Su Niannian raised her head and met Shi Heng's serious gaze.
Those eyes that always smiled were now filled with affection and fragility that she had never seen before.
"My parents... have agreed to our relationship." She whispered, her fingers unconsciously twisting the corner of her clothes.
Shi Heng gently held her restless hand and said, "I'm not asking about your parents."
He held her face in his hands and gently brushed the corner of her lips with his thumb. "I'm asking you, Su Niannian, are you willing to be my girlfriend?"
Su Niannian felt her heart beating so fast as if it was about to jump out of her chest, and her cheeks were hot.
She lowered her eyes, her eyelashes trembling slightly, "I..."
"I'll be good to you."
Shi Heng interrupted her hesitation, his voice incredibly gentle.
"I'm good to Su Qian and Su Mo, better than you can imagine. I make breakfast for you every day, take the kids to the amusement park on weekends, and hold an umbrella for you on rainy days..."
“Puff—”
Su Niannian couldn't help laughing and looked up at him, "Have you even thought about holding an umbrella for rainy days?"
"Of course," Shi Heng also smiled, "I've even thought about who will get up first to cook porridge when we're old."
Su Niannian looked at his serious expression and suddenly realized that her answer had been on the verge of coming out.
"Okay." She said softly, her voice almost inaudible.
But Shi Heng heard it.
His eyes lit up instantly, like stars suddenly lit up in the night sky.
He hugged her in his arms, his voice trembling with excitement, "Say it again, I want to hear it clearly."
"I say yes! I'm willing to be your girlfriend."
Su Niannian spoke louder this time, pressing her cheek against his chest, listening to his equally rapid heartbeat.
Shi Heng lowered his head and kissed her. The kiss was a little eager at first, but became gentle and lingering after touching her soft lips.
Su Niannian closed her eyes, wrapped her arms around his neck, and responded awkwardly.
When they finally broke apart, both of them were breathing raggedly.
Shi Heng rested his forehead against hers and asked softly, "Are you hungry? Do you want to go get a midnight snack?"
Su Niannian shook her head. "I'm not hungry. I just want to stay with you like this."
Shi Heng suddenly thought of something and his voice became cautious.
"I heard from my aunt that you had a difficult delivery when you gave birth to your two children? What happened then?"
Su Niannian bit her lower lip and said, "I had severe postpartum hemorrhage... I was in a coma for two days."
Feeling Shi Heng's hand tremble violently, she quickly added, "Fortunately, Dad is a Chinese medicine doctor, and he used some special methods in time..."
"Massive bleeding? Coma for two days?"
Shi Heng's voice suddenly became hoarse, his breathing suddenly became disordered, and his chest rose and fell significantly faster.
His face turned pale, his jawline was tense, and his knuckles turned blue from the force.
He pulled her into a hug, his arms tightening so tightly that she could hardly breathe.
His fingers pressed against her back, trembling slightly uncontrollably, as if he was trying hard to hold something steady. "I'm sorry..."
Su Niannian felt a wet heat on her neck and her heart was shocked.
He is crying.
"Heng..." She patted his back gently, "This is not your fault."
Shi Heng raised his head, his eyes were red and his eyelashes were still wet.
His Adam's apple rolled twice before he managed to squeeze out a sound, "Did it hurt? Was it... very painful at that time?"
When he raised his hand to touch her face, the trembling in his fingertips had not yet faded.
Su Niannian's nose felt sore, "It hurts... It hurts so much, I thought I was going to die..."
Shi Heng hugged her again, his voice choked with sobs, "I won't do that again, I swear."
This sentence was like a key, opening a locked corner in Su Niannian's heart.
After Shi Heng calmed down a little, he said softly, "Show me the pictures of the children."
Su Niannian immediately took out her phone, "This is when they were just born..."
Shi Heng looked at the two babies in the photo and his eyes softened.
His fingertips gently brushed across the wrinkled little face on the screen, and he whispered, "So small..."
"This is the first time Su Qian smiled," Su Niannian flipped through the photo album, "This is the first time Su Mo rolled over and got stuck in the railing..."
Shi Heng couldn't help but laugh, and tapped the "little ball of flesh stuck in the railing" on the screen with his fingertips.
"Has this kid been so reckless since he was young?"
"you do not say!"
Su Niannian flipped through the photos of her first birthday again, "Su Qian secretly ate the cake and got it all over her face..."
Shi Heng's gaze fell on the little face covered in cream in the photo.
The tip of her finger gently rubbed the sweet white on the screen, and her voice became softer, "Like you, with your eyes curved when you smile."
They just snuggled together and looked through the photos one by one.
Shi Heng sometimes laughed at Su Qian's mischievous expression, and sometimes was moved by Su Mo's stubborn look.
When he saw the photos of the children going to kindergarten for the first time, he suddenly whispered, "Let me go to the next parent-teacher conference."
These few simple words are filled with the desire to make amends.
Shi Heng carefully imported the photos one by one into his mobile phone.
He stared down at the newly added photo collection in his phone's album and solemnly named the folder "Our Baby".
"In the future, my phone will be filled with their growth stories."
He spoke softly, his thumb gently stroking the smiling faces of the children on the screen.
Su Niannian looked at his focused profile and found that he was even pious when saving the photo.
It’s like making up for the time I missed over the years, bit by bit.
Before I knew it, time passed by little by little.
Shi Heng looked out the window and said, "It's almost dawn, you should go back."
