Chapter 19
Su Ming was quite angry this time, and became much quieter after they were separated into different cars.
Fang Xiaoyu made some efforts, but to no avail, and couldn't think of a better way, so she could only put it aside and hope that time would allow people to gradually adapt.
She reassured the eldest princess to continue wearing the sun hat, and then changed her into a special Elizabethan collar.
The eldest princess remained docile, showing no signs of agitation, and often silently watched the two of them with her round brown eyes. Perhaps sensing Fang Xiaoyu's predicament, she would take every opportunity during parking to try and build a friendly relationship with Su Ming.
Especially when Fang Xiaoyu was pushing the care packages to the roadside and Su Ming was carrying things behind her, he would always quietly go over and use his head and back to help reduce the weight.
Su Ming didn't notice at first.
The second time the fur rubbed against my leg, my body froze and I couldn't move.
The third time was even worse; the water tank hit his instep directly, causing him to lose his voice from the pain.
Fang Xiaoyu felt helpless, knowing that the eldest princess was innocent, but she still added a leash to keep it on a leash and often stood between the two of them to prevent it from going near the people who were afraid of dogs when she wasn't paying attention.
Su Ming's fear of dogs was something others couldn't truly understand, but he could also sense the princess's goodwill, leaving him with mixed feelings.
He rationally knew the problem lay with himself, but he couldn't control it or overcome it, so he could only choose to stay away, which also distanced him from Fang Xiaoyu.
One insisted on keeping the eldest princess, while the other was so frightened that he was unable to move normally.
The relationship between the two was like a spider's thread suspended in mid-air, seemingly broken but not quite, yet still shimmering in the sunlight.
The camaraderie among teammates here is being tested, while there are also instances of life and death separations over there.
There are many accidents on the highway. Some people die in car accidents during chases, some die from hunger and heatstroke after running out of food and unable to find supplies, and some die from their own actions.
At 7:00 a.m., the red car mentioned earlier continued on its way while the soundproof wall was still in shadow. On the side of the road, they saw a thin person lying on the ground, facing one side of the wall, his life hanging in the balance.
The female driver screeched to a stop, but before she had even come to a complete stop, the honest man opened the car door and rushed over.
Taking advantage of the female driver's inattention, he lightly kicked her with his foot. Without much force, the person who was turning to the side flipped over.
He knew the conclusion at a glance.
The person is gone.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the female driver get out of the car. He bent down, checked her breathing, and touched her neck and chest. He turned back with a heavy expression: "No breath, no pulse, and her heart is no longer beating."
The female driver, terrified by the corpse of another human, took two steps back, unable to bear looking any longer: "What should I do? I can't let him... just lie like this in the middle of the road, can I?"
The honest man glanced at the roadside and said, "This trash can isn't big enough; it probably won't fit."
The female driver couldn't believe her ears and was so disgusted she almost vomited: "He's a person! How could you throw him in the trash can?!"
The honest man realized he had said the wrong thing in front of the goddess and apologized repeatedly: "I'm sorry, I didn't think before I spoke... This highway isn't suitable for burial, and we can't waste the fuel in our car."
The female driver, reminded by him, subconsciously said, "Let's use gasoline. There are a few cans left in the trunk, that should be enough."
The honest man advised, "Running the air conditioner consumes a lot of fuel; you should reconsider."
The female car owner frowned: "It's okay, fire, cremation doesn't require much fuel."
Seeing that he couldn't persuade her, and remembering her sensitivity to smells, the honest man changed his tune, saying, "The smell when it's burning is also very strong; you won't be able to stand it."
The female driver felt nauseous again and stepped back a bit: "Then what do you suggest we do?"
The honest man noticed the stone steps and changed his tune to a nicer one: "Let's do a sky burial."
The female driver looked at him in confusion, then noticed the motionless feet on the ground and quickly looked away: "What sky burial?"
The honest man smiled amiably, and seeing that she wasn't looking this way, he straightened his lips and spoke in his usual gentle and magnetic voice, with a seductive quality: "I carried him up the stone steps, and... returned him to the sky and nature. It's a kind of sky burial."
He knew he was talking nonsense; a real sky burial isn't like that. But he also knew the female car owner had never heard of what a real sky burial was, so he felt free to make things up.
