"This is my little niece's house."
The handsome and refined man looked at the familiar yet unfamiliar courtyard with deep emotion.
"I didn't say in my letter that I would bring you back. Grandpa and Nannan will probably be scared, hehehehe..."
He chatted and laughed mischievously with the people around him.
However, he stood in front of the courtyard, his finger hovering in the air, and hesitated to knock on the door.
In his thirties, he already had a few barely noticeable strands of gray hair at his temples, and the fine lines around his eyes were particularly noticeable in the sunlight.
He took a deep breath and smelled the fragrance he remembered. The osmanthus tree in the yard was still there, even thicker than when he left, and its lush top could be seen from outside the yard.
"Nervous?" Su Ning gently took his hand.
She wore a light blue dress today, which made her skin look even whiter. Her long, black hair fell over her shoulders, and beneath her arched eyebrows were a pair of bright, clear eyes. She looked extremely dignified and elegant.
"It's been almost four years." Bai Yunshu's voice was a little hoarse. "When I left, Nannan had just gotten married. In the photos she sent, the old man's hair had turned even whiter... She's a mother now too."
I, the pillar of this family, have been very irresponsible, placing the entire burden on my daughter. She's still so young, having to take care of both her parents' and in-laws' families, and also go to work…
Su Ning squeezed his palm: "They all miss you and will be happy to see you."
You are serving the country, and they will understand!
Bai Yunshu smiled and shook his head, laughing at himself for missing his family every day when he was away. Now that he's back, he feels a bit apprehensive about returning home.
Finally, she mustered up the courage to knock on the door.
Hurried footsteps came from inside the door, followed by the sound of the door lock turning.
The door opened, and standing in front of them were two little bundles of joy, with their hair tied in high ponytails and wearing the same little clothes. The two looked at them with wary and unfamiliar eyes.
Bai Yunshu's heart suddenly clenched.
These two little dumplings look exactly like his little niece!
"Jinyu? Jingxing?" he called out tentatively, his voice trembling slightly, his chest filled with excitement.
Although he couldn't contact the outside world, he continued to receive letters and gifts from home. Even though he had been away for several years, he still had a clear understanding of what was happening at home.
Da Bao frowned, his gaze sweeping back and forth between the two of them: "Who are you?"
Xiao Bao hid behind his older brother, tugging at his clothes, only his big, bright eyes peeking out as he curiously watched them.
This completely melted Baiyunshu's heart; she was utterly smitten.
He crouched down to be at eye level with them, his smile widening. "I'm your great-uncle..."
"Da Bao, who are Xiao Bao?" A deep, aged voice came from inside the house, followed by slow, steady, and powerful footsteps.
When Bai Yunshu saw her father appear in the hallway, he looked much older than she remembered, with half of his hair turned white, but his eyes were still as sharp as ever, and he looked very healthy. It seemed that her daughter was taking good care of her father.
"Father..." Bai Yunshu's voice choked with emotion.
Grandpa Bai's eyes widened, and the small teapot in his hand fell to the ground with a "clatter".
"Cloud Book?" He trembled as he reached out and rubbed his eyes, afraid he was seeing things.
Bai Yunshu quickly stepped forward and hugged his father tightly.
The familiar scent of the old man brought tears to his eyes. "It's me, Dad, I'm back."
Grandpa Bai patted his son on the back, then noticed that he wasn't the only one who had returned: "Yunshu...you and this young comrade come in first."
The furnishings in the living room have remained almost unchanged, only showing signs of age.
Bai Yunshu felt Su Ning quietly grasp his hand, and he turned to give her a reassuring look.
