When Luo Jingyan and Old Mrs. Xue arrived at Commander Lu's office, Xiao Wang brought them steaming hot tea.
Twenty minutes later, Commander Lu returned to his office after the meeting.
After meeting, Luo Jingyan told Commander Lu why they had come and took out the tape recorder from her bag.
"Comrade Commander, this is a recording I made myself. Please listen to it."
She turned on the recording, and as it played, the commander's brows gradually furrowed, becoming increasingly tighter, and his expression grew more and more somber.
Even though he had been in a high position for a long time and his calm and dignified demeanor was already natural, the shock and anger in his eyes when he heard the contents of the recording were still obvious.
Luo Jingyan noticed that his hand was initially placed casually on the coffee table, but as the recording played, his hand gradually gripped the corner of the coffee table, tightening its grip until the veins on the back of his hand became clearly visible.
After the recording finished playing, Luo Jingyan pressed the recorder switch. Immediately afterwards, Commander Lu slammed his hand on the coffee table. He clenched his teeth and remained silent for the moment, his burning gaze fixed on a corner of the room, as if trying to calm himself down.
It took him a while to come to his senses.
He said to Luo Jingyan and Old Madam Xue, "To be honest, I never believed that Yanchen would do something so absurd, but I'm currently struggling to find evidence to prove it. What I never expected, and what pains me the most, is that those greedy people would use this method to attack our soldiers who defend our country. If it weren't for these soldiers fighting bravely, shedding blood and sweat, how could our country and people be safe?"
However, some people, after living in peacetime for a long time, forget how they came to enjoy their peaceful and prosperous life. They only think about themselves and are willing to harm those who have protected and helped them for a little bit of profit.
"Comrade Luo, could you leave the tape recorder behind? I'll let the other leaders listen to it too, and then secretly send people to that village in the south to conduct an investigation."
"Can."
Luo Jingyan fears that once Division Commander Li learns of this, he will make plans to disrupt the Army Commander's investigation.
"Comrade Commander, there's something I have to tell you first. Actually, I've already suspected someone, and I think it's possible that he's the one secretly orchestrating this."
"You mean?" He had also heard about Li Xue pursuing Xue Yanchen through his lover. Could it be because of this?
"The person I'm talking about is Commander Li, because Yanchen told me that Commander Li had gone to him and said that my medals, certificates, and thank-you letters were not enough to get me discharged, advising him to retire on his own and asking Yanchen to write a discharge application. When Yanchen asked him for my medals, certificates, and thank-you letters, he made excuses, saying they were with the leadership. If the leadership didn't agree to my discharge, why was he withholding those things? So, Yanchen suspected he had ulterior motives. However, the very next day, Yanchen was framed."
There's something else I don't know if you know. I heard from people here that Commander Li's daughter has taken a liking to Yan Chen and is pursuing him. Yan Chen will definitely not agree to her. It's a matter of face for Commander Li and Comrade Li Xue, so it's understandable that Commander Li might do something to Yan Chen.
All of these events happened one after another, and they all seemed too coincidental, so Commander Li couldn't help but arouse suspicion.
I know that publicly questioning my superior carries consequences. If the investigation proves that Commander Li is unrelated to this matter, I am willing to bear the responsibility for falsely accusing him.
“Little Lu, I was the one who first suspected Commander Li. If he wasn’t the mastermind behind it all, then I will take the responsibility,” Old Madam Xue said firmly.
The old lady was deeply moved that her granddaughter-in-law was willing to sacrifice herself for her grandson.
“Suspicion is not false accusation, it’s not that serious,” Commander Lu waved his hand and said. He was silent for a while, then said, “Your certificates and medals are indeed not with me. I thought Division Commander Li would hand them over, but there has been no movement from him, and the political commissar doesn’t know about it either. But he lied to Yanchen and said that the things were with us. Old Li is too good at lying.”
He narrowed his eyes and said, "Aside from that, if Commander Li really abused his power and bribed others to frame Xue Yanchen, that would be truly disheartening." He said to Old Madam Xue and Luo Jingyan, "I understand what you mean. I will not let Commander Li know about this matter. I will only discuss it secretly with the political commissar and will never let a word out. As for taking responsibility, we'll talk about that after the investigation results are out."
After Luo Jingyan and Old Madam Xue left, Commander Lu only discussed the matter with the political commissar of the military region, and then naturally sent his trusted subordinates to the village in southern Yu Province where Xue Yanchen had done the mission to investigate the specific situation.
Three days later, after recuperating in the hospital and drinking Luo Jingyan's spiritual spring water, Xue Yanchen had recovered 70% of his health. He believed he could be discharged the next day.
The past three days have been calm, yet turbulent beneath the surface.
In order to keep Commander Li in check, Commander Lu and the political commissar of the military region adopted a strategy of feigning one move while secretly sending people to investigate the village chief and Zhang Jinfeng's family. On the surface, they discussed the matter with Commander Li and sent people to investigate as well, but two of these people were Commander Li's subordinates.
Because Xue Yanchen was under the command of Division Commander Li, who undertook most of the investigation tasks.
During these three days, Commander Li could not be said to be completely at ease, but at least he was not too worried about the possibility of an investigation result that would be unfavorable to him.
That afternoon, the four-person investigation team sent out by the leaders returned, bringing back an old woman and a hoodlum. Both of them were from that village, and they said they had seen Xue Yanchen beating Zhang Jinfeng, but they just watched it as entertainment and did not report it to their superiors.
