The aroma of shepherd's purse and pork dumplings wafted out.
The children playing outside Lao Hua's yard smelled it and became extremely greedy.
"Chi Bao's family is eating dumplings!"
“It smells like meat!”
“And shepherd’s purse!”
"Wow, I want to eat dumplings too!"
"Have you forgotten the last time you were beaten by your parents?"
Hearing this, the children who had similar experiences shrank their necks and dared not speak.
But some smart people started to think of a solution: "Even if we don't have meat, dumplings are good. Why don't we go dig some shepherd's purse and take it home? If my parents are happy, they will definitely want to make dumplings!"
A group of friends suddenly realized: "Yes, that makes sense."
They did it right away. The group of little kids scattered and hurried home to get baskets to dig shepherd's purse.
We had dumplings today. Lao Hua’s family had dinner early, and the smoke from other families’ kitchens hadn’t even started to rise yet.
The little kids took the baskets from home and ran out.
The adults called out, "Dinner is almost ready, why are you running outside?"
"Digging shepherd's purse!"
For a moment, the adults felt a little relieved that their children had grown up and knew how to dig wild vegetables to add to the family's food, so they just let the children play around.
Although shepherd's purse is best suited for making dumplings, it is not inedible even if it is not used for making dumplings. At least it is not bitter.
If you ask where there are the most wild vegetables, of course it’s in the fields!
The crisscrossing ditches and canals beside the fields are perfect for growing wild vegetables, and now there are large patches of wild celery growing there.
But the children's target was shepherd's purse.
“Over there, I saw a lot!”
"Hurry up, hurry up, or they'll strangle you!"
The scene of a group of little kids squatting on the ground digging wild vegetables is quite spectacular.
Suddenly, a faint humming sound came from the field.
The one with sharp ears raised his head: "What's that sound!"
There was another groan, as if someone was crying.
"Wow! There's a little doll here!"
The child who crept over saw the smaller child and immediately started shouting.
A group of little kids came running over upon hearing the noise, and looked curiously at the baby lying by the ditch.
"He looks just like my newborn brother!"
"My sister is only two months old and she looks like this!"
"Why isn't it nursing next to its mother?"
"My parents must have forgotten about her! They often forget my sister in the fields when they get home! Luckily, I'm smart, hehe, and I always bring my sister home!"
The children looked at each other, and finally thought of one person.
"Chi Bao!"
"Chi Bao said that if you find an unwanted child, give it to her!"
"Let's go, let's go find Chi Bao!"
A group of children picked up the baby on the ground, put it in a basket, and prepared to carry it to Lao Hua's house.
Wu Muxiang happened to be going to visit her aunt. When she passed by here and heard the baby crying, she couldn't help but say, "Who brought their younger brothers and sisters out to play? Aren't you afraid that your parents will beat you?"
The little kids started to argue: "These are not our brothers or sisters. We found them in the fields!"
"Picked it up?"
Wu Muxiang immediately understood that it was not uncommon for baby girls to be lost these days, and many babies were already dead when they were found!
"Where are you going with this found child?"
“Go to Lao Hua’s house and give it to Chi Bao!”
Wu Muxiang had heard that everyone said that Lao Huatou's granddaughter Chi Bao was the reincarnation of a Bodhisattva. She roasted sweet potatoes from her own garden every day and fed them to others, and even gave the sugar from her body to other children. If this wasn't a Bodhisattva, what was it?
But this Bodhisattva was somewhat mocking. Whose child could be so foolish? Only the old Hua family.
However, Lao Hua's family is well-off, so they naturally have no shortage of sweet potatoes. They don't feel sorry at all for giving them to their child, and no one thinks there is anything abnormal. At most, they sigh that this family really dotes on their child.
But compared to the famine of previous years, it felt a bit wasteful. Even if the leftover sweet potatoes were fed to pigs or dogs, no one would share them with others like a bodhisattva, unless they were relatives, friends, or gifts.
Wu Muxiang thought, Chi Bao was only two years old, it was okay for him to eat something, it would be eaten by someone else anyway, not thrown away.
But can a two-year-old adopt a baby?
She thought it was unlikely. The Hua family had no shortage of children, so why would they raise a child of unknown origin for no reason?
This baby was sent to Lao Hua's house. If Lao Hua refused to accept it, these kids would probably just throw the baby away without knowing the seriousness of the matter and without understanding anything.
After all, this is a life.
Thinking of this, Wu Muxiang said, "Can you give me this doll? My Gui'er just needs someone to keep her company!"
Since Wu Muxiang was not very popular in the village, the children of her enemies were unwilling to play with Fang Guier, and the children of her friends would not give up their group of friends for Fang Guier.
So Fang Guier was always the one left behind, but fortunately she had some good classmates at school.
The children shook their heads: "No, no, give it to Chi Bao! Give it to Chi Bao, and he can have candy!"
Wu Muxiang took out a handful of candy from her pocket and said, "Can I exchange it for candy? Two candies per person in exchange for this child!"
The children agreed.
Because Hua Wanchi only gave one candy, and not everyone got one, but Widow Wu gave two, so they made a profit!
"You can take the doll away, but I can't give you the basket!"
Now that my basket is gone, I’m bound to get beaten when I get home.
Wu Muxiang came to her aunt's house with her child.
When Mrs. Wu saw her niece holding a child, she was confused: "Whose child is this? Why are you holding it in your arms?"
