen Fugui with a puzzled look.
The Zhou family members also gathered around, wanting to hear about what had happened since they entered the city.
They had only been in town for about half an hour, so they still had time to chat for a bit. Now, many people had arrived at the city gate, and they were probably going to leave with the wealthy families in town.
