But it was too late.
The situation on the battlefield was reversed in a flash.
The battle was over in just ten minutes.
The scorpion escaped with the help of a smoke bomb.
The rest of the Gray Wolf Squad were all wiped out.
Lei Shuangcheng bent down and picked up the scorpion badge. "That old dog, Fernan, has stretched his claws too far."
Renault walked over quickly and said, "Hurry up and move on. The second wave of attacks may come at any time."
At dusk, everyone arrived safely at the cliff where the car was parked.
Renault and his group of fourteen people still got into the three off-road vehicles they came in.
The Thunder Guards and the Shi Family's Secret Guards also boarded the disguised transport vehicles and dispersed in three different directions.
Three off-road vehicles drove towards Yuncheng.
Lei Shuangcheng held the steering wheel intently, his eyes occasionally scanning the rearview mirror.
In the passenger seat, Renault took out four sandwiches from the bag and turned to hand them to Shi Heng in the back seat.
"Fill your stomach first."
Lei Shuangcheng glanced at the packaging and asked, "Where did it come from?"
"Thunder Trident prepared it."
Shi Heng took it, tore open the package, and handed the portion with more ham to Gu Youran.
He asked Renault, "How do you plan your next trip?"
Renault swallowed the food in his mouth and said, "Let's go to pay respect to Grandpa early tomorrow morning."
Gu Youran clenched the sandwich in her hand, "I want to go too...Grandpa Lei loved me the most when he was alive."
Shi Heng put his arm around her shoulders and pulled her closer to him, "I'll go with you."
At eleven o'clock in the evening, the convoy drove into the urban area of Yuncheng.
The two teams separated.
"We're staying at the Yuncheng Dijing Hotel."
Renault rolled down the car window and said, "Meet in the lobby at 8 o'clock tomorrow morning."
Shi Heng nodded to indicate that he understood, and then their car turned towards the Emerald Bay community.
Mark and four bodyguards moved into Shi Heng's apartment.
Shi Heng followed Gu Youran back to her residence.
Pushing open the familiar door, Gu Youran stood at the entrance in a daze for a moment.
The furnishings in the living room remained unchanged.
Even the half-opened book on the coffee table remained in the same state as when they left.
"What are you thinking about?" Shi Heng stood behind her.
Gu Youran turned around and looked into his deep eyes, "Thinking about our flash marriage... It seems like it was just yesterday."
Shi Heng chuckled softly, his fingers gently stroking her cheek, "Youbao, are you...remembering our wedding night?"
Mark's booming voice suddenly came from the door, "Boss! What's the WiFi password?"
The ambiguous atmosphere was broken in an instant.
Shi Heng shook his head helplessly.
Gu Youran laughed and fell into his arms.
…
The other side.
In the top-floor suite of Yuncheng Dijing Hotel, the sound of water in the bathroom gradually subsided.
Lei Shuangcheng was folding the combat uniforms of the two men.
Suddenly, a letter slipped out of Renault's coat.
The words "Handwritten by Xiao Yunjian" on the envelope made him pause.
Just as he was about to put the letter back into his pocket, the paper slipped out.
He glanced at the contents of the letter, his breathing quickened and his heart beat faster.
His eyes were fixed on the last words, "One life, one death," and his knuckles turned white from the strain.
For twenty-two years, he always thought that the Lei family's mission was only to protect the Gu family, but he didn't know that this protection would cost their lives.
“Click—”
The sound of the bathroom door lock turning startled him.
He quickly stuffed the letter back into his pocket and grabbed a shirt, pretending to straighten it.
"Still cleaning up so late?"
Renault came out wiping his wet hair, with water droplets rolling down his muscle lines.
The old gunshot wound on his neck was particularly glaring under the light.
"Mr. Xiao's letter fell out."
Lei Shuangcheng pretended to be relaxed and tested, "Did he ask you to take care of Miss Gu?"
"Yeah." Renault's voice was as calm as if he was discussing the weather.
He casually draped the towel over the back of the chair. "Her father entrusted this to her before he died."
One o'clock in the morning.
Lei Shuangcheng stared at the ceiling, feeling as if a huge rock was pressing on his chest.
Thirty-year-old Renault has not had a good night's sleep since the fire when he was eight years old.
I have never felt the excitement of love, nor enjoyed the sweetness of love.
Now even this life is at stake...
The phone screen suddenly lit up.
Lina sent a message: [Opening ceremony the day after tomorrow, can you and Renault come? ]
Lei Shuangcheng replied: [I will definitely be there.]
Looking at the information, Lei Shuangcheng suddenly had an idea.
Hasn’t Lina always liked Renault?
If...if they could have a child, at least they could leave a bloodline for Renault.
Even though Renault was very cold towards Lina, if Lina took the initiative and helped him, then the matter would be settled...
This thought warmed up Lei Shuangcheng's cold heart again.
He turned sideways and looked at the sleeping Renault in the moonlight.
"Boss..." He muttered to himself, "I have to give it a try no matter what."
This life should not disappear quietly like this.
Even if it means going against Renault's wishes, even if it means betraying Gu Youran's trust.
…
7:50 the next morning.
Gu Youran took Shi Heng's arm and walked into the lobby of the Dijing Hotel.
Renault and Lei Shuangcheng were already waiting in front of the floor-to-ceiling window.
The four of them nodded silently and walked towards the parking lot in tacit understanding.
The convoy drove towards "Jing'an Garden" in the northern suburbs of Yuncheng.
It is surrounded by mountains on three sides and faces water on one side, making it a Feng Shui treasure land.
The winter morning mist shrouded the cemetery, and the newly built bluestone path was still covered with dew.
"It's right here."
Renault stopped in front of a blank monument.
The surface of the white marble stele was as smooth as new, without even a single inscription.
