Chapter 205 Full of Doubts

Luo Jingyan still couldn't get the truth from Xue Yanchen. Even if adding metal to the soles could indeed make them more durable and puncture-resistant, what was the point of adding other things? Besides, there was more than one type of metal being added.

Just as Luo Jingyan was about to investigate further, Zhao Jun ran over carrying a pheasant.

"Brother Chen, I caught a pheasant. We'll have meat to eat now."

Seeing that Luo Jingyan was also there, he said, "It's perfect that Luo, the educated youth, is here too. How about we roast this chicken right here?"

Luo Jingyan really enjoys picnics, but she's not in the mood right now.

Zhao Jun caught the pheasant; she had no right to approve or disapprove.

"OK."

Seeing that Luo Jingyan seemed to have something on her mind, Xue Yanchen wanted to cheer her up, so he agreed.

"Speaking of which, I think food grilled outdoors tastes better than food made at home. Regardless of the taste, at least the feeling when eating it is different."

"Let's do it right away."

Zhao Jun carried a small knife with him, which he could use to kill chickens. He even took out two paper packets from his pocket.

"What's inside the paper package?" Xue Yanchen asked.

"Salt and chili powder."

"You really are preparing to make roast chicken."

Zhao Jun smiled and said, "Isn't this a habit we had when we were in the army? We always carried seasonings such as salt and chili powder with us. If we went to the wilderness, we would bring as many seasonings as possible. If we couldn't find food, we could just use whatever we had on hand and sprinkle some seasonings on it to eat."

"No wonder you wanted to roast pheasant here. It turns out you were prepared all along. Tell me the truth, did you plan to hunt pheasant in the mountains and roast it beforehand, and that's why you specially prepared the seasonings?"

Zhao Jun smiled and said, "I did prepare in advance. I prepare almost every time I go up the mountain. I never used it before, but I didn't expect to catch a pheasant today."

When roasting pheasant, the feathers will burn off naturally, so there is no need to pluck them. Instead, you should first clean out the contents of the pheasant's belly.

Zhao Jun called out to Xue Yanchen, "Brother Chen, help me hold these two chicken legs, I'm going to gut them."

Xue Yanchen and Zhao Jun were busy killing chickens, while Luo Jingyan watched from the side. "While you're killing chickens, I'll go gather some firewood."

She found some dry branches nearby and piled them up.

After Xue Yanchen and Zhao Jun finished killing the chicken, Zhao Jun found a sturdy wooden pipe and threaded the killed chicken through it.

First, he rubbed the pheasant inside and out with salt and marinated it for about twenty minutes. Then, Xue Yanchen lit a fire and used a wooden stick to roast the pheasant over the flames.

Roast chicken should not be cooked over high heat, otherwise the outside will burn while the inside remains uncooked.

Therefore, it must be baked slowly over low heat.

The pheasant had only been roasted for a short while when all its feathers were burned off. Under the intense heat, its skin began to sizzle and ooze oil. Each drop of oil that fell onto the burning firewood below would ignite a small burst of sparks.

The pheasant's skin gradually turns from white to golden yellow, making it look very tempting.

Zhao Jun held the wooden stick, and when he got tired of grilling, Xue Yanchen took over and grilled for a while. The two of them turned the wooden stick countless times and carefully checked the grilling of the pheasant meat several times. Finally, after grilling for more than half an hour, the pheasant meat was cooked and taken off the rack.

While the pheasant was still warm, Zhao Jun sprinkled salt evenly on it again, and also added chili powder.

After Xue Yanchen finished sprinkling the seasonings, he snatched the pheasant away, pulled off a chicken leg, and handed it to Luo Jingyan.

Luo Jingyan took the chicken leg, Xue Yanchen removed a chicken wing from it, and then returned the chicken to Zhao Jun.

Luo Jingyan only ate one chicken leg. After she finished it, Xue Yanchen gave her more chicken, but she couldn't eat anymore.

Because the pheasant was too fat, its body was covered in sizzling oil, and there were no vegetables or fruits to eat with it, even with water, it tasted rather greasy.

Xue Yanchen, however, thought she was preoccupied and still unhappy.

It took the three of them more than an hour to kill and roast the chicken, but less than half an hour to eat it.

The whole chicken was eaten, with Zhao Jun eating the most. Their hands were covered in oil, so Xue Yanchen and Zhao Jun simply found two trees and rubbed their hands on the trunks to remove the oil.

Luo Jingyan carried toilet paper with her. She used the toilet paper to wipe herself clean. She had offered it to the two people earlier, but they refused because they were afraid of wasting it.

It was still early before sunset, and Luo Jingyan wanted to ask Xue Yanchen some questions, but it was inconvenient with Zhao Jun present.

Zhao Jun probably realized he was being a third wheel for the young couple, so he smiled and pointed to the other side, saying, "I'm going to wander around over there. If you want to come, we can go together; if you don't want to, I'll go by myself."

Before Xue Yanchen could speak, Luo Jingyan said, "We're not going, you go."

"Alright, I'm leaving."

After Zhao Jun left, only Xue Yanchen and Luo Jingyan remained.

Xue Yanchen had a gut feeling that Luo Jingyan seemed to have something to say to him, and he had a bad feeling.

"Jingyan".

Luo Jingyan pointed to a place with water nearby and said, "Yanchen, come with me for a walk over there."

"good."

As the weather warms, the snow on the mountain gradually melts, turning into flowing water that runs down the mountain rocks. Several smaller streams merge together as they go down, forming a larger stream.

When Xue Yanchen saw the water, he subconsciously looked at his palms. His hands were covered in oil stains after eating roast chicken. He rubbed them against the tree a few times, but only most of the oil stains were removed. Some oil stains were still left on his hands, so he could use this water to wash them again.
