Shi Heng checked his watch and suggested, "It's almost noon now, and I'm not very familiar with this area. I heard there are a lot of special snacks in the old street. Could you please be my guide?"
Su Niannian was about to refuse, but her stomach growled loudly.
Her cheeks flushed slightly and she nodded quickly, "Okay, I'll go tell Dad."
Five minutes later, she took off her white coat and came out.
Shi Heng was waiting for her under the sycamore tree at the entrance of the clinic.
"What do you want to eat?" Su Niannian walked up to him and asked.
"You decide. I'm not familiar with this place at all." Shi Heng lowered his head slightly and looked at her with gentle eyes.
She thought for a moment and said, "Then let's go to Tang Ji Noodle House. Their beef noodles are a 30-year-old craft."
The two of them strolled along the old street paved with bluestone slabs. Shi Heng still walked on the outside as usual, using his body to shield her from the occasional passers-by who brushed past him.
This subconscious protective gesture warmed Su Niannian's heart.
It was lunch time and the noodle shop was bustling with people.
Shi Heng quickly wiped the plastic stool clean with a tissue before letting her sit down.
The proprietress greeted warmly, "Nian Nian is here! Who is this?"
"This is my friend Mr. Shi."
Su Niannian said to the proprietress, "One large bowl and one small bowl of beef noodles, please. I don't want cilantro on mine, and his..."
She suddenly stopped and looked at Shi Heng uncertainly.
"I don't want cilantro either." Shi Heng said, a smile flashing in his eyes.
Su Niannian's heart moved slightly.
He even has the same taste as her?
Soon, the beef noodles were served.
Shi Heng naturally put his fried egg into her bowl and said, "You've used up your energy from the acupuncture this morning, so eat more."
Su Niannian was stunned. "How do you know I like fried eggs?"
Shi Heng's hands trembled slightly, and then he smiled and said, "I guessed. Seeing how thin you are, you must need some nutrition."
While eating noodles, Su Niannian couldn't help but ask the question in her mind, "Are you renovating that shop to open a store?"
"Well, I have a friend who has been a pastry chef for over ten years. He's very skilled, and he's always wanted to return to his hometown in Yuncheng to develop his career. I have some spare money, so I bought the shop and partnered with him to open a dessert shop."
Su Niannian frowned, "But the consumption level of this old street..."
"We're not going for the high-end route," Shi Heng interrupted her. "The prices will be very affordable. And since this place is close to schools and residential areas, it should be good for delivery orders."
Seeing that Su Niannian was still worried, Shi Heng suddenly reached out and gently wiped away the soup from the corner of her mouth.
This sudden action made both of them stunned at the same time.
"S-Sorry."
Shi Heng quickly withdrew his hand, his ears turning red.
Su Niannian's heartbeat suddenly quickened. She lowered her head and stirred the noodles to hide her panic. "Will the cost of such a high-end decoration be too high?"
"The initial investment is a bit large, but a good environment can attract more customers. I need a quiet environment for writing, and living in the backyard is perfect. I can also wander around the old street to find inspiration."
He raised his eyes and looked at Su Niannian with a burning gaze, "We will be neighbors from now on."
Su Niannian felt her cheeks getting hot and quickly drank some noodle soup to cover it up.
She drank too quickly and accidentally choked.
Shi Heng immediately handed her a tissue and patted her back gently.
The warmth of his palm came through the thin fabric, making Su Niannian's heart beat even faster.
After finishing the noodles, Shi Heng took the initiative to pay.
As we walked out of the noodle shop, he suggested, "Can you walk around with me some more? I'm completely unfamiliar with this area."
Su Niannian glanced at her phone and said, "I don't have a patient until four in the afternoon. I can show you around."
They walked slowly along the old street, passed by the roasted nuts shop with the aroma of sugar-roasted chestnuts, and walked around the old man squatting on the roadside selling straw katydid cages.
Shi Heng always walked on the sunny side just right to block the glaring light leaking through the gaps in the eaves for her.
He stopped suddenly when passing a stationery store.
"What's wrong?" Su Niannian asked.
Shi Heng pointed to a light blue notebook in the window and said, "This one suits you very well."
"Why?"
"This notebook has thick paper, plenty of pages, and easy-to-categorize dividers. A doctor friend of mine uses this and says it's perfect for recording medical records."
Su Niannian took a closer look in surprise, "Really? I've been looking for a suitable one recently..."
Before she could finish, Shi Heng had already walked into the store.
When he came out, he held the notebook in his hand and handed it to Su Niannian solemnly, "I give it to you as a thank you gift for accompanying me to visit the old street."
He pointed at the notebook and asked, "Open it and take a look?"
Su Niannian opened the title page and found the words written in beautiful penmanship:
[To the best doctor Xiao Su——Shi Heng]
The tips of her ears turned red.
My palm was pressed against the cold notebook cover, but I couldn't suppress the little flame that was rising in my heart.
How could he even guess what she needed?
Shi Heng looked at her red earlobes, took a half step back calmly, and restrained the urge to brush away the loose hair on her forehead.
No, that's too fast.
The way she looked at him now was still too unfamiliar.
Behind this unfamiliar face is the wife he has been thinking about day and night.
But now, he could only approach cautiously, like a young boy who was attracted by someone for the first time.
The two continued to stroll along the old street.
Suddenly I saw a white-haired old lady sitting on a small stool on the side of the road, cutting paper.
The red paper fluttered in her hands and soon turned into a lifelike butterfly.
"So amazing..." Su Niannian couldn't help but stop and watch.
Shi Heng's eyes fell on a paper-cut work hanging next to the old lady.
