Chapter 441 One Wave Subsides, Another Rises (1/2)

"Absurd! If you want to find fault, you can always find a reason! No one knows Xiao Che's character better than me. He's so busy every day that he even has to squeeze in time to eat!"

These State Security personnel can all testify! You say he took the money to do bad things, where's the evidence? Even without evidence, did he have the time? Huh?

Director Mu remained unmoved by her questioning. "Comrade Bai, when a man wants to cheat, he will do everything he can to make it look perfect!"

Bai Ya laughed in exasperation, slamming her hand on the table. "Why does Director Mu seem so experienced? Could it be that you do this all the time?"

Director Mu was speechless at her words and didn't bother to say anything more. He simply left with the words, "That's the truth. You'd better think carefully about how to explain yourself!" and then patted his behind and left.

Bai Yajing was so angry she almost punched him, but she held back.

Bai Yajing returned home holding her breath.

She slumped onto the sofa, Director Mu's words replaying in her mind. The dates, amounts, people, and locations were so precise; it seemed the other party had come prepared and wasn't afraid of her investigation...

The knocking sounded again, but everyone in the family had gone out.

She had no choice but to drag her weary body to the door. Standing outside was a strange man, around forty years old, dressed in an ordinary Zhongshan suit, but exuding an air of nobility and elegance in his every move.

"Comrade Bai?" The man smiled. "I'm Wu Zhiyuan, Xiao Che's old classmate and former comrade-in-arms. May I come in and have a chat?"

Bai Yajing looked at him warily: "My husband is currently...unavailable to receive guests."

"I know," Wu Zhiyuan nodded. "That's why I came."

Driven by some kind of intuition, Bai Yajing turned her eyes and opened the door.

After entering the house, Wu Zhiyuan briefly looked around the simple and elegant living room, his gaze lingering for a moment on the photo wall.

"Your home is very warm and welcoming," he said after sitting down. "It's all thanks to you. Xiao Che isn't a family man at all; in his eyes, the country comes before everything else."

"Comrade Wu seems to know my husband very well?" Bai Yajing poured him tea and sat down opposite him.

She had never heard Xiao Che mention Wu Zhiyuan before, so he was clearly not an important person.

Wu Zhiyuan smiled bitterly, then sighed: "He definitely hasn't mentioned me to you."

That's true. When the Xiao family got into trouble back then, my family didn't get involved in order to protect ourselves. All those years of friendship were ultimately gone.

Let me be frank. Xiao Che's matter is not as simple as it seems on the surface.

Bai Ya suddenly asked, "What do you mean?"

"The Tangzhou disaster relief funds are just a pretext," he said in a low voice. "Someone wants to use this opportunity to get back at him because he was in their way."

"Who? Why would they do this?" Bai Yajing was in a state of mental turmoil. She didn't know whether the person in front of her could be trusted, nor did she know who was behind it.

Grandpa Xiao didn't tell her, clearly not wanting her to act impulsively.

"The Ministry of State Security is about to be reorganized. As the minister, his abilities over the years are evident to all. He is the next Minister of the Legislative Affairs Commission chosen by the higher-ups to be in charge of the rule of law."

Wu Zhiyuan looked at her meaningfully, "You understand."

(Sorry, I can't write it)

Bai Yajing felt a wave of exhaustion. Having such an outstanding partner wasn't necessarily a good thing!

She was somewhat resigned to her fate: "Then... what can we do?"

At that moment, she began to believe what the other person said. She had figured out a similar conclusion herself; it was simply that she had blocked someone's way.

"Now that the Discipline Inspection Commission has intervened, there's no point in confronting them head-on." Wu Zhiyuan took a slip of paper from his pocket. "This person might be able to pass on a message for you. But remember, once you start down this path, there's no turning back."

Bai Yajing frowned as she took the note. It contained a name and phone number, but nothing else.

She looked up, wanting to ask more, but found that Wu Zhiyuan had already gotten up and was preparing to leave.