Seeing the female driver's blank expression, he felt a surge of smugness and continued, "Look how long we've been stuck on this road! He'll only be stuck here longer. He must be dreaming of leaving this place. If we help him out, it'll be like fulfilling his wish, won't it?"
The female car owner felt something was wrong, but it also made some sense. There was no better solution at the moment, and it would be even worse to drag it out, so she agreed, feeling a little guilty: "I'm sorry to have made you work so hard."
The honest man seized the opportunity to express his loyalty: "Yuanyuan, I'm willing to do anything for you."
The female car owner, whose real name is Cheng Yuan, did not object to him calling her by her nickname this time. She just turned her back and said, "When you come back, give me the clothes you're wearing, and I'll wash them for you."
The honest man behind her had an exaggeratedly distorted smile, his voice filled with gratitude, but what he said was a refusal: "No need, no need, it's just a piece of clothing, you can just throw it away later, how could I let you do this?"
As he spoke, he lifted the body off the ground.
He didn't carry the deceased on his back as he said he would. Instead, he coldly glanced at the multiple knife wounds and bloodstains on the man's clothes, grabbed him by the back of his collar, and dragged him along the ground.
However, after dragging it for only two steps, the dragging sound became too obvious, so he changed from dragging to carrying it, as if it were a sack.
After Cheng Yuan finished speaking, she realized that she had acted impulsively and regretted it for a moment. However, she thought that it was a hard and stressful job, and that he had made this choice to appease her. She should be grateful and consider it a kind of exchange. So she decided to keep her promise.
She breathed a sigh of relief at being rejected in an instant and walked down the stairs: "When we find a new service area, I'll give you some space to put your things, and you can bring a few more clothes."
"You're so good to me." The honest man's voice and footsteps faded into the distance as he began to climb the stone steps. Carrying an adult up the steps seemed to be tiring him, and he was still panting as he spoke.
Cheng Yuan dared not disturb her any longer and waited in place for a while. After a few seconds of silence, she couldn't resist her curiosity, turned around, and looked up.
She saw the honest man throw it forcefully, and the dark shadow fell.
I also saw him standing there, and I thought he was feeling sad for his fellow human beings.
Sensing the gaze from below, the honest man turned around, the wind blowing through his slightly long hair, obscuring his eyes.
“The view up there is beautiful,” he said. “Yuanyuan, I suddenly feel so relaxed.”
She felt a little strange and inexplicably uneasy. When the person came down, she saw that it was still the same person, honest and kind. Apart from being a little slow and lacking in boundaries, he did nothing wrong. She laughed at herself for being too sensitive and for having too many prejudices against him.
The honest man got back into the car and said he was thirsty.
For the first time ever, Cheng Yuan poured him a cup of tea. He took it, drank a sip, and then uttered those cheesy love words: "The water Yuan Yuan poured is so sweet."
This was one of the things she couldn't stand about him. From the very first word, Cheng Yuan was shocked and got goosebumps all over. Just then, she saw that he was about to change his clothes, so she naturally pretended not to hear him and turned her back to walk away again.
The honest man changed into his new clothes, threw his old clothes into the trash can, and returned feeling refreshed. Perhaps it was the new clothes that brought him a good mood, or perhaps he was used to being attentive to others. He wanted to pour Cheng Yuan a glass of water as well, so he asked for her glass.
"No need to thank me, I've already poured it," Cheng Yuan refused directly.
Before pouring him water, she had already filled a thermos with hot water, which should have cooled down a bit by now and was ready to drink.
As she took the cup, she casually sat in the driver's seat. Afraid of burning herself, she carefully took two sips, and finding it acceptable, took two more sips before finally putting the lid back on.
"Come on up, let's drive for another half hour and then take a break."
The honest man said, "Why don't I drive and you take a break?"
Learning from his past mistakes, just like how he had previously concealed his ability to drive, Cheng Yuan didn't want to argue with him over such a trivial matter. She readily switched to the passenger seat, and as the car started moving, the body vibrated slightly. The unchanging scenery, coupled with the fatigue from driving all night, made her eyelids slowly grow heavy, and finally, she gently closed them.
In an open trash can, far behind us, lay a few dirty clothes and an opened, used medicine bag, with words like "before bed" and "sleep aid" still faintly visible.
