The officers glared impatiently at the child and shouted sternly, "What's all the noise about?"
"Sir...over there! Someone has drowned!"
"So what if someone drowns? What's the big deal?"
"But...but..."
"But what? Get out of here, all of you behave yourselves!"
After saying that, the officers and soldiers lay down under a large tree next to them to rest.
When Song He'er saw them doing nothing, she felt angry. Why did they have to do all the dirty and hard work while she lived a comfortable life?
There is no such thing as a permanent solution in this world; if one has no immediate worries, one will surely have distant troubles.
Sooner or later, she will get rid of these parasites completely, so that they will no longer be restricted by others on their journey.
"Fifth Sister..."
Song He'er was startled by the sound and turned around to see Li Qiang's wife standing behind her, holding the child.
"What's wrong?"
"Hua Hua said that the person in the water was wearing something that glittered with gold..."
Song He'er was somewhat surprised: "Something that's glittering with gold? A gold ingot?"
"It doesn't seem like it. I heard them say it's long and square!"
Strange, how could someone drown in a stream in this desolate wilderness? Besides, the stream is only a foot deep!
"Madam Tian, take me there quietly, so the soldiers don't find us!"
Li Qiang's wife nodded.
Song He'er followed her to the stream. There, where the water was flowing rapidly, there was indeed a man in a silk robe lying on a rock. In the bundle on his body, there seemed to be a square golden object.
"Fifth Sister, the person might not be dead! Should we save them?"
Song He'er originally didn't want to meddle in other people's business, but seeing the strange appearance of this person, she wondered if he was being framed, or perhaps... there really were bandits lurking on this mountain.
"Madam Tian, did anyone notice us coming?"
Li Qiang's wife shook her head: "No, your stepmother is looking after Huan-ge'er. The steward Su Yu's wife and your third aunt are gathering firewood and cooking corn, so they can't keep an eye on things here right now..."
Song He'er nodded. She knew Su Yu's wife well; she was honest and kind, and had been working in the General's Mansion for over ten years. She wasn't a gossipy woman.
"I'll go check on you. You stay here with Huahua and wait for me."
"Um."
Song He'er rolled up her trouser legs and slowly walked into the water...
As Song He'er approached the rock, she suddenly realized that the man seemed to still be breathing, but he had suffered a head injury that left him unconscious.
Song He'er quietly took out a ginseng from her spatial storage, broke it in half, and stuffed it into the man's mouth.
Then, using the force of the current, they pulled him to the shore, broke off a large tree branch from the side to block him, and after a few struggles, a book wrapped in gold foil fell out of his bundle.
Song He'er was somewhat surprised. What kind of book was so precious that it was wrapped in gold paper?
A gentleman loves money, but he acquires it in a proper way. Although Song He'er is not a gentleman, she would never accept ill-gotten gains. Just as she was thinking this, she stuffed the book back into the man's bundle.
But after much back and forth, the gold paper was torn, and the words 'business' could be faintly seen inside.
Doing business?
She remembered that when she first entered the book, Song Chanxing threatened to strip her naked because of a business book, and that book eventually disappeared. Meeting her here today, could it be...?
With one burst of energy, Song He'er tore open the gold paper on the outside of the book, and in an instant, the four large characters 'Business Secrets' came into view.
Further down the page, at the end of the book, the character 'Qin' was clearly written...
This is the original owner's book!
Song He'er's maternal grandparents' family name was Qin, and they had been merchants for generations. This book must have been passed down from their ancestors, otherwise such words would not appear at the end of the book.
Song He'er hid the book in her bosom, checked his breathing again, and only after seeing that his breathing was steady did she get up and leave, deciding to make some hot soup for him to drink.
Once his body warms up, he'll wake up, and then we can ask him some questions...
Thinking of this, Song He'er got up and walked to Li Qiang's wife's side.
“Madam Tian, it’s alright now. He’s just a passing merchant. He probably fell and is a little unconscious. He’ll wake up and leave on his own in a bit.”
Li Qiang's wife was very well-mannered and knew not to ask questions she shouldn't. Seeing Song He'er say this, she could only nod and follow her back.
When the two returned to their unit, those few incompetent soldiers had already eaten and drunk their fill and gone to bed early.
Qin Xiaoniang noticed that her daughter's trousers were wet and hurried over to ask, "Where have you been? Why are your trousers all wet?"
"Oh... I'll go to the stream and see if there are any shrimp!"
"There were shrimp, but those soldiers ate them all. Oh, my bad mother, she wasn't careful enough..."
As she spoke, Qin Xiaoniang took an ear of corn from the pot next to her: "Eat this!"
Song He'er nodded and took the corn. "Mom, give me the earthenware pot. I'll go dig up some wild vegetables to make soup for us."
"No need, it's getting late, and I'm worried about you walking so far alone..."
"Mother, this corn is too hard. The children's stomachs feel uncomfortable after eating it. They need to drink some soup to feel better."
"Then I'll go with you!"
"What if sending too many people wakes up the officers and soldiers?"
