Chapter 42 Refusal to Make an Effort

"I want to go, let's go together."

Luo Jingyan called Luo Changtian, wanting to finalize Luo Changtian's schooling arrangements today.

After leaving the girls' dormitory, Luo Changtian called out at the entrance of the boys' dormitory and came out.

"Sis, what's up?"

"I want to finalize your school arrangements. Are you going to go?"

"I'll go."

"Sister, I'm going to put on some clothes."

"Go quickly."

The Forward Brigade and the Victory Brigade are adjacent, with only a few meters or four feet between the villages. Now that the crops in the fields have been harvested and there are no crops to cover the fields, they can see the houses of the Forward Brigade as soon as they go out.

Twenty minutes later, they arrived at the Forward Brigade. Luo Jingyan still didn't know where the Forward Brigade's school was, so she had to find someone from there to go with her.

She immediately thought of Xue Yanchen.

He told them to come to him if they needed anything, and she decided not to disappoint him and see if he had time.

The three of them arrived at the educated youth settlement of Qianjin Brigade. Jiang Manyue was overjoyed to see Li Hongmei and hugged her.

Luo Jingyan didn't see Xue Yanchen in the yard and was hesitating whether to ask Li Hongmei to take them to school when she suddenly heard Luo Changtian say, "Sister, I'll go see if Brother Xue is here."

"Okay, go ahead."

Xue Yanchen was sitting in his dormitory reading a book when he saw Luo Changtian arrive. He quickly put down his book and went over to him.

"Xiaotian, did you come with your sister?"

My sister is outside.

They went outside together, and Luo Jingyan said, "Brother Xue, there is no school in our brigade. I want Xiaotian to go to school here. I wonder where the brigade headquarters and school are here?"

"I'll take you there." If anything happens, he can help resolve it.

Luo Jingyan told Jiang Manyue, and the three of them went out together.

Following the captain's instructions, Luo Jingyan found the brigade headquarters, where there were people.

She gave the letter of introduction from the brigade leader to the local Party secretary. After reading it, the Party secretary reached out to her and asked, "Where's the letter of introduction from the commune?"

Luo Jingyan was momentarily confused. "Uncle, is it not acceptable without a letter of introduction from the commune?"

The Party Secretary shook his head: "You are from another village and are also educated youth, so you must have a letter of introduction from the commune. I can leave this letter of introduction here for now, or you can take it back later. You can only go to school after you get the letter of introduction issued by the commune."

"Uncle, could you please make an exception for me?" Xue Yanchen said.

"There's no room for compromise. This is the policy from above, and no one can change it."

Money makes the world go round. Luo Jingyan reached into her pocket, pulled out a pack of Daqianmen cigarettes, and handed it to the Party Secretary: "Uncle, I came in a hurry and didn't bring you any valuable gifts. This is just a small token of my appreciation. Please accept it."

The Party Secretary declined, saying, "Young comrade, don't force me to make a mistake. I can't accept your things. Don't think I'm deliberately making things difficult for you; this is really a policy set by higher authorities, and I have no choice."

He wasn't the only cadre in the village; there was also the brigade leader, the accountant, and several squad leaders. While they were polite to him on the surface, it was hard to say whether any of them truly respected him. They probably all wanted to remove him from power as soon as possible. If they caught him doing something wrong, he would have to obediently step down.

Luo Jingyan realized that this was a tough customer. Indeed, sometimes gifts simply wouldn't work, and the only option was to get a letter of introduction from the commune.

"Alright then, Uncle, thank you for your trouble."

After leaving the brigade headquarters, Xue Yanchen said, "I'll go to the commune to get a letter of introduction."

Luo Jingyan, being a young girl, was afraid that she would be harassed by the people in the commune.

"I can't accept that, it's too much trouble for you, Brother Xue," Luo Jingyan said.

"There's nothing to be embarrassed about. Don't worry, I'll definitely get it done for you."

Fearing that Luo Jingyan might feel burdened, he continued, "I think you still have to take care of Xiaotian, while I don't have anything to do, so I can take the opportunity to visit my relatives in the county."

"Alright then, Brother Xue." She took out ten yuan, two coupons, and the pack of cigarettes from her pocket and handed them to Xue Yanchen: "Brother Xue, you might need these."

"Take it back." Xue Yanchen refused to take it. "I don't need these things."

"I mean, just in case."

"Trust me, there's no 'what if'."

Seeing that she refused to put the money back in her pocket, he reached out and put it back for her. The moment their fingers touched, they both paused slightly. Luo Jingyan unconsciously shifted her gaze to the side, and then turned her face back.

"Thank you, Brother Xue. If you ever need my help in the future, I will definitely do my best."

“Me too.” Luo Changtian smiled.

"Okay, I'll definitely need your help in some way." Xue Yanchen smiled.

Luo Jingyan handed him the pack of cigarettes: "You can have this."

Xue Yanchen waved his hand: "I don't smoke."

Do you drink alcohol?

Luo Jingyan subconsciously asked this question. It's probably because the words "smoking" and "drinking" are often put together. When you talk about smoking, you think of drinking, and similarly, when you think of drinking, you naturally think of smoking.

The man nodded: "Sometimes I drink a little." He's the kind of person who can drink without getting drunk.

"Then I'll treat you to a drink sometime."

"good."

The three of them returned to the educated youth settlement. After a while, Luo Jingyan and Luo Changtian left with Jiang Manyue.

On the way, they saw Zhang Hongxia carrying manure. Before Luo Jingyan could ask, Jiang Manyue said, "It's true that you get what you pay for. She's dishonest, and she's already been punished after only a short time here."
