Chapter Forty-Five: The Medication Incident

Qin Xiaoniang smiled with satisfaction, finished her mung bean cake, and then got up to take care of the other children.

After Song He'er finished brewing the medicine, she sent it over bowl by bowl.

Su Yu's wife's two children are quite young, so it's a bit difficult for them to take medicine; they vomit some of it after every two bites.

"I can't get this medicine to go in, what should I do?"

Li Qiang's wife suggested from the side, "Why don't we... just give it to him directly?"

"What if such a young child chokes if we force-feed them?"

Li Qiang's wife shook her head speechlessly. "Then what do you suggest we do? Nian'er and Huahua have both obediently taken their medicine, but your family won't. If you don't force them to take it, won't the medicine lose its effectiveness and become ineffective once it cools down?"

Su Yu's wife is usually indecisive, and with this delay, the medicine has gone half-cold.

Li Qiang's wife couldn't bear to watch any longer. She snatched the medicine bowl, pinned the child under her arm, and forced him to drink the entire bowl of medicine.

Perhaps because it was too bitter, the children vomited some of the medicine, and thick medicinal juice ran down their necks, making them cry even more.

Su Yu's wife was heartbroken for her child. Seeing Li Qiang's wife so roughly forcing medicine down her throat, she was very displeased and went straight over to snatch the medicine bowl from her.

"What are you doing? You've made the child choke!"

"Didn't you drink it down? With the method you used, you wouldn't finish a bowl of medicine even if you fed it until tomorrow morning."

Su Yu's wife's eyes reddened, and she continued to retort indignantly, "I'm going to feed him slowly. This isn't your child, so don't you care? Look at him now, how badly he's coughing..."

Li Qiang's wife was completely enraged by these words. She stood up from the ground and yelled at Su Yu's wife, "Why do you say that to me? Why do you have the nerve to say that I don't care about the child? Have I treated you badly? I came to help you because I felt sorry for you not being able to feed the medicine and for the child not recovering for a long time. It's like a dog biting Lü Dongbin, not recognizing a kind heart."

"You...who are you calling a dog! Tell me!"

"If I say you're a dog, then you're a mad dog, a mad dog that bites people indiscriminately when cornered!"

The noise from their argument quickly frightened the two children nearby, causing them to burst into tears.

Qin Xiaoniang had just coaxed Nianjie to sleep and fed Zhang Xiue her medicine when she turned around and saw the two of them arguing fiercely.

She sighed and walked directly towards the two of them.

The two children sat on the ground crying loudly, but the two parents ignored them and continued arguing.

"What are you two arguing about? You've scared the child like this!"

Su Yu's wife felt extremely wronged and couldn't wait to tell others about Li Qiang's wife's mistakes.

“Little sister, look for yourself, I couldn’t get the medicine down my throat, and when Tian Niangzi came to help me, she picked up the child and tried to force-feed him the medicine, which almost choked the child to death. Tell me, how could I not argue with her?”

Li Qiang's wife interrupted her aggressively, "Pah! You're ungrateful! This little bit of medicine could kill your child? Tell me honestly, how have I treated you? I only helped you because I saw your child suffering. If I'd known you were this kind of person, I wouldn't have even glanced at you if you were dead in the street!"

Qin Xiaoniang pulled Li Qiang's wife aside and told her to stop talking.

"You too, speak more quietly, the children are all asleep, why can't you change this habit?"

"Change? Change what? That Su Yu girl is a blockhead. Look at her, is she even speaking human language? Of course I can't be polite to her!"

"Alright, you stay here for a bit, I'll go take a look."

Qin Xiaoniang comforted Li Qiang's wife and moved her to Hua Hua's side, then turned back.

Su Yu's wife was wiping the soup off her child's clothes, crying as she did so.

Qin Xiaoniang was speechless for a moment, then snatched the handkerchief from her hand and advised, "Zhou Niangzi, we are on the road to exile now. It doesn't matter if our clothes are a little dirty. The most important thing is that the child is healthy. Although Li Qiang's wife is rough, she is not a bad person at heart. Look, didn't she make your son drink the medicine obediently?"

Su Yu's wife continued to cry beside him, which annoyed everyone.

Qin Xiaoniang already had one of the best tempers, but seeing her like this, it was hard not to get angry.

"Stop crying. All you do when you encounter problems is cry. If crying could solve problems, then everyone in the world would just cry whenever they encounter difficulties!"

Su Yu's wife wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes and finally spoke, "I just feel sorry for the child, I didn't mean anything else..."

"Although you didn't mean anything by it, what you said was very hurtful. We've been through thick and thin together, and it hasn't been easy for us to get to where we are now. There's no need to argue like this over such a trivial matter. You should calm down. Only when you calm down can you both understand your own mistakes."

After saying that, Qin Xiaoniang was about to leave.

“Young lady! I…I did nothing wrong…” Su Yu’s wife called out to her from behind.

Qin Xiaoniang stared at her for a long time before slowly speaking: "If you think you're right, then I can't persuade you anymore. Tian Niangzi also thinks she's right, but it's wrong for the two of you to quarrel. I need to go back to take care of the children and Zhang Niangzi. You two can resolve this yourselves."

After saying that, Qin Xiaoniang didn't give Su Yu's wife any chance to argue, and turned around and left without looking back.

Song He'er and Chun Di, who were not far away, could see everything clearly.

However, due to their status, they couldn't persuade them. Li Qiang's wife and Su Yu's wife were both servants in the General's Mansion, while Song He'er and Chun Di were the masters. If they spoke up, it might be seen as favoritism.

On the other hand, Song He'er also felt that Li Qiang's wife was right. They were on the run, and as long as they could survive, who cared how they drank the medicine!

Song He'er was worried about her mother's health, after all, she had been taking care of the patient for six or seven hours straight without even closing her eyes.

Just then, she walked over to Qin Xiaoniang's side, took the handkerchief from her hand, and said, "Mother, go to sleep. I'll take care of things here."

"No, you're already tired enough."

“I’ve already slept. Huan’er hasn’t been held by his mother in a long time. If you collapse from exhaustion, how pitiful would Huan’er be?”

Song He'er knew that her child was her weakness; if she talked about her child, she would soften nine times out of ten.

Sure enough, Qin Xiaoniang breathed a sigh of relief, put down her things, stood up, and replied, "Don't concern yourself with Zhou Niangzi and Tian Niangzi's affairs. They've argued more than once or twice. Let them think about what they should be doing right now..."
