Chapter 17 Heatstroke

A passion ignited in Hua Wanchi's heart, but this passion only lasted for three seconds. Sometimes, people have to succumb to reality.

The cruel reality is that Hua Wanchi is still breastfeeding and can't do anything.

She tried to make an effort, clenched her fists, and screamed. Hua Wanli smiled and picked her up, saying:

"Sister, you're so cute!"

Hua Wanchi: Okay, the effort failed.

While Zhou Yujiao was taking a nap, Hua Wanli helped her take care of the baby. Although she said she was taking care of the baby, she was actually just playing. As an adult in spirit, Hua Wanchi was still able to control herself from crying or making a fuss.

After playing with Hua Wanchi for half the afternoon, Hua Wanli went to the fields with mung bean soup and brought an extra bowl with her.

In the golden waves of rice, only the bent backs of the rice harvesters could be seen. Hua Wanli stood on the ridge of the field and shouted:

"Grandpa! Grandma!"

The two figures stood up straight and looked towards Hua Wanli.

Wan Qingliu called out from afar, "Lili, what are you doing here?"

Hua Wanli waved: "Grandma! I brought mung bean soup!"

Zhu Yu also stood up and looked at Hua Wanli. Hua Wanli saw him and waved at him.

Zhu Yu smiled innocently and walked towards Hua Wanli.

Hua Wanli handed him the bowl, poured him a spoonful of mung bean soup, and asked:

"Is there anyone else in your educated youth compound who wants some mung bean soup?"

Zhu Yu thought for a moment and said uncertainly, "Maybe, but we don't have any mung beans, and no one is willing to cook them."

There was one more thing he didn't say, which was that not all educated youth were rich.

In later generations, Gan Province was unremarkable, but at that time, Gan Province was a prosperous place. It was prosperous not because of anything else but one thing: food.

The reason educated youth were sent to the countryside was simply because the city couldn't afford to support so many young people, so choosing a place where they could get enough food was crucial. Jiangxi Province was a popular destination.

To be able to come here as an educated youth was either due to good luck or a family with connections. Generally speaking, those with connections were not in bad shape. But for those who were lucky, it was not always the case.

Zhu Yu was assigned to Gan Province through his family's connections, so he was not short of money. So when he saw the mung bean soup and wanted to drink it, he thought of exchanging money for a bowl.

Hua Wanli watched Zhu Yu drink the mung bean soup with a smile and asked:

"Is it delicious?"

Zhu Yu savored it for a moment and nodded, "Delicious, sweet!"

The smile on Hua Wanli's pretty face became even brighter. "Go back and ask the other educated youth. If they want to drink, they can come. It's five cents a bowl. You can come and drink for free."

Yes, this is Hua Wanli’s purpose.

When Zhu Yu came to her and explained his purpose, Hua Wanli's mind started to work. She felt that this was a business opportunity.

Mung beans are 50 cents a pound, and brown sugar is 60 cents a pound. They're just hard to find, but that's not a problem for her family. A pot of soup like this only requires half a pound of mung beans and half an ounce of brown sugar—just enough to give it a sweet taste.

There were more than ten educated youth in the village, and each of them earned five cents, which meant fifty cents for ten people. She could sell a pot of soup a day and make a net profit of twenty-two cents. It was hard not to be tempted by such a profit!

As for whether or not this would constitute speculation, Hua Wanli didn't care. She had been with her grandmother since she was a child, and she had seen this kind of thing before.

Since speculation and profiteering didn't kill, burn, or harm society, there was nothing wrong with it. On the contrary, it was precisely these four words, which everyone avoided, that allowed her family to live a good life.

Besides, she was just selling mung bean soup, not reselling scarce goods, so as long as no one took it seriously, it would be fine. Even if someone took it seriously, she would just deny taking any money.

When Zhu Yu heard Hua Wanli's plan, he couldn't help laughing.

Perhaps this girl's family was well-off, which is why she had such an idea. Most educated youth could barely get enough to eat, so who would spend money on a bowl of unnecessary mung bean soup?

But when he heard the three words "no money", Zhu Yu's heart was in turmoil and his face turned red.

His slightly shy gaze lingered on Hua Wanli's sunburned cheeks for a moment. He turned his head away hurriedly as if burned, then not daring to look at her again. He put down the bowl and turned back.

He swallowed the cold truth back into his stomach.

"I'll go back and ask them."

After Zhu Yu left, Wan Qingliu and Hua Tiansheng came over. They turned their heads to look at Zhu Yu's departing back, then turned back.

Wan Qingliu asked curiously, "Are you planning to change your partner?"

Hua Tiansheng had just swallowed a mouthful of mung bean soup when he choked and started coughing after hearing these words.

Hua Wanli smiled and said, "I'm only 17, which is the right age for adventure. It's still too early to get married."

Upon hearing this, Hua Tiansheng glanced at Wan Qingliu silently, and the latter felt guilty for a moment.

Most people at that time would not say such words. Only someone who had traveled to the modern era would say such strange words. It is obvious who Hua Wanli learned this from.

Wan Qingliu didn't say anything because he felt guilty. He drank the mung bean soup and wiped his mouth.

"Well, 17 is indeed too early."

In modern times, 17 is still a child, a high school student, full of innocence. Unlike now, when teenagers are expected to be sensible. According to the trends Wan Qingliu knew, there would be many opportunities in the future, and it was indeed the right time for Hua Wanli to venture out at her age.

It didn't take much time to drink the mung bean soup. After a few seconds, the two of them were ready to go back to work. It was really not a job for a human to work in the afternoon when the sun was at its hottest.

At this time, a scream came from not far away, and everyone put down their sickles and ran over there.

Hua Wanli looked over there and asked, "What happened over there?"

Wan Qingliu and Hua Tiansheng also ran over. Looking at the situation, they guessed that someone had suffered from heatstroke.
