Chapter 24: The County Magistrate is a Sixth-Class Man
Lin Xiaoyue was standing at the door, and right in front of her was the county magistrate Wu Zhongkui, but because she was invisible, Wu Zhongkui and the officers around him did not notice her.
"Keep whipping me, whip me hard!" Wu Zhongkui handed the whip to the officer beside him. He was tired of whipping after whipping for so long. Now he still wanted to stand there and watch. After enduring such a long time, he finally felt relieved!
Once a person's pent-up anger is relieved, he will feel refreshed. Wu Zhongkui's sallow face actually became rosy. He stretched out his arms and tried to take the whip from the officer's hand, but his legs went weak and he almost fell to the ground.
The officer was so frightened that he quickly held Wu Zhongkui's arm and said, "County Magistrate, you've been standing outside for too long. Let me help you go in and rest!"
Wu Zhongkui was terrified. Did he really fall because he couldn't stand? Why did he feel a force from behind hitting his calf? Was it the evil spirit in front of him that was trying to harm him?
Thinking of this, he couldn't stay any longer, so he shook off the officer's hand and said, "It's okay! You guys continue to smoke here, I'll go in by myself, I can still walk!"
The officer clearly sensed the displeasure in Wu Zhongkui's tone and stopped following him for fear of being punished.
But the hidden Lin Xiaoyue was laughing so hard that she bent over. In fact, it was she who hit Wu Zhongkui's calf with a stone just now. Wu Zhongkui had indeed been standing for too long in the morning, resulting in poor blood circulation in his legs, so she succeeded so easily!
Following Wu Zhongkui back to the bedroom, Lin Xiaoyue found a place to sit down. She estimated that Wu Zhongkui would need some time to accept the pile of things on the bed.
As she expected, Wu Zhongkui wanted to sit down after entering the room, but he saw a big bundle on the embroidered cushion. The cloth wrapped on the outside was old, and it was obvious that it was an old bed sheet from somewhere. Half of the letter was exposed at the knot of the bundle. Who could have put it there?
Wu Zhongkui picked up the letter and read it. A sword made him a marquis? He set fire to and killed bandits? Now he wanted him, the county magistrate, to help him distribute things?
"Tsk, what is this? How can I distribute such a small package? Even though many people are running away or dying in Dongyuan Town, there are still many families left!" He threw the things on the embroidered cushion to the ground while cursing. The live chicken in the big package was frightened and made a "clucking" sound.
Lin Xiaoyue couldn't sit still. She wondered how Wu Zhongkui had managed to pass the imperial examinations and become a county magistrate. How could he not understand a letter like this? Or was he simply too old to understand?
She was so angry that she walked over and kicked the curtain on the bed. The curtain was partially lifted, revealing the small bundles piled up like a hill on the bed.
Wu Zhongkui thought it was the wind that blew the curtain and didn't care. What puzzled him was that he would open the curtain every morning when he woke up, so why was it closed today?
And what was in there? He was always very clean and never left anything on the bed!
Is there a thief?
"You bold thief!" He shouted angrily and suddenly pulled open the curtains on both sides, but was stunned by the scene before him!
His bed was filled with small bundles. The chickens and ducks in the bundles were frightened, and the bed was filled with the sounds of "cluck, cluck...quack, quack..."
Wu Zhongkui was really confused. He remembered the letter he had thrown away, so he picked it up and read it again. Now he finally understood.
It turned out that all these things were put there by the man called Yijian Fenghou. The big bag he threw away was given to him as a thank-you gift, and the things on the bed were what he was supposed to distribute to the common people!
He quickly picked up the big bag on the ground, carried it to the table and opened it. He saw a chicken, a whole killed fish, a large piece of pork, a silver ingot, a bag of cloth and a bag of salt inside.
"Hmph, you're quite sensible! But I'm not attracted by what you gave me. I'm the official of Dongyuan Town, so I gave it to you!" He happily stuffed the silver into his arms. He still feels the pain of giving Chen Maowu a piece of silver yesterday, but he didn't expect to get a silver ingot today!
It seems that good people are rewarded!
After putting all the edible items on the table in the kitchen, he went outside the yamen to call the officers. There were more than 200 packages of things on the bed, and he couldn't carry them all by himself!
Outside the yamen, the officers began to slack off when they saw that the county magistrate was not there, and they whipped him sporadically.
Suddenly, a shout came from behind their heads, "All of you get in here!" They were frightened, thinking that they were discovered by the county magistrate for being lazy.
Just as they were nervously approaching the county magistrate's bedroom, the magistrate pointed at his bed and said, "Good news! A martial arts master named Yijian Fenghou has moved all the belongings from the bandit's den down the mountain. Go outside and inform the people. Each household should send one person to come to me to collect them."
The officers were very surprised and stretched their necks to see clearly what was in the county magistrate's bedroom. After all, they also had a share there.
"What are you looking at? Get out of here!" Wu Zhongkui shouted.
The officers ran away one by one.
Lin Xiaoyue stood beside Wu Zhongkui, smiling very proudly. She never thought that she had become a martial arts master, and that the county magistrate could talk!
Having said that, although the county magistrate likes to speak in an official air, he is still a good man. When it comes to serving the people, he is not vague at all.
Next, Lin Xiaoyue left the yamen with peace of mind, because Chen Yunyun was still outside and she would be anxious if she couldn't find her, and she also wanted to tell her the good news!
Sure enough, Chen Yunyun had been looking for her in the crowd. As soon as she appeared, Chen Yunyun grabbed her hand, tears almost streaming down her face. "Sister Lin, where have you been? I couldn't find you and I was so worried. It's getting late. We should go home for lunch. Dad's stewed chicken must be ready by now."
Lin Xiaoyue smiled awkwardly and said apologetically, "Yunyun, don't be angry. I just felt uncomfortable watching this, so I went to find a toilet. I feel much better now, but we can't go back yet."
Chen Yunyun looked at Lin Xiaoyue worriedly and said quickly, "Sister Lin, are you still feeling uncomfortable? How about I go see a doctor with you? This might be because the bad luck here is too strong and it's weighing on you."
Lin Xiaoyue shook her head and said with a smile, "Don't worry, good will prevail over evil. I'm fine now. Just now, when I came out of the toilet, I heard the officer say that the county magistrate would give us some things, one for each family, so let's take the things before we leave."
Chen Yunyun asked curiously, "What is it? Did they tell me?"
Lin Xiaoyue thought for a moment and said, "It seems like a martial arts master came from somewhere. He brought down all the things that the bandits had looted from the common people. Now they are in the county government office. The county magistrate is going to distribute them all to the people here."
Chen Yunyun asked in surprise, "A martial arts master? Could it be the legendary flying knife master?"
"Knife-thrower?"
Lin Xiaoyue was bewildered. Who could that be? His name was too ordinary, not as handsome and domineering as her own, "One Sword to Become a Marquis."
