As soon as Grandpa Bai and Uncle Bai got off the train, they saw Bai Yajing standing at the door, eagerly waiting.
"Nannan! Here she is!"
The two men walked toward her while calling out to her.
Upon hearing this, Bai Yajing quickly ran over to take their luggage. "Grandpa, Fourth Uncle, we've finally waited for you! Let's go home. Grandpa and Grandma must be getting impatient."
Knowing they were arriving today, both elderly people took leave from work.
"Okay, okay, we'll have to trouble them."
Bai Yajing waved her hand magnanimously, "Hey, Grandpa, Fourth Uncle, we're all family, no need for formalities. Come on, Grandpa Niu is waiting at the door."
"Alright, this old man hasn't ridden in an oxcart in ages. Today I'm finally reliving my youth. Hahahaha."
Uncle Bai was helpless to see the old man so happy, like a child. The old man had only ridden in an oxcart once or twice in his life, and that was when he went to the Kang family to propose marriage. He spoke as if he had ridden in one many times.
When Grandpa Bai saw Grandpa Niu, he was so excited that he went up to him, grabbed his hand, and called him "Brother" repeatedly.
"Brother, we're all old now. Back then, we rode in your oxcart to my in-laws' house. We were all so young then!"
Grandpa Niu was so startled by his enthusiasm that he took two steps back. He sighed inwardly, "My goodness, Mr. Bai is still as unpretentious as ever, and as enthusiastic as ever!"
When I was young, I couldn't handle it, and now that I'm old, I still can't handle it.
Uncle Bai noticed the old man's discomfort and quickly pulled him onto the oxcart. "Old man, sit down first. We can talk on the way."
He then turned to Grandpa Niu with a smile and said, "Grandpa, that's just my temper. He didn't mean any harm."
Grandpa Niu waved his hand repeatedly, "Hey, he was like this when he was young. He would chat with me all the way, and he didn't look down on me because I was a peasant and didn't know how to say nice things. I know all that. Hehehe."
If it weren't for the kindness of Mr. and Mrs. Bai, the younger brother of the Kang family wouldn't have agreed to marry his daughter into the Bai family. Alas! Who would have thought... It can only be said that fate is cruel.
The old man was very happy along the way, chatting with Grandpa Niu from time to time, while Bai Yajing and Uncle Bai would occasionally chime in.
Upon arriving in the village, Grandpa Niu took them directly home.
Knowing that Bai Yajing had already paid the fare, Fourth Uncle secretly left a bag of candy on his seat, knowing that Grandpa Niu wouldn't accept it.
But if he finds out and sends it back, it would be a bit disrespectful, and the old man wouldn't do that.
Bai Yajing and Grandpa Bai both saw it and smiled with satisfaction.
Hearing the commotion, the maternal grandparents quickly came out to greet them.
"Brother Bai! Fourth Brother! Come in quickly!"
"We've made some tea inside. Take a rest first; lunch will be ready soon."
Grandpa took the old man and fourth uncle to entertain them, and Bai Yajing went to the kitchen with Grandma to help out.
Before long, Fourth Uncle went to the yard to chop wood and fetch water. He and his son had come to stay with them; they couldn't just eat and drink for free, could they? The Kang couple would definitely not accept money.
So he did some chores and then bought some things for the house.
My maternal grandparents are very perceptive. They know that if they don't let him do something, they will feel guilty and uncomfortable. So they simply treat each other as a family and help each other with whatever they can.
Bai Yajing brought back some pheasants and rabbits from the mountains these past two days. Her grandmother is a master at making soup, so she added some medicinal herbs to make a delicious and nutritious medicinal meal.
As for the rabbit, Bai Yajing plans to braise it.
Rabbit meat has a strong gamey smell, so after cutting it into pieces, I soaked it for 30 minutes to remove the blood. I also added white wine and ginger slices when blanching it.
Heat oil in a pan, add sugar and stir-fry over low heat until it turns amber. Add ginger slices, garlic cloves, scallion segments, dried chili peppers and spices and stir-fry until fragrant.
Add soy sauce for seasoning, a little white wine to remove any fishy smell, and stir-fry evenly.
Pour in hot water to cover the rabbit meat, bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to low heat and simmer. Finally, add salt and pepper to taste, reduce the sauce over high heat, and garnish with chopped green onions.
