Chapter 62 Returning Home (2/2)

Grandpa Bai chuckled and waved his hand, "Hey, this old man won't go with you. Don't worry about me, your fourth uncle will take care of everything."

Even if things don't go well, there are so many neighbors around now, what's there to be afraid of? Go back home in peace. Come back whenever you miss Grandpa.”

He wouldn't be so selfish as to force the child to stay with him. The elderly Kang couple only had their daughter as their last bloodline, and he was in a similar situation. So, putting himself in their shoes, he couldn't let the elderly couple experience the emptiness of having no one to care for them. At least he still had a dutiful adopted son by his side.

Bai Yajing saw that he didn't want to go, so she didn't force him. She knew that the old man felt guilty towards his maternal grandparents and always felt ashamed to face them...

Uncle Bai gently patted her head, saying, "My dear, don't worry about us. Uncle Bai is here to take care of everything."

Go back and spend some quality time with Uncle Kang and Aunt Kang. Call me if anything happens. If you want to come back, I'll buy you a ticket.

"Okay, I understand."

That was settled. That very evening, Uncle Bai brought back the train ticket and the food he had prepared for her on the train.

He also put a lot of thought into preparing Shanghai specialties for his maternal grandparents.

Grandpa Bai took out a radio and handed it to her.

“Your grandparents used to love watching plays and listening to storytelling when they were young. They don’t do those things anymore. Bring them a radio so they can listen to the radio and listen to songs.”

He sent one to Bai Yajing before, but it's been several years and it's probably broken by now.

Bai Yajing didn't stand on ceremony with them. Knowing their good intentions, she thanked them on behalf of her grandparents and accepted the gifts.

"Alright, I'll take them. Once I go to the mountains to hunt some game and make some cured meat, I'll send it over for you to try."

"Okay, okay, but don't go deep into the mountains, it's dangerous. Just wander around the outskirts, we have plenty of food at home."

"It's getting late, go and get some rest. Your fourth uncle and I will take you to the station first thing tomorrow morning."

Knowing that this girl had been going up the mountain with her maternal grandparents to catch rabbits, pheasants, and dig for medicinal herbs since she was little, they weren't worried.

"Okay! I've prepared some medicine for you. Take it. As long as you don't die, it will keep you going for an hour. After that, you can go to the hospital. It's like a lifesaver for the King of Hell."

The problem is that the medicinal herbs are scarce. I only have two left. You can each have one, and I'll process them and send them to you once I find the rest.

As she spoke, she slipped a small white jade medicine bottle to each of them.

Neither Grandpa Bai nor Uncle Bai wanted it; she had to pretend to be angry with a stern face to get them to accept it.

With her not here, I always feel like things might not be peaceful later on, so I need to provide them with enough security to feel at ease.

She had already washed up and was now carrying the radio back to her room.

The next morning, Uncle Bai prepared a sumptuous breakfast. After the family ate, Uncle Bai drove her to the station.

The old man kept reminding her of things to pay attention to along the way. Uncle Bai also added to the instructions from time to time.

Bai Yajing listened quietly, occasionally responding with a few words—a testament to the deep affection and care an elder has for a younger generation. She would remember it all.

She also gave the two of them some instructions.

Once inside the train, I found my sleeper compartment. My fourth uncle is so thoughtful; I finally don't have to smell stinky feet or hear the incessant noise anymore.

The soft sleeper is different; it's very quiet the whole way, and everyone in the same carriage is busy with their own things.

Some were reading books, some were reading newspapers, and some were resting. Bai Yajing was also happy to have some leisure time, reading books and taking naps. Soon it was time to go.

When I got off the train, my grandfather was already waiting outside the station.

"Grandpa, I'm back!" Seeing the familiar tall figure, she ran over happily.
