Chapter 163: Searching for Food
Liang Jingyao lifted his robe, placed the chopped bamboo tube on it, and said, "Your hand is injured, so don't dig too much. I'll find a way to go down to the cellar and take a look later."
Lin Xiaoyue nodded and said, "Okay, I know."
Next, Lin Xiaoyue bent down and dug ten bamboo shoots from the ground, and also broke off several bamboo branches with dense bamboo leaves that could be used to store washed food.
Returning to the fire, she cut a hole with a knife, quickly peeled off the shell, and then cut off the back stem. "Brother Liang, you should wash these too. When I walked over here, I saw the plots of land you planted before. I thought there would be food there."
Liang Jingyao looked up at the mountainside not far away and said, "Wait for me for a while, I'll go with you."
Lin Xiaoyue nodded and said, "Okay, then I'll pick up some more wood, otherwise the fire will be out by the time we get back."
"Be careful!" Liang Jingyao reminded him worriedly, picked up ten bamboo shoots and walked towards the river.
Lin Xiaoyue walked back to the ruins and picked up a lot of dry broken wood. She had to cook soon, so she decided to take more, as it would be difficult to find it after dark.
Suddenly, Lin Xiaoyue saw several crushed porcelain jars. She quickly squatted down and looked inside, and found that they were the dried radishes she had dried herself!
She was so happy as if she had found a treasure. She carefully threw the porcelain pieces aside, picked out all the dried radishes and took them back to the fire.
Liang Jingyao saw Lin Xiaoyue coming back with something like a treasure and asked curiously, "What are you holding?"
Lin Xiaoyue put a large pile of dried radishes on the ground and said, "These are the dried radishes we dried. I found them when I was picking up wood!"
Seeing Lin Xiaoyue's smile return, Liang Jingyao's mood also improved. "Well! It's good that it's still there! I'll wash it and dry it again later, and it should be edible."
Lin Xiaoyue tore off a piece of her skirt and wrapped up the dried radish. "That should be fine. Let's go to the mountainside to find something to eat!"
Liang Jingyao didn't have much hope for the land. It hadn't been taken care of for a long time, and the weather was getting cold so quickly, so he estimated that not many would survive.
But Lin Xiaoyue wanted to go and take a look, so Liang Jingyao didn't refuse. He put his arm around Lin Xiaoyue's waist, flew over with a light skill, and the two of them landed steadily on the mountainside.
Lin Xiaoyue was no longer afraid of Liang Jingyao flying around with her. "Oh, it's all deserted! Let's go look for it! Maybe there are still some sweet potatoes."
She let go of Liang Jingyao's clothes and walked around the fields. Sure enough, there was almost nothing growing on the ground. The only thing she could find was sweet potatoes! She dug out some sweet potatoes and picked a lot of sweet potato leaves. She picked everything that was edible.
Seeing that Lin Xiaoyue was feeling a little disappointed, Liang Jingyao comforted her, "It's okay. Isn't there still the cellar to check? If the food in the cellar is gone, I can send someone back to Yangming Town to buy some. It's just a little trouble, but you won't go hungry."
Lin Xiaoyue held the sweet potatoes and sweet potato leaves and said, "This is the only way. Let's go back first."
Liang Jingyao put his arm around Lin Xiaoyue's waist, flew up, and landed smoothly next to the fire. "I'm going to wash the sweet potatoes. You sit down and rest for a while."
Lin Xiaoyue couldn't sit still any longer. She found a piece of wood and rinsed it in the river, then brought it back to the cutting board.
There were only ten winter bamboo shoots, so she cut them into large pieces and placed them on bamboo branches. Then she walked to the river and brought back the sweet potato leaves that Liang Jingyao had washed.
Sweet potato leaves are not only edible, but also rich in nutrients. Lin Xiaoyue picked the sweet potato leaves again before cutting them, then cut them into sections and put them together with the bamboo shoots.
At this time, Liang Jingyao had already washed the sweet potatoes and brought them to Lin Xiaoyue. "If you feel hungry, you can roast some sweet potatoes first. I'll take someone down to the cellar to check."
Lin Xiaoyue didn't want to eat alone. These sweet potatoes were cooked and left for everyone to eat. Even if she was very hungry, she would wait until everyone finished their work before eating together.
"I'm not hungry, you go and check on me." Lin Xiaoyue knew that sweet potatoes cook slowly, so she filled each bamboo tube with water first, because there would always be people thirsty and coming to drink water.
Then put the sweet potatoes into a large iron pot and start cooking.
As the sky grew darker, the temperature in the valley dropped. Fortunately, Lin Xiaoyue was sitting by the fire, otherwise she would have been freezing.
Elsewhere, Liang Jingyao walked into the ruins of the bamboo courtyard. He stood at a spot based on his instincts and shouted, "Come here! Let's take away the top. I want to go down and see what's happening in the cellar."
"Yes!" All the Cheetah Army came running and worked together to move the broken branches and walls that were pressing on top, revealing a big hole in the cellar on the ground.
Liang Jingyao happily shouted to Lin Xiaoyue: "Yue'er! I found the cellar!"
Lin Xiaoyue ran over after hearing the noise, looked down at the cellar expectantly, and said, "It really is a cellar! Brother Liang, wait for me a moment."
"What's wrong?" Liang Jingyao looked at Lin Xiaoyue strangely, wondering what she was going to do?
Lin Xiaoyue took out the tinder, squatted on the ground, and reached down with her hand holding the tinder. Seeing that the tinder was not extinguished, she stood up with confidence and said, "Okay, you can go down."
Liang Jingyao didn't know why Lin Xiaoyue did this, but he firmly believed that Lin Xiaoyue did this for his own good, so he didn't ask any more questions, took the tinderbox from Lin Xiaoyue's hand and walked down the cellar.
With the light of the tinder, Liang Jingyao carefully checked the cellar. It was such a big cellar, and the grains, vegetables, and fruits stored in it were still there!
He carried two large pieces of meat and a bag of rice and walked back to the ground. "Fortunately, everything is still there! I have everything I need to eat for the next few days. I don't have to go out to buy food."
Lin Xiaoyue took the meat and said happily, "That's great! I guess that arrogant and incompetent General Hussars wouldn't care if it wasn't gold, silver, or jewelry. Emperor Liang might not even know there's a cellar here! But it's a good thing for us!"
Liang Jingyao nodded and said, "Yes! Let's go back and cook. We'll have meat for everyone tonight!"
The Cheetah Army felt their stomachs rumble as they listened, and responded excitedly, "Okay! Okay!"
Lin Xiaoyue carried the meat to the fire, scraped the pig skin with a knife, and then took out a handful of dried radish wrapped in a cloth. She handed all these things to Liang Jingyao and said, "Brother Liang, these need to be washed. Especially the dried radish, be careful of the porcelain debris inside!"
Liang Jingyao took it and replied, "I know. I'll wash the rice later, and you can cook it with the sweet potatoes in the pot. Conditions are limited right now, and you still have several dishes to prepare, so just do whatever's convenient for you."
Lin Xiaoyue also had the same idea. It would take a lot of time to stew meat!
She nodded and agreed: "Okay! I will do as Brother Liang says!"
After Liang Jingyao left, Lin Xiaoyue ran to the ruins to look for a pot. Originally, the kitchen in the bamboo courtyard had two large iron pots, a small pot, and a stove. The stove was probably no longer usable, so she hoped that one of the pots could still be used!
